José Ramírez hits grand slam, AL-leading Guardians beat Red Sox 6-4. José Ramírez belted his sixth career grand slam and had three hits, Will Brennan had a solo homer and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Boston Red Sox 6-4. Cleveland has the best record in the American League at 18-7 and matched the second-best mark in franchise history through 25 games on Thursday. Rafael Devers had three hits and Rob Refsnyder tripled in a run for the Red Sox. Jarren Duran had an RBI single in the sixth for Boston. Ramírez’s slam off Chase Anderson came one pitch after he appeared to strike out to end the second, but Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire couldn’t hold onto the foul tip.

France and Urías hit 2-run HRs as Mariners beat Texas 4-3 to take series and top spot in AL West. Ty France and Luis Urías hit two-run homers, Luis Castillo pitched six solid innings and Seattle beat the Texas Rangers 4-3. The 13-12 Mariners took two of three in the series and leave with first place in the AL West. Texas starter Andrew Heaney struck out seven in his six innings, but allowed both two-run homers. Castillo struck out six and walked two. Andrés Muñoz, the third Seattle reliever, worked a perfect ninth for his third save. Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Smith hit solo homers for reigning World Series champion Texas, which is 13-13.

Gary Sánchez hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and a series split. Sánchez drove an 0-2 sinker at 101.9 mph from Aroldis Chapman to right with two outs, putting the Brewers ahead 6-5 on Thursday. Two of his three home runs came this series, including on Tuesday when he produced Milwaukee’s lone run in a 2-1 loss. The Brewers have won six of eight after taking the final two of the four-game series. The Pirates have lost eight of 10 after an 11-5 start.

Jose Ramirez hit a second-inning grand slam and added an important insurance run in the seventh as the Cleveland Guardians beat the visiting Boston Red Sox 6-4 on Thursday. On the 10th pitch of his at-bat against Boston starter Chase Anderson (0-1) with the bags packed, Ramirez sent a no-doubt drive into the right-field seats for his second homer of the series. White Sox complete 0-7 road trip with loss to Twins, fall to 3-22. With the Twins' 6-3 come-from-behind victory Thursday afternoon, the Sox completed a seven-game road trip, dropping their franchise record worst record to start a season to 3-22. The four-game sweep sent the Sox home with an 0-7 trip through Philadelphia and Minnesota and a 1-13 record on the road, also a franchise record. The Sox led 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Kevin Pillar and RBI single by Paul DeJong, but the Twins answered with five solo home runs, two against starter Michael Soroka (five-plus innings, two runs), one against John Brebbia, and two in the ninth against Steven Wilson.

Chicago Cubs reliever Luke Little says he had to change his glove before he entered the team's 4-3 victory over Houston because of an American flag patch. Manager Craig Counsell went to insert Little with one out in the seventh inning. But as the 6-foot-8 left-hander went through the usual check by umpires for pitchers coming into the game, he was told he had to swap out his glove. Counsell says the issue was the white in the American flag patch on Little's glove. Little says he has been using the same glove since Class A ball.

Just when it seemed like former Toronto Blue Jays ace Alek Manoah was getting back on track, he took another major step backwards yesterday. In his second start of the season for Triple-A Buffalo last week, Manoah impressed, allowing just two runs through 5.2 innings. It was a much-needed bounce back after allowing four runs and eight hits in 3.1 innings his first time out with Buffalo this season. There had been chatter recently that Manoah may soon return to the Blue Jays rotation, and a big performance yesterday may have been enough to earn him that opportunity.

“When (Colorado starter) Ty (Blach) is on, he’s hitting his spots,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “The first inning, he didn’t. Then the baseball got him with the blooper. Really good pitch to Kim and then it’s just the little dorker right down the right field line. That’s baseball.”
Waldron (1-2) rebounded from his worst outing of the season, a loss against Toronto in which he allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. With four runs on the board before he took the mound for the first time, Waldron got some much-needed run support after San Diego scored just seven runs in his previous four starts.

The young slugger has been diagnosed with a fractured rib after he was pulled from Boston's April 20 game against the Pirates. Curtis Mead hit his first homer of the season and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 7-5 to avoid a three-game sweep. Ben Rortvedt collected his second RBI of the game with a single and scored on Mead’s two-run drive off Will Vest that put the Rays ahead in the sixth. It was Mead’s first homer since Sept. 22. Tampa Bay had lost three in row and five of seven. Chris Devenski got the win in relief and Garrett Cleavinger worked the ninth to get his second save in as many chances.

Adolis García and Evan Carter hit Texas’ first back-to-back home runs this season in the fourth inning and the Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-1. Jonathan Hernández got the win in his first appearance of the season. He retired four of the five batters he faced. Hernández was sidelined with a lat strain until being activated from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. Mariners starter Bryce Miller gave up the two homers and four hits in four-plus innings to fall to 3-2. The Mariners left nine runners on base and were 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

DENVER (AP) — Xander Bogaerts had a season-high three hits, Matt Waldron gave up one run in six innings and the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Wednesday night.
“Getting ahead was the name of my game today,” Waldron said. “(Catcher Kyle Higashioka) and I executed well and the offense did what they do. It’s awesome. It was a fun win. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling.”
Ha-Seong Kim and Jackson Merrill had two RBIs to help the Padres beat the Rockies for the 11th time in their past 14 meetings. Kim had two hits, including a bloop double to right field that drove in the game’s first two runs and spurred a four-run first inning.
“When (Colorado starter) Ty (Blach) is on, he’s hitting his spots,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “The first inning, he didn’t. Then the baseball got him with the blooper. Really good pitch to Kim and then it’s just the little dorker right down the right field line. That’s baseball.”
Waldron (1-2) rebounded from his worst outing of the season, a loss against Toronto in which he allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. With four runs on the board before he took the mound for the first time, Waldron got some much-needed run support after San Diego scored just seven runs in his previous four starts.
“Credit goes to Waldron,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “He was very, very good. All pitches working. He mixed it in masterfully and had command of it. It was really filthy.”
Robert Suarez picked up his ninth save of the season, retiring the Rockies in order on seven pitches.
The multi-hit outing was the second in the past four games for Bogaerts, who entered Wednesday night batting just .198.

Orioles OF Heston Kjerstad was recalled after laying waste to Triple-A for a few weeks. He started in right field on Tuesday and should be in the lineup most nights from here forward. Baltimore continues to be perplexing in their efforts to fold these talent waves into the roster build, so there’s always a chance Kjerstad goes cold and winds up back in the minors, but I’m betting against that at this point, which is exactly what I would’ve said in spring training, so yeah . . . very helpful stuff from me. The Atlanta Braves lefty is in that conversation though and he brushed aside a poor start to the 2024 season with a brilliant pitching display on Tuesday night in Atlanta. Fried threw a complete game shutout with just 92 pitches, his third career “Maddux” at the MLB level. “I guess that's kind of my thing,” Fried said, per Mark Bowman. We've seen that of late with the Athletics, who have dropped six of the past eight games and scored just two runs in one of their wins.They'll need to pick it up offensively in a big way if they're going to hang around with the Yankees. That's easier said than done when going up against Clarke Schmidt.Schmidt doesn't generally pitch deep into games, but it's tough to score against him when he's on the mound. He's allowed two runs or fewer in three of four starts this season, with a three-run showing against an Astros team sitting sixth in xwOBA serving as the lone exception.Schmidt should be able to minimize the damage this struggling Athletics attack can dole out.That means Joe Boyle needs to shine against the Yankees, and I don't see that happening. Can the Orioles streak of journeyman gems continue with Albert Suárez?. The Orioles' collection of young talent has been the main reason for the clubs turn around the past couple of seasons. While the farm system has gained recognition, each season general manager Mike Elias seems to find a journeyman veteran, that seemingly comes out of nowhere to contribute to the team's success. In 2023 it was veteran pitchers Cionel Pérez and Jorge López, then it was Yennier Cano and Danny Coulombe last season, who all had career best years that were far from expected. This year the Orioles may have found another journeyman gem in starting pitcher Albert Suárez, who is 2-0 without giving up a run in his first two starts with the team.

The East Carteret baseball team was dominated Tuesday by the top 1A/2A Coastal Plains Conference squad Northside-Pinetown. The Panthers ripped off 11 runs on 12 hits to take an 11-2 win and capture their ninth win in their last 10 games. Blake Treinen and Jason Heyward were among the first members of the Los Angeles Dodgers to be bitten by the injury bug this season. Ibáñez, on the injured list since April 8 with a left hamstring strain, should be in the lineup for the Mud Hens on Thursday. Assuming no setbacks, it wouldn't be a surprise if Ibáñez is ready to rejoin the Tigers by the end of the month. Waiting for Paul. This is Jared Jones. Jones currently has 39 strikeouts, which is the second most in all of baseball. It might also be one of the highest strikeout totals in someone's first 5 games or something like that, bottom line is he's doing things that not a lot of rookies have done, and he's doing it in Pittsburgh. The team has series against the Brewers and Giants, two tough teams, before a much gentler batch of games against the Rockies and A's, and with the more tepid tides pulling into Pittsburgh, fans are growing worried.

Max Fried pitched a three-hitter for Atlanta’s first nine-inning complete game since 2022, Adam Duvall had a two-run homer and and the Atlanta Braves blanked the Miami Marlins for the second night in a row, 5-0. After a dismal start to the season, Fried has recaptured the form that made him one of baseball’s top starters. It helped to be facing the struggling Marlins, who dropped to 6-19 and have gone 20 innings without scoring a run. They remained 0-for-Atlanta after getting blanked 3-0 in the series opener Monday.
