| Gary Sheffield (DH - DET) |
| 5/15/08 |
The left-field experiment for Sheffield is over. He has resumed the role of DH for Detroit. Manager Jim Leyland believes playing the field would not help his shoulder to heal. He will see some time in left this weekend as the team travels to Arizona for interleague play. |
|

Bartlett was scratched from Thursday's game as he dealt with a family situation. It is unknown if he will be available for the Rays over the weekend in St. Louis. |

Haynes cleared waivers and the Rays are waiting to see if he will accept assignment to AAA. |

|
| Mark Mulder (P - STL) |
| 5/15/08 |
Mark Mulder expressed optimism Wednesday, a day after he threw a bullpen session, and the left-hander hopes to return to game action soon.
Mulder, who is recuperating from 2007 rotator cuff surgery, made five Minor League rehabilitation starts before returning to the disabled list with what the Cardinals called a "mild rotator cuff strain." He sat for a week before getting back on the mound on Tuesday, and he felt no ill effects after his most recent mound session.
"I just feel a lot better," Mulder said. "I didn't really think that a few days would do much. I just kind of thought it would feel the same. But throwing yesterday, my arm felt a lot better. Why, I'm not really sure, but it just did."
Mulder likely benefited from the time off, but perhaps a greater benefit in the long run was the ability to start with a fresh 30 days on his rehabilitation clock. He does not need to spend 15 more days shelved before he returns to Minor League games, and Mulder believes he is close to being ready to get back in a game.

|
| Tyler Johnson (P - STL) |
| 5/15/08 |
Tyler Johnson underwent surgery on his ailing left shoulder on Wednesday, and while the procedure was successful, Johnson will be out for quite a long time.
According to a release from the team, Johnson had "arthroscopic surgery with debridement of scar tissue" in his pitching shoulder. He is expected to be unavailable for what the team said is "a minimum of six months." Johnson was initially diagnosed with tendinitis and a rotator cuff strain, though the club has more recently called his injury "capsulitis."
The operation brings an end to a lengthy period of uncertainty. Johnson first came down with shoulder trouble early in Spring Training, and he didn't appear in a single Grapefruit League game. Rehabilitation appeared to take, though, and Johnson finally began throwing off a mound recently.

|
| Brett Myers (P - PHI) |
| 5/15/08 |
Brett Myers is just awful right now...and I am trying to be nice. Myers continues to think he can blow away batters with his fastball without setting them up with other pitches. |
| Ryan Howard (1B - PHI) |

Johnson tried for more than two months to address his shoulder trouble non-surgically, and got as far as throwing off a mound. However, the rehab didn't progress as well as he or the team hoped, so he will have an operation.
"It's just not responding," Mozeliak said on Tuesday afternoon.
|
|
| Mark Mulder (P - STL) |
| 5/14/08 |
Mark Mulder's down time was brief.
Mulder threw off a mound on Tuesday, seven days after he was shut down due to what the Cardinals called a mild rotator cuff strain. He threw 40 pitches -- all of them sinking fastballs -- under the watch of pitching coach Dave Duncan.
"He's trying to get the same sinker that he had prior to surgery," Duncan said Tuesday. "We're trying to recover that. It's not quite there yet, but we're working on it. That's a big key for him."
Mulder underwent a second operation in September to repair rotator cuff damage in his pitching shoulder. He went on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment, making five starts at three levels before being shut down.
However, the seven-day break seems to have eased Mulder's discomfort.
"Physically, he feels good," Duncan said. "He was going after it pretty hard for a while. Take a little break, and he felt good today."
Once Mulder is ready to begin pitching in games, he gets a new 30-day clock for a Minor League rehab assignment.
|
|
| Jason Isringhausen (P - STL) |
| 5/14/08 |
No matter how much he wants to be on the mound with a lead in the ninth, Cardinals reliever Jason Isringhausen won't face a situation like that anytime soon.
Speaking to the media prior to Tuesday night's game against Pittsburgh, manager Tony La Russa said he would prefer for the struggling righty to pitch in low-leverage situations -- moments when he won't dramatically affect the outcome of the game. But La Russa admitted that may not always be the case.
"There's no doubt he's going to appear in important situations, because we don't have any pitchers," La Russa said. "I just don't think you'll have the luxury of giving him four or five appearances in non-pressure situations."
|
|
