3/16/25 9:59 PM - Austin Wells likely to hit leadoff for Yankees on Opening Day in unexpected move. Kyle Freeland (P - COL)
3/16/25 7:01 PM - Rockies Recap: Kyle Freeland, named opening day starter, charged with seven runs. Royals 10, Rockies 2 Sunday at Salt River Fields On the mound: Kyle Freeland, after officially being named the Opening Day starter, posted a poor line, but he didn't pitch that badly. Spotty defense and some mental miscues hurt the lefty. The Royals tagged him for seven earned runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. Freeland walked two, hit a batter and struck out five. The good news is that he threw 76 pitches, 52 for strikes. … Right-hander Jake Bird, a possible long reliever, pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. Bird has a 3.27 ERA. … Closer candidate Seth Halvorsen pitched a scoreless ninth, walking one. At the plate: Sean Bouchard played outfield and first base and hit his

Left-hander Jesus Luzardo struck out six in four innings and Edmundo Sosa drove in three runs as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies hammered a Baltimore Orioles split squad 12-1 on Sunday in Sarasota, Fla. Alan Trejo (2B - TEX)
3/16/25 6:43 PM - 3 Texas Rangers observations: Adolis García keeps cooking, Alejandro Osuna impresses again. The Rangers came up just short on Sunday in their bid to have at least one win on every day they played for the week, leaving the winning run on base in a 7-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The Rangers entered the ninth down by five runs, but drew to within one on a wild pitch before non-roster infielder Alan Trejo popped up to end the game. The Rangers, who were off Monday, went 5-1 over the previous five days, the only loss coming in the second half of a set of split squad games on Friday. Here are a few observations from the game that have nothing to do with Jack Leiter.

Vaughn Grissom (2B - BOS)
3/16/25 6:34 PM - Alex Cora Hints At Favorite To Win Red Sox Starting Infield Job. The Boston Red Sox only have a few position battles taking place across the diamond during spring training. Perhaps it is the starting second base job still up for grabs. It was thought to be a two-player race between Vaughn Grissom and prized prospect Kristian Campbell when camp opened up. In fact, it looks like David Hamilton is the favorite to take up second base when the Red Sox open their season March 27 against the Texas Rangers.

Cody Bradford (P - TEX)
3/16/25 6:02 PM - Jack Leiter, Kumar Rocker should be fix for Texas Rangers' pitching jam, but aren't yet. The solution to the Rangers' pitching jam should be easy and obvious. While Cody Bradford and Jon Gray are out, however long that may be, the answer should be to plug in Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker into the starting rotation. With a week left in Arizona, the Rangers have been positively effusive about Patrick Murphy, who spent last season as a reliever in Japan, and Adrian Houser, whose ERA over the last three seasons (4.76) is one of the 20 highest in baseball among the 140 with at least 250 innings in that span.

Birdsong turned in his best outing of the spring on Sunday against the A's at Scottsdale Stadium, tossing five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no walks on 60 pitches. 3/16/25 3:28 PM - Rash of injuries forces Rangers to test rotation depth early. Last season, the Texas Rangers gambled on a pitching staff with a history of injuries and backed it up with a lack of depth before rolling snake eyes. From Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle starting off the season compromised as they recovered from Tommy John surgery to Cody Bradford suffering an unforeseen injury that took him out for much of the summer, to Max Scherzer, Nathan Eovaldi, and Jon Gray each hitting the shelf multiple times, the Rangers hoped for health and instead rang up mileage on the Round Rock to Arlington shuttle on their way to a disappointing third-place finish in the American League West.

3/16/25 3:00 PM - Unorthodox Red Sox Trade Idea Dumps Wilyer Abreu To Brewers In 3-Player Swap. Not many teams would consider trading a player like Wilyer Abreu. At some point in the near future, the Boston Red Sox may feel like they have no other choice. Abreu was excellent as a rookie in 2024--a very good, but not quite elite major league starting outfielder. The Red Sox's outfield picture, however, is quickly getting crowded.

After weeks of closely monitored and regulated sessions of flat-ground work that progressed to sessions off a bullpen mound and eventually to throwing off a field mound to hitters who were to watch only, Brash was able compete. “No governor today,” said pitching coach Pete Woodworth shortly after.

Against Colorado Rockies minor leaguers, Roupp was so dominant that getting on base wasn't even a reasonable goal. Simply making contact against Roupp was difficult enough. The 26-year-old pitched in a High-A game to get his pitch count up while Jordan Hicks faced the Milwaukee Brewers a few miles away, and in five one-hit innings, Roupp struck out 13.

Elly De La Cruz (SS - CIN)
3/16/25 12:01 AM - Prospect News: Bold Predictions For 2025. I’m not sure what qualifies as bold anymore, but I know I want to write things that help readers find value in their leagues. Here’s a link to my bold predictions from last year in which I say Elly De La Cruz will have a 30/50 season. It’s easy enough to say this now, but at that time, much of the fantasy world was in doubt, including Razzball’s fearless leader, as he mentions in his recent Draft Champions Draft Recap: I Choo-Choo Cruz You. I have to lean into the Elly call because a lot of those predictions were not good. I thought Anthony Rendon would watch “The Fan” and start hitting somehow, for instance. Gonna try and do a little better this year.
