Haniger hits grand slam in Mariners' 6-1 win. Diamondbacks ace Gallen leaves with hamstring injury. Mitch Haniger hit a grand slam in the sixth inning, two batters after Arizona ace Zac Gallen left because of tightness in his right hamstring, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Diamondbacks 6-1 on Friday night. Gallen (3-2) walked Josh Rojas to lead off the sixth, then was pulled in the middle of Julio Rodríguez’s subsequent at-bat. Rodríguez went on to single off Scott McGough, and Cal Raleigh walked to load the bases for Haniger, who hammered a 389-foot shot to left-center. Josh Rojas and Mitch Garver also homered for Seattle, and Emerson Hancock (3-2) threw six strong innings. Arizona’s Kevin Newman homered in the sixth, one of two hits allowed by Hancock.

Brent Rooker hits a go-ahead double in the 10th to carry the Athletics past the Orioles 3-2. Brent Rooker doubled in the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning to cap a late comeback that carried the Oakland Athletics past the Baltimore Orioles 3-2. After Oakland rallied from a 2-1 deficit to pull even in the ninth against Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel, Rooker put the A’s in front with a two-out liner into the left-field corner off Jacob Webb. Mitch Spence worked the ninth and Mason Miller got three outs for his seventh save. Miller stuck out Gunnar Henderson on a 101.8 mph fastball with a runner on third to end it. Shea Langeliers homered in the first and scored in the 10th for the A's.

Joey Ortiz hit a run-scoring single in the 11th inning and finished with a homer and four RBIs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-6 win over the New York Yankees on Friday night. Owen Miller, inserted as a pinch runner for former Yankee Gary Sánchez at second to start the 11th inning, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Brice Turang. Ortiz then singled through the legs of third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, driving in the winning run. Jared Koenig (2-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief. Michael Tonkin (1-3) took the loss. Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo and Trent Grisham homer for the Yankees.

Patrick Bailey hits walk-off home run, Giants beat Pirates 3-0. Patrick Bailey hit a walk-off three-run homer and the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Friday. The game was scoreless until the ninth, when Michael Conforto walked and Matt Chapman singled to begin the inning off Pirates reliever David Bednar. Bailey then drilled a homer to right field. Both starters, San Francisco’s Kyle Harrison, and Pittsburgh’s Quinn Priester, each pitched six innings. Harrison struck out seven and gave up five hits.

Ober stays hot, Santana homers to help Twins beat Angels 5-3 for 5th straight win. Bailey Ober took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Carlos Santana homered and the Minnesota Twins extended their winning streak to five games, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 on Friday night. Santana drove in two runs, while Byron Buxton, Ryan Jeffers and Willi Castro each had an RBI to help the Twins won the opener of a three-game series and a six-game trip. Ober (2-1) was charged with two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts, Left-hander Caleb Thielbar got the final out for his first save of the season and the second of his career. Alec Burleson hit his first homer in almost nine months, a three-run blast that powered the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-2 win over the New York Mets. Burleson’s second-inning round-tripper was his first since he homered against the Minnesota Twins last Aug. 3. J.D. Martinez went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in his Mets debut. Chris Sale sailing along for first-place Braves, hoping for injury-free season. Chris Sale was hesitant to discuss how good he's feeling after another strong start for the Atlanta Braves. It's understandable that Sale wouldn't want to jinx himself after all the injuries he endured with the Boston Red Sox. Once one of the game's most dominant pitchers, the guy with the funky motion and nasty stuff, Sale managed just 31 starts over the past four seasons, spending far more time in the training room than he did on the mound.

Friday night they discovered that Atlanta plays that game as well. Cleveland, in the opening game of a series between the teams with the best records in the big leagues, made one too many mistakes in a 6-2 loss to the Braves at Truist Park. Since Merryweather went down in early April, former closer Adbert Alzolay has struggled mightily in the ninth inning, having already surpassed his blown save mark from last year (3) in the first month of 2024. If the bullpen takes another hit via injury or poor performance, perhaps Nissaki can eventually slide in and try to prove himself in MLB again.

At Triple-A Sacramento, Mason Black is off to a sizzling start. The 24-year-old right-hander was one of the final cuts in spring training, and in four starts to begin the season in the minor leagues has allowed a run in only one of them. Pittsburgh was looking for a series win and held a 5-4 lead in the eighth inning on Thursday before veteran reliever Aroldis Chapman served up a two-run homer to former teammate Gary Sanchez. The good news for the Pirates was the continued strong play of catcher Joey Bart, who never lived up to his billing after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick by the Giants in the 2018 draft. Bart bounced from minors to majors for four consecutive seasons, hitting .219 as a Giant in 162 games, before getting dealt to the Pirates earlier this month for minor-leaguer Austin Strickland.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper displayed his "dad strength" in his first game back from the paternity list Thursday in Cincinnati. The San Diego Padres hope Manny Machado follows suit when they welcome Harper and the Phillies to town on Friday night for the opener of a three-game series. Machado will rejoin the team after missing a four-game set in Colorado to become a first-time father on Tuesday morning. Machado could have played in Thursday's 10-9 loss to the Rockies since the maximum time on the paternity list is three games, but Padres manager Mike Shildt decided to wait to use him until the team returned home.

One Cleveland hitter will miss facing the BoSox the most: Guardians breakfast. The Red Sox got out of town Thursday after dropping two of three to the Guardians and five of seven overall as the two clubs wrapped up their season series, but one Cleveland hitter is probably the most sad to see the BoSox go. In 11 career games against Boston, Will Brennan is hitting .324 with nine extra-base hits including four home runs, eight RBI and a 1.143 OPS. Two of Brennan's five career multi-extra base hit games have come against the team he grew up cheering for as a youngster in Stillwell, Kansas. Brennan had another strong game Thursday with a solo home run and a double in his first two at-bats.

Has Red Sox Connor Wong become one of the most underrated catchers in MLB?. The Boston Red Sox's catchers have made a scene at the plate this season. Manager Alex Cora has shown a habit of using hot bats when constructing lineups. First, Reese McGuire was on fire. The catcher earned appearances in the majority of Boston's first four series of the season and he's up to two homers and 10 RBI on the season — McGuire only hit one homer and 12 RBI in all of 2023. Five things we learned from the Orioles' week, including Gunnar Henderson's MVP potential. The Orioles keep winning series, even when their bullpen makes games a little too interesting or their top starters go without their top stuff. This was going to be a week to write about Orioles other than Henderson, but he made that impossible with his all-points masterpiece in the series finale against the Angels. One of the pleasures of last season was the dawning recognition that Henderson has something extra. Yes, he won American League Rookie of the Year honors, but it was more than that.
