9/08/25	Broncos' Sean Payton passes 'tremendous, close friend' Mike Shanahan on NFL wins list. One of the coaches he moved past might be familiar in Broncos Country: Mike Shanahan. Payton's 171st regular-season win (152 in New Orleans and now 19 in Denver) lifted him past Shanahan and Tom Coughlin and into a tie for 17th all time. Interestingly, Payton is tied with Pete Carroll, who also notched No. 171 on Sunday in his debut coaching for Las Vegas. One year later, Steve Young announced his retirement on June 13, 2000, after numerous concussions, including one that ended his 1999 season. The winningest coach in Broncos history was passed over by a blue ribbon committee in charge of selecting a coaching candidate as a finalist for the 2025 class. The Hall announced Tuesday that Mike Holmgren is the lone finalist for consideration by the full selection committee.
