Garrett Crochet (P - CHW)
11/5/24 6:49 PM -
Could the Red Sox consummate a blockbuster trade for a starting pitcher this offseason?. White Sox lefthander Garrett Crochet tops the list. The 25-year-old, in his first year as a big league starter, had a 3.58 ERA as well as a stellar 2.69 FIP, posted the highest strikeout rate (35 percent) in the big leagues, and looked like an ace. For the rebuilding White Sox, who dealt starter Dylan Cease with two years of remaining control last March for four prospects (headlined by pitcher Drew Thorpe), a Crochet trade is realistic. “When you talk about potential trades, Garrett certainly garners a lot of attention,” said White Sox GM Chris Getz.

Will Red Sox spend money, pursue top free agents? 'We're going to engage'. The million dollar question this offseason remains whether the Red Sox will spend big money and compete for the top free agents. Team chairman Tom Werner said at the beginning of last offseason that the Red Sox planned to go full throttle to improve the roster. Boston gave out only $52.25 million in guaranteed money in free agency It went to Lucas Giolito ($38.5M), Liam Hendriks ($10M), Joely Rodriguez ($1.5M), Chase Anderson ($1.25M) and Cooper Criswell ($1M).

Josh Hader (P - HOU)
11/5/24 4:00 PM -
Red Sox Predicted To Land Superstar Free-Agent Closer On $56 Million Contract. The Boston Red Sox bullpen obviously must improve this winter, but should that mean they spend big on a free-agent closer? Closers have been a market inefficiency for the past couple of Major League Baseball offseasons. Edwin Díaz of the New York Mets and Josh Hader of the Houston Astros signed massive contracts that could hamper their organizations in the next few seasons, especially if they continue on their respective downward trajectories. With that being said, the Red Sox don't have a clear-cut closer for the 2025 season, as veteran Kenley Jansen is likely to depart in free agency.

11/5/24 2:00 PM -
Washington Nationals Will Have To Open Up Checkbook To Land This Free Agent. The Washington Nationals are a team that many people are expecting to be aggressive in free agency this offseason. It will be interesting to see how they look to address those needs, as several free agents and trade targets could emerge. If they look to sign someone, Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros is the no-brainer top option. With Matt Chapman signing an extension with the San Francisco Giants during the season and Eugenio Suarez's option being picked up, it is slim pickings in free agency.

Houston Astros Shockingly Release Their Past World Series Champion. It was known that some tough decisions were going to have to be made by the Houston Astros' front office this offseason, and the first one has come in. According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, they have outrighted starting pitcher Jose Urquidy off their 40-man roster which made him a free agent after he cleared waivers. The 2022 World Series champion has been with the organization since 2015 when he was signed as an international free agent. Urquidy had four outings and one start, giving up just one earned run across his 10 innings pitched, including when he became the first Mexican-born pitcher to win a World Series game since Fernando Valenzuela.

Anderson of CBS Sports made a list of the top 50 free agents and their best potential fits. The Royals were listed as a potential landing spot for slugger Anthony Santander. "In addition to being living proof that there are still quality players to be unearthed in the Rule 5 draft, Santander became the first switch-hitter to homer 40 or more times in a season since Carlos Beltran and Lance Berkman both did it in 2006," Anderson wrote.

Angels Looking to Replace Anthony Rendon at Third Base: Report. Will Anthony Rendon remain the Los Angeles Angels' third baseman by the time the 2025 MLB season begins? Rendon's 2024 season was once again marked by underwhelming play and injuries, which has plagued him since he arrived in California in late 2019. Once the National League's RBI leader, an MLB All-Star, and World Series champion, Rendon has yet to live up to billing of when he signed with the Angels on a seven-year, $245 million contract. Red Sox need to replace 31 homers in middle of lineup? And add more?. The Red Sox did not extend right-handed slugger Tyler O'Neill a qualifying offer but there's still a chance that they re-sign him in free agency. There is mutual interest between O'Neill and Boston. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said earlier this offseason, “Whether it's Tyler or someone else, replacing that type of production in the middle of the lineup is going to be a priority.” On Monday, Breslow again reiterated the importance of replacing that right-handed production and becoming better against left-handed pitching.

Does A Carlos Santana, Cleveland Guardians Reunion Make Sense?. This can't be a winter where the Cleveland Guardians watch all of the action from the sidelines. One spot the Guardians may need some reinforcement in next season is at first base. A potential free agent option is Carlos Santana, who is a familiar face for the Cleveland organization. Santana may now be 38, but he's still playing at a high level both on offense and defense.

Cal Raleigh (C - SEA)
11/5/24 12:23 PM -
Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh provides update on his injury status. MLB catchers get quite beat up throughout a season, and that's especially going to be the case if you lead the league in innings caught like the Seattle Mariners' Cal Raleigh did in 2024. “I'm all good,” Raleigh said about his health status. Last offseason, Raleigh underwent surgery to repair an injury to his left thumb, which is his catching hand, an issue that clearly bothered him down the stretch during the 2023 campaign. A change that Raleigh made in 2024 may be a factor in keeping that thumb healthy.

11/5/24 11:32 AM -
Former Dodgers Infielder Joins Angels as Offseason Gets Underway. The Los Angeles Angels announced that they have claimed former Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Ryan Noda off waivers from the Oakland Athletics. Noda, 28, was selected as a Rule 5 pick from the Dodgers organization in 2022 and spent the entire 2023 season with the Athletics. Initially, this choice appeared to be a smart move, as Noda quickly established himself as a reliable on-base threat. During his time with the A's, he posted a slash line of .229/.364/.406, demonstrating his ability to get on base by walking in an impressive 15.6 percent of his plate appearances.

Boston drew some criticism this week, as it extended the qualifying offer to starting pitcher Nick Pivetta — which would pay him north of $21 million for the upcoming season. The Red Sox aren't just throwing money around trying to run it back, however. “Nick Pivetta's market, from what I've been told over the last couple of days, is, 'surprisingly strong,'” MLB Network's Jon Morosi said on “Hot Stove” on Tuesday.

After the break, his ERA was 5.70 in 23 2/3 innings, and he was sent to Triple-A in mid-September despite a dearth of bullpen options with the Twins in the thick of the playoff race.

Houston Astros Acquire Former First Round Pick From New York Yankees. Things could go in two directions for the Houston Astros this offseason, and they won't know exactly what their next steps are going to be until Alex Bregman makes his decision regarding his free agency. According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Astros acquired outfielder Taylor Trammell from the New York Yankees. Houston is expected to have five outfielders in the mix next year with Kyle Tucker, Jake Meyers, Chas McCormick, Mauricio Dubon and Yordan Alvarez, but there is also a chance the front office could look to break up this logjam at some point this winter to bring in other players at areas of need.

Orioles tabbed to replace Corbin Burnes with $60 million hurler. The Baltimore Orioles made a big move last offseason in trading for Milwaukee Brewers All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes to be the team's staff ace. It was hoped that Burnes could be the one to get the resurgent Orioles over the postseason hump. While the 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner put up a solid season, it was not quite up to the heights that Burnes achieved in Milwaukee, and Baltimore once found itself ousted from the American League playoffs in the opening round.

With the New York Yankees deciding not to bring back Anthony Rizzo this past weekend, there has been much speculation as to whether the Chicago Cubs could bring back their longtime face of the franchise. The Cubs are well set at first base after Michael Busch's promising rookie season, and with the emergence of Pete Crow-Armstrong in the outfield, Chicago is also good to go at designated hitter with the recently re-upped Cody Bellinger moving to right field and slugger Seiya Suzuki now expected to take the lion's share of time at DH.

Yanks ace Gerrit Cole gives up right to opt out, stays with New York rather than become free agent. Gerrit Cole gave up his opt-out right and will remain with the New York Yankees under a contract that runs through 2028 rather than become a free agent. New York’s ace initially exercised his right to terminate the $324 million, nine-year contract, which has $144 million and four years remaining. That decision triggered a two-day window for the Yankees to add a $36 million salary for 2029, which would void the opt out. Given the short time frame after the team's World Series-ending loss Wednesday night, both sides extended the bargaining period until 5 p.m. EST Monday, the deadline for option decisions in the collective bargaining agreement.
