It's not known if the interest is mutual, however it only makes sense for the Marlins to see what they can get for the impending free-agent. The Rangers have been thought to be the favorite to land Cantu in recent days, but Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reported this morning that the Giants have stepped up their efforts to acquire him.

7/28/10 - The Dodgers have re-signed utility infielder Juan Castro to a Minor League contract, and he has reported to the club's Camelback Ranch-Glendale complex in Arizona. The 38-year-old Castro was released by Philadelphia on July 17. He signed with the Phillies as a free agent after spending the 2009 season with the Dodgers as the backup shortstop. That was his second stint with the Dodgers, having originally signed with the club in 1991 and playing parts of his first five Major League seasons in Los Angeles.

Like the Rangers, who also have interest in Cantu, the Rockies are looking for a right-handed run-producer. Cantu has hit .260/.308/.410 this season with 10 home runs and 54 RBI in 366 at-bats. Moving him would allow the Marlins to free up playing time for recently-recalled prospect Logan Morrison.

7/28/10 - Marlins placed OF Chris Coghlan on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 26, with a torn left meniscus. Coghlan suffered the injury while celebrating Wes Helms' walkoff home run on Sunday and will visit a few doctors before deciding whether to have surgery. Either way, he's likely to miss at least six weeks. Logan Morrison has been promoted from Triple-A New Orleans and will split time in left field with Emilio Bonifacio. Coghlan will leave behind a .268/.335/.383 batting line.

He had collected four hits on Monday when he also became the first Twins' rookie to smack a grand slam for his first major league homer. "Absolutely amazing. It's absolutely amazing," said South Shore Baseball Connoisseur Tom Griffin. "And to think, I just had the guy on my roto team. This calls for stricter trade measures, on my part, anyways. No more trades with THAT guy!"
