Aaron Judge has been cleared to begin light workout activity, and the New York Yankees captain said he will return this season from the rib injury that’s sidelined him since May 31. The three-time AL MVP was on the field at Yankee Stadium in baseball gear Wednesday afternoon, stretching, jogging and doing shuffle slides with a resistance band. He was given the green light to take a step forward in his recovery progression after undergoing his latest scan Tuesday. Still, it will be a while before Judge is back in the lineup. He must first advance to taking swings, and neither he nor Yankees manager Aaron Boone offered a target date for the slugger’s return.

Pete Crow-Armstrong has added to his NL MVP campaign right in front of Shohei Ohtani. Crow-Armstrong slugged two more homers for the Chicago Cubs in their series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, including a laser off the videoboard in right field. He also hit an RBI double to right in the second inning. Of course, Ohtani started the game with his 25th homer. The Japanese slugger also hit a leadoff single in the fifth. Ohtani won his second straight NL MVP award in 2025, smacking 55 homers and recording a 2.87 ERA in 14 starts on the mound for the Dodgers.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are cutting ties with veteran designated hitter Marcell Ozuna as they gear up for a playoff push. A person with knowledge of the decision told the Associated Press that the club is releasing the 35-year-old following a nightmarish stretch in which the three-time All-Star could never seem to get on track. The Pirates, who are chasing their first playoff spot in over a decade, are planning to promote outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Ozuna's roster spot.

One thing I’ve always liked about deadline day is the peak into how major league organizations actually value players. I know there’s money and budget and job security issues that illustrate the evaluations, but it’s still a money-where-your-mouth-is moment on the calendar. Some guys (AJ Preller) thrive in this environment. Some don’t.  Atlanta asked about Jacob deGrom and seemed to give up when he chose to remain in Texas. Some of their fans were big mad on the internet, calling for the head of Alex Anthopoulos. They did get Lane Thomas and Bailey Falter from Kansas City and Tyler Mahle from San Francisco. Also Brent Suter for the bullpen. Their fans seemed angry online and are right to suspect AA is looking forward to the post-deadline scrap heap. Jorge Soler is out there now, for what it’s Werth.

The New York Mets are paying more than $8.1 million to the Pirates in a trade that sent pitcher Luke Weaver to Pittsburgh. That covers most of the $13.4 million left on Weaver's contract. Pittsburgh will pay Weaver a small portion of his salary. In other deals, the Chicago Cubs are paying nearly $5 million to Toronto in the transaction that sent pitcher Jameson Taillon to the Blue Jays.
