GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Blaine Gabbert isn't coming back to help Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur do what they did in 2018, when he led his new team to an unlikely victory after becoming the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback in Week 2 after Marcus Mariota was injured in the opener.

5/30/24 Chiefs Improve in Backup QB Rankings; Where Does Carson Wentz Land?. In an ideal world, the Kansas City Chiefs hope to never need a backup quarterback for more than preseason games and mop-up duty in blowout wins or meaningless Week 18 matchups. The league's backup quarterbacks were the topic of a recent ranking by Gilberto Manzano on SI.com, and the Chiefs improved their standing from 2023 to 2024. The Chiefs moved on from last season's QB2, Blaine Gabbert, in favor of 2016 No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz this offseason. Gabbert remains a free agent, while Wentz is on a one-year deal with KC for the 2024 season.

4/03/24 North Dakota State Alum Wentz Inks 1-Year Deal with KC Chiefs. After a few years with Blaine Gabbert in that enviable role, Carson Wentz has now inked a 1-year deal that presumably puts him in that #2 spot on the roster. Wentz, who officially joins his 5th NFL team and 5th in the last 5 years, will be in the mix to backup All-Pro QB Patrick Mahomes.

1/08/24 Chiefs stock watch: Which players impressed during Week 18 vs. Chargers?. The outcome of Week 18 bore no influence on the Kansas City Chiefs heading into postseason play next weekend. The Los Angeles Chargers were focused on playing out the string and giving their fans a moment to smile, while Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave his backup quarterback and many reserves time on the field. The offense led at quarterback by veteran backup Blaine Gabbert was utilizing the availability of Mecole Hardman, who shook the rust off after spending most of his second tenure with the Chiefs on injured reserve. La'Michael Perine was effective as the every-down running back while the team dealt with injuries to tackles Jawaan Taylor and Wanya Morris in the first half.

1/05/24 Chiefs visit Chargers with some stars pushing to play. With no ground to gain in the AFC playoff picture by beating the host Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, the Kansas City Chiefs are in preservation mode in the regular-season finale. Blaine Gabbert will start in place of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and multiple regularsare headed for plenty of rest in a game head coach Andy Reid said would be used as a good audition for younger players. Gabbert said he told the team, "Go out there and have fun." Win or lose to the Chargers (5-11), Kansas City (10-6) owns the No. 3 seed in the AFC regardless of any outcome on the Sunday schedule.

1/03/24 Patrick Mahomes will take a seat in Week 18. Blaine Gabbert gets the start

Andy Reid just confirmed the Chiefs would sit some starters in Sunday's game at LA Chargers, Patrick Mahomes included. Blaine Gabbert will make his first start at QB for Chiefs and first start for any team since 2018. (Adam Teicher on X)

FF Today's Take: In addition to Mahomes, it's unlikely that we'll see Isiah Pacheco, Rashee Rice or Travis Kelce very much if at all in this meaningless game for the Chiefs. Kelce does need 16 yards reach 1000 for the season. At running back, we could see a lot of La'Mical Perine and perhaps Deneric Prince will be called up from the practice squad.

8/21/23 Backup job to Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes remains tight as preseason finale nears. The Kansas City Chiefs know as well as any team in the NFL the importance of backup quarterbacks, and that makes the fact that coach Andy Reid called the competition for the spot too close to call after Monday's practice noteworthy. The Chiefs signed veteran Blaine Gabbert to fill the role of Chad Henne, who retired last season after five years as the primary backup to Patrick Mahomes.
