The Pittsburgh Pirates dominated the Red Sox 10-3 at Fenway Park on Saturday, Aug. 30, taking the series behind 12 hits and seven walks. Right-handed starter Johan Oviedo put together his longest start since returning from the injured list. Although he allowed six base runners, Oviedo still managed to make it through five innings on an economical 79 pitches.

8/21/25 Pirates Starting Pitcher Dominates in Return. The Pittsburgh Pirates got back one of their starting pitchers after a short stint away and he reminded everyone what makes him a strong option in the rotation. Right-handed starting pitcher Johan Oviedo made just his second outing for the Pirates in 2025, in the series finale vs. the Toronto Blue Jays at PNC Park on Aug. 20. Oviedo began his outing with a 10-pitch at-bat against Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer, who hit a slider inside in the upper corner of the strike zone just fair into the left field bleachers, putting the road team up 1-0.

8/20/25 Oviedo earns 1st major league win since 2023 as Pirates beat Blue Jays to take the series. Johan Oviedo earned his first major league win since 2023 and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Wednesday to take the three-game series. In his second start since having Tommy John surgery in late 2023, Oviedo (1-0) struck out six, allowed two hits, one run and had a walk in five innings.

8/19/25 Johan Oviedo returns for Pirates to face Blue Jays. Right-hander Johan Oviedo will get another chance to stick in Pittsburgh's rotation on Wednesday afternoon when he makes his second start of the season for the host Pirates against the Toronto Blue Jays. Oviedo (0-0, 18.00 ERA) will oppose Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (11-6, 4.22) in the decisive game of a three-game series. It will be Oviedo's first start since Aug. 4 when he made a brief return to the majors after sitting out more than a year following Tommy John surgery. Oviedo pitched only one inning against the San Francisco Giants that day and struggled, throwing 43 pitches and allowing two runs on two hits and three walks despite striking out three.

A Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher had another solid showing in their most recent outing in the minor leagues, as they aim for a return to the MLB. Right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo, playing for Triple-A Indianapolis, took on the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on the road on Aug. 15. Oviedo gave up four hits, two walks and two solo home runs, but also struckout seven batters over five innings and 75 pitches thrown, as Indianapolis came back and won 6-5.

8/12/25 Pirates GM Addresses Starting Pitcher's Return Timeline. Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed starting pitcher Johan Oviedo made a brief return, but ended back in the minors shortly after, causing fans confusion on when he'd come back and serve as a permanent part of the rotation. Oviedo made his 2025 debut with the Pirates in the series opener vs. the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park on Aug. 4. The Priates then sent Oviedo down the next day to Triple-A Indianapolis, bringing up right-handed relief pitcher Cam Sanders in his place. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington spoke about Oviedo on his radio shown on 93.7 The Fan on Aug. 10 with Greg Brown, the play-by-play commentator for the Pirates.

8/10/25 Pirates Relief Pitcher Clears Waivers. Other MLB teams had a chance to pick up a Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher, but he is still with the team. The Pirates designated left-handed relief pitcher Génesis Cabrera for assignment on Aug. 4, as they made room for right-handed starting pitcher Johan Oviedo on the 26-man roster, who made his season debut vs. the San Francisco Giants at PNC Park that same day.

8/05/25 Pirates Call Up New Pitcher. The Pittsburgh Pirates brought up a new pitcher to their team, who will join ahead of the next game. Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reported that the Pirates are selecting the contract of right-handed pitcher Cam Sanders from Triple-A Indianapolis and that they will option right-handed starting pitcher Johan Oviedo. Sanders signed with the Pirates in the offseason and started out with Double-A Altoona, where he had a 2-0 record in 18 appearances, a 1.90 ERA over 23.2 innings pitched, nine saves in 10 opportunities, 26 strikeouts to 13 walks, a .154 opposing batting average and a 1.06 WHIP.

Nearly two years after he last pitched in a major league game, Johan Oviedo is ready to return to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 27-year-old right-hander will get the start on Monday against the visiting San Francisco Giants and veteran Justin Verlander. The teams are set to open a three-game series after Pittsburgh swept a three-game set last week in San Francisco. The Pirates fell Friday and Saturday against the Colorado Rockies before earning a 9-5 victory in Denver on Sunday.

7/30/25 Injured Pirates Starting Pitcher Gets Closer to Return. A Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher made another important step, as they fight back from a serious injury. The Pirates announced that they transferred the rehab assignment of right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo from Double-A Altoona to Triple-A Indianapolis on July 29. Oviedo made his first start with Indianapolis that same day, facing off against the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, on the road.
