"A glimmer [of hope], that's a good way to put it," manager Tony La Russa said. "But he still has to do a lot. Mike Aviles (SS/2B - KC)
7/1/09 Aviles will require tommy john surgery on his right elbow and is out for the season. Typical recovery time is about 12 months but may be shorter for a hitter. He is worth stashing in keeper and dynasty leagues but has no value for the 2009 season.

Edinson Volquez (P - CIN)
7/1/09 Injured Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez got the good news he was seeking, even if it came tagged with a "but." Volquez was cleared to resume throwing again, but he has to start his program over from square one. Already expected to be out through at least the All-Star break, the 25-year-old Volquez is 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA in nine starts. He's thrown in just one inning since May 16 when he went on the DL for the first time with back spasms. The tendinitis issue happened during his June 1 return.

Ryan Madson (P - PHI)
7/1/09 Ryan Madson is back in his 8th inning set-up role but has not been able to get the game to Brad Lidge lately. Madson allowed a run to score on 2 walks and a hit to take his 4th blown save on the year.

Joe Blanton (P - PHI)

The umpires called the game off in the top of the seventh inning during a third delay. Lee turned in his shortest start since he went 2-2/3 innings in an 11-0 loss to the White Sox on May 29, 2006. He also had a 47-game streak of lasting until the fifth inning broken.

7/1/09 Saunders (8-5) lasted only 3-2/3 innings against the Rangers who beat the Angels, 9-5, in Arlington last night. He gave up four home runs in a game for the first time in his 80 career starts (40-20). He gave up three long balls and seven runs in 5-1/3 innings at Rangers Ballpark on May 15.

Rafael Betancourt (P - CLE)
7/1/09 Betancourt (DL: strained right groin) will throw a two-inning or 35-pitch simulated session Thursday at Progressive Field. If he has no setbacks, he might begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Friday.

7/1/09 In Lewis’s last start, he pitched four innings and gave up just one hit; but he has not reached the point where he subjectively feels 100 percent. Dr. James Andrews will examine him in Birmingham, Ala., next week. The Indians are not recommending surgery for him.

Grady Sizemore (OF - CLE)
7/1/09 Indians' trainer Lonnie Soloff said that Sizemore is playing through pain, and that he will probably have arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow at season's end. He played last night and went 0-for-3 and is batting .223.
