6/28/25 Minnesota Vikings all-quarter century team: Best players of last 25 years. Who are the Vikings' best player(s) at every position over the past 25 seasons? How do you weigh peak performance against longevity? Oh, and my hypothetical coaching staff will have Kevin O'Connell as head coach and offensive coordinator, with Mike Zimmer running the defense. Brett Favre and Sam Darnold (!) have had two of the better individual QB seasons of the century for the Vikings, but it's just one apiece.

6/25/25 Scott Frost Credits Rams with Reigniting Passion for Football. Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams have created an environment, a home where coaches can come in and rebuild their careers from the fired ruins they left. In the same way Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide rebuilt the careers for Steve Sarkisian, Lane Kiffin, and others, McVay's work with Mike LaFleur, Kevin O'Connell, and now Scott Frost speaks for itself. Frost, once Lincoln, Nebraska's most beloved son, was unceremoniously fired as head coach of the Cornhuskers, somehow finding his way to Los Angeles where in a recent piece by Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer, Frost details what happened with the Rams that led to his return to UCF, the place he built his legacy at.

6/02/25 How's J.J. McCarthy looking? Vikings June 2 OTA practice takeaways. The Vikings held their fourth practice of the Organized Team Activities (OTAs) phase of their offseason schedule on Monday, and the second one open to members of the media. Results in this portion of the offseason — which Kevin O'Connell commonly refers to as the "teaching and learning phase" — don't ever mean much. This is about installing plays and getting McCarthy comfortable operating the offense. In live 7-on-7 action (all 11-on-11 reps were done at half speed), McCarthy threw an interception to new cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, who undercut an outbreaking Jordan Addison route on the left side of the field.

The honor comes on the heels of his third season at the Vikings helm, during which he led Minnesota to a 14-3 record in the regular season and appearance in the postseason.

5/28/25 Vikings linked to jaw-dropping trade that would flip the NFC North upside down. Head coach Kevin O'Connell promised it after last year's playoff loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and free from some notable financial shackles the Minnesota Vikings spent money and draft capital to fortify the trenches on both sides of the ball. Beyond Byron Murphy Jr., and to whatever extent Brian Flores' strong belief in free agent addition Isaiah Rodgers' untapped upside holds water, the cornerback room has question marks. Flores' scheme can certainly mask some deficiencies on the back end, but almost any list of recommended further additions for the Vikings includes cornerback; in general as a position of need, or with mention of specific names who seem to fit.

5/19/25 Vikings' J.J. McCarthy projected to lead NFL in brutal stat category. Head coach Kevin O'Connell and the Minnesota Vikings managed quarterback Sam Darnold in two key areas last season: sacks and interceptions. Per well-known ESPN prognosticator and analyst Mike Clay, O'Connell could have similar issues in 2025 with first-year starter J.J. McCarthy taking the reins. Clay recently released his annual NFL projections for all 32 teams, and he has McCarthy standing alone in one unfavorable category for a young QB: interceptions.

5/16/25 Buried Vikings trade rumor involving Kevin O'Connell just exploded back to life. On Thursday, it was revealed that Williams and O'Connell had such a good meeting at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine before that year's NFL Draft that it led to the young quarterback wanting to play for the Vikings instead of the Bears. Combine this with the rumors that were swirling this past January about multiple teams from around the league having interest in trading for O'Connell, and it actually seems likely that Chicago was one of the teams that, at the very least, contacted Minnesota about possibly making a deal for its head coach.

5/12/25 Is Rams' Mike LaFleur On Verge of a HC Job?. The Los Angeles Rams have a recent history of producing NFL head coaches with Matt LaFleur, Kevin O'Connell, Raheem Morris, Brandon Staley, Zac Taylor, and Liam Coen serving as recent examples. It's already a foregone conclusion that Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula will be hired as a head coach but could Mike LaFleur join him?

The biggest nugget from Kevin O'Connell on Monday afternoon at TCO Performance Center came roughly 20 minutes into his press conference. After answering multiple questions about J.J. McCarthy, the first-round draft pick who didn't play as a rookie because of a torn meniscus, O'Connell provided an important update about the future franchise quarterback as the Minnesota Vikings arrived back in the building for the start of their offseason program. “I'd consider him full,” O'Connell said.
