8/18/25 Rangers Young Infielder an Intriguing Potential Offseason Trade Chip. The Texas Rangers caught fire ahead of the MLB trade deadline this year, which cemented the front office's choice of being buyers, looking to bolster the roster for a postseason push down the stretch. The Rangers entered deadline day with a 57-52 record and a few needs to address. The team didn't acquire any hitters and while the bullpen was upgraded with the additions of Danny Coulombe from the Minnesota Twins and Phil Maton from the St. Louis Cardinals, it wasn't the kind of splash to move the needle much. Texas did acquire the best starting pitcher on the move, Merrill Kelly, from the Arizona Diamondbacks to reinforce that strength.

8/16/25 Rangers Bullpen Had Another Disastrous Outing Against Blue Jays. The Texas Rangers now find themselves under .500 once again at 61-62. Closing out games has definitely proven to be their biggest issue, including a pair of their acquisitions at the trade deadline, Phil Maton and Danny Coulombe. Although those two haven't been the only issues lately, as Robert Garcia has not looked good in his last few outings. When Jacob deGrom stepped off the mound last night after his start against the Toronto Blue Jays the score was 3-0 in favor of the Rangers.

8/14/25 Rangers' Phil Maton Explains What Went Wrong for Him in Latest Gut-Punch Loss. All season long, everyone has been waiting for the Texas Rangers to flip a switch. Following a strong offseason where they upgraded the weak spots on their roster and got key guys back healthy after plenty missed a good chunk of last year, the sky was expected to be the limit for this Rangers squad that had just won the World Series in 2023. Texas' last game was a microcosm of their entire campaign, with the offense not doing enough to help out a strong starting pitching performance which resulted in another late-innings heartbreaker. This time, it was Phil Maton on the mound.

8/13/25 Cardinals Manager Oli Marmol Addresses Matthew Liberatore Concerns. The St. Louis Cardinals have been through a lot this year. Despite being four games out of a postseason spot, the Cardinals appear dead following the front office's decision to trade Phil Maton, Steven Matz, and Ryan Helsley at the trade deadline. In the long run, these will be good moves, but right now, it looks like the Cardinals gave up on a chance to make the postseason. One of the most important building blocks on the roster is pitcher Matthew Liberatore, who looked like a potential ace early in the year.

8/12/25 Cardinals Predicted To Cut Ties With 10-Year Veteran All-Star Pitcher. The St. Louis Cardinals were on the cusp of being a postseason contender this season, but they opted to sell and continue their rebuild rather than make an ill-advised push for the World Series in a league with multiple loaded powerhouse rosters. The Cardinals offloaded expiring relievers Phil Maton, Ryan Helsley, and Steven Matz with the Helsley trade being the nail in the coffin. Now, St. Louis has a few more moves to make before the year ends. FanSided's Zachary Rotman recently predicted the Cardinals would cut ties with veteran starting pitcher Miles Mikolas ahead of the end of the season.

8/09/25 Cardinals Predicted To Move 25-Year-Old Infielder In Offseason Trade. The St. Louis Cardinals and president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, took to the trade deadline to make a few big moves, while also staying semi-conservative. St. Louis traded Phil Maton, Ryan Helsley, and Steven Matz to the Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox, respectively.

8/08/25 Cardinals Predicted To Make Stunning Oli Marmol Contract Decision. The St. Louis Cardinals have been through quite a roller coaster ride of a season this year. This caused the front office to sell at the deadline rather than buy, like many expected early in the year. The Cardinals traded Phil Maton, Ryan Helsley, and Steven Matz to the Texas Rangers, New York Mets, and Boston Red Sox, respectively. Heading into the offseason, the Cardinals are set to make changes in the front office, too.

8/02/25 Cardinals Only Expected to Make One More Trade Before Deadline. A trade of Phil Maton is expected to be the Cardinals' final move of the deadline, meaning St. Louis will hold onto Brendan Donovan, Lars Nootbaar, and others.

8/01/25 Yankees Almost Stole Ryan Helsley From Mets In Deadline Deal. The St. Louis Cardinals had quite an exciting couple of days leading up to the trade deadline, though it likely wasn't the excitement that the fans had imagined. Phil Maton was dealt to the Texas Rangers while Steven Matz was traded to the Boston Red Sox. The Mets now pair Helsley with a loaded bullpen led by closer Edwin Diaz.

7/31/25 Cardinals Expected To Make 'Final Trade' With This Player. Three St. Louis Cardinals players have been all but ruled out in trades, while one player is still expected to be moved. The Athletic's Katie Woo provided an eleventh-hour trade deadline update on Thursday afternoon concerning the Cardinals and their remaining trade chips. “Barring a last-minute change, Phil Maton is expected to be the final trade for the Cardinals,” Woo wrote.

7/31/25 MLB rumors: Rangers linked to Cardinals, Royals relievers at trade deadline. As the MLB trade deadline looms, the Texas Rangers have emerged as active players in the relief market . They already have clear targets in mind. According to Ken Rosenthal of MLB Network, the Rangers have shown strong interest in two bullpen arms . These include Phil Maton of the St. Louis Cardinals and Hunter Harvey of the Kansas City Royals . For a Rangers team still clinging to postseason hopes , bullpen reinforcement has become a priority. Despite boasting a talented core, Texas has battled inconsistency from its relievers throughout the season. Their bullpen ERA has hovered in the bottom half of the league. This has prompted front office executives to explore options capable of stabilizing

7/25/25 Cardinals' Phil Maton Linked To Trade To AL Powerhouse. The St. Louis Cardinals are seemingly ready to enter sell mode this year. Because of that, players like Phil Maton and Ryan Helsley, both expiring relievers, have found themselves on the trade block. Redbird Rants' Brendan Strieker recently suggested that the Houston Astros could be one of the best landing spots in a trade involving Maton.

7/24/25 Yankees-Cardinals Deal? Trade Deadline Rumors Heating Up. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently discussed some of the top names available at the trade deadline. One of the names Reuter discussed was St. Louis Cardinals reliever Phil Maton. With Maton sitting on an expiring contract, it seems quite likely he's traded away. "Few pitchers have done a better job limiting hard contact this season than Maton, who ranks among the MLB leaders in hard-hit rate allowed (97th percentile), average exit velocity allowed (100th percentile) and barrel rate allowed (97th percentile)," Reuter wrote.

7/18/25 Cardinals Predicted To Stun Market By Withholding High-Value Trade Chip. The St. Louis Cardinals could be one of the most active teams to sell before the July 31 trade deadline but it doesn't sound as if that's the direction they're planning to travel down. Genuine playoff contenders, such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, would likely be first in line to take a shot at trading for pieces in the Cardinals' bullpen, such as right-handed pitcher Phil Maton and left-handed pitcher Steven Matz -- ideal rental options who've excelled in 2025.

6/23/25 Cardinals $2 Million Reliever Could Help Phillies Fill Biggest Deadline Need. The St. Louis Cardinals are playing much better baseball following a six-game losing streak. After back-to-back series wins, they are back to six games above the .500 mark and only one game back in the National League Wild Card race. Tim Kelly of Bleacher Report noted that the Philadelphia Phillies need a high-leverage reliever. The Cardinals could help with that by sending Phil Maton their way.

6/11/25 MLB Writer Suggests Cardinals To Use Breakout Star As Trade Chip. The St. Louis Cardinals are in a tough spot ahead of the trade deadline this season. St. Louis will likely do a bit of both this season. FanSided's Curt Bishop recently suggested the Cardinals could use their lone free agent signing of the offseason, Phil Maton, as a trade chip this trade deadline season.

6/06/25 Cardinals Urged To Trade Breakout Star Pitcher. The St. Louis Cardinals seemed primed to rebuild this season which would have seen them trading away a lot of their expiring assets while holding onto their controllable players. Curt Bishop of Redbird Rants recently made the case that the Cardinals should entertain the idea of trading breakout reliever Phil Maton this season. Not to the degree that they would if Helsley were to be traded, but it could still be solid. Better yet, Maton could be used to help the Cardinals upgrade other areas of their roster, such as the starting rotation.

6/02/25 Cardinals $2 million reliever could be 'expendable' at trade deadline. The St. Louis Cardinals have played their way back into contention after starting the season 14-19. What they'll do at the trade deadline is not entirely clear. Scott Plaza of Redbird Rants listed reliever Phil Maton as somebody who could be expendable. Teams may be hesitant to give up too much for a rental and settle for a cheaper, effective option in Maton.
