8/28/25 MLB Insider Explains Red Sox's Aroldis Chapman's Revival. Of pitchers who have made at least 40 appearances this season, no one can match Chapman's career-low 1.04 ERA. On the latest edition of his ESPN Podcast, MLB insider Buster Olney explains why the southpaw is dominating this season. “Apparently in spring training this year, Connor Wong was catching him in a game,” Olney begins.

The Red Sox and Astros will play the final game of their three-game series Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. eastern. Righty Walker Buehler (7-6, 5.40 ERA) will start for Boston opposite righty Hunter Brown (9-5, 2.51 ERA). Starting catcher Carlos Narváez will receive a scheduled day off. 8/09/25 Red Sox's Alex Cora Gives Honest Connor Wong Assessment With Demotion Looming. It's the time of year in Major League Baseball when players start to run out of slack. The Boston Red Sox's catching situation was at a crossroads entering this weekend's three-game series against the San Diego Padres. Starter Carlos Narváez is nursing a knee injury, backup Connor Wong has struggled all year, and the Red Sox just claimed Ali Sanchez, who has no minor-league options, off waivers. The message to Wong was clear: If Narváez doesn't need a stint on the injured list, you're in danger of being sent to Triple-A.

8/08/25 Red Sox add catcher from Blue Jays; he will join team in San Diego. SAN DIEGO — The Boston Red Sox claimed catcher Alí Sanchez off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. He is in San Diego and will be added to Boston's 26-man roster. A source said the Red Sox are “still working through” roster moves. So it's unclear whether Carlos Narváez (knee) is headed to the IL or the Red Sox will option Connor Wong to Triple-A Worcester. If Narváez is day-to-day, Boston also could go with three catchers on the 26-man roster temporarily and option either reliever Isaiah Campbell or utility man David Hamilton to Worcester. Another source also told MassLive it is not yet a certainty that Narváez goes on the IL with the knee issue that plagued him earlier this week. Narváez

8/06/25 Carlos Narváez, initially thought to have cramps, out of Red Sox' lineup with a knee issue. When asked if Narváez would require a stint on the injured list, Cora said “we're not there yet.” Backup catcher Connor Wong was in the lineup, which marked his third start in four days. Wong had not started three of four games since May. Wong, who entered the season as Boston's starting catcher before being supplanted by Narváez, has struggled at the plate in a reserve role — in 40 games, Wong is hitting just .155 with a .408 OPS and two RBIs.

7/31/25 Red Sox Reunion? World Series Champ Rumors Intensifying. The Boston Red Sox have some time left to add pieces ahead of the trade deadline and there have been rumors about the chance of adding a new backup catcher. Connor Wong hasn't had the season that he has wanted to have. Wong's bat has been a calling card for him, but hasn't been there this year. "Adding a backup catcher has been a tertiary priority for the Red Sox, behind the club's desire to add pitching and at first base," McCaffrey said.

7/29/25 Red Sox Sign 3-Team MLB Veteran To Bolster Catching Depth. The Boston Red Sox have a new catcher on a minor league deal. With starter Carlos Narváez approaching uncharted territory with his workload behind the plate and backup Connor Wong struggling mightily at the plate all season, the Red Sox have evidently been exploring their options to add emergency depth at the position. On Tuesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI posted a picture of Chadwick Tromp, a 30-year-old veteran who has played for three major league teams, in the Worcester Red Sox's dugout. At the time, the Red Sox and Minor League Baseball transaction log had yet to reflect anything about a signing.

7/25/25 Red Sox hitter in season-long slump has faced 'challenges' beyond adjusting to new role. Red Sox backup catcher Connor Wong's double to lead off the third inning Friday was his first extra-base hit this season. The 29-year-old led the Red Sox in starts behind the plate both in 2023 and '24. After starting seven of Boston's first 11 games, Wong fractured his left pinky finger and missed from April 8-May 2.

7/21/25 Red Sox Rumors: Reunion with 2018 World Series champ floated for trade deadline. Carlos Narváez has been a godsend to the Boston Red Sox behind the plate this season. The rookie backstop has become one of the most productive catchers in the American League in 2025 worth 3.0 WAR, slashing .273/.347/.439 with eight home runs and 30 RBI in his first full Major League campaign. Backup Connor Wong is slashing .149.235/.149 with a negative-0.6 WAR and hardly looks fit to assume the starting catcher role in the event that Narváez falters or suffers an injury that keeps him out for an extended period of time.

7/16/25 Red Sox Rumors: Reunion Worth Watching Before Trade Deadline. The Boston Red Sox have plenty of avenues to explore prior to the trade deadline, but one in particular is flying under the radar. Carlos Narváez has been an absolute revelation at catcher, stepping up and becoming one of the most productive players at his position in the American League — doing it all as a rookie. Connor Wong, on the other hand, has slidden down the ranks as quickly as his partner has risen, becoming one of the least valuable players in all of baseball this season — which isn't hyperbole. Boston likely can't survive this way.

6/29/25 Catcher Carlos Narváez continues to contribute as bright spot during dark days for Red Sox. After breaking spring training as the backup to Connor Wong, Narváez overtook the starting catcher role after Wong broke his finger on April 7. Narváez has run with the opportunity, producing a .272 average and .793 OPS — the fifth highest on the team. Behind the plate, Narváez is tied for the league lead in runners caught stealing (17) and runners picked off (3), and advanced metrics grade him as one of the league's top catchers in both pitch framing and blocks.

6/26/25 How Connor Wong has adjusted to Red Sox backup role in 'different' season than he expected. Connor Wong entered the regular season expecting to be the Red Sox' primary catcher once again after starting 105 games behind the plate in 2023 and 99 last year. Wong, who momentarily emerged as an All-Star candidate a year ago with a strong first half and seemed poised to take a leap this season after a winter in which he focused on defensive work, has not had the 2025 he envisioned. In the time since, Wong has seen his playing time — and role with the Red Sox dwindle significantly. After years of speculation about when prospect Kyle Teel would eventually overtake Wong, the Red Sox seemed to give Wong a vote of confidence when they traded Teel to Chicago in the Garrett Crochet deal last December.

6/23/25 Angels score early and late with help from Red Sox. The Angels took advantage of the Boston Red Sox again. An eighth-inning throwing error from catcher Connor Wong set up the go-ahead run in the Angels' 9-5 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night. The Angels scored their other five runs in a first inning in which Boston starter Walker Buehler walked four batters and hit two. The Angels also got out of a jam because of some questionable Red Sox baserunning.

6/19/25 Red Sox Could Snag New Backup Catcher From Dodgers In Crucial Trade. Are the Boston Red Sox overworking Carlos Narváez? Boston might need to bring in another catcher before the deadline to spell Narváez, especially given the Connor Wong situation. Despite Wong's defensive improvements, his offensive struggles this season (when healthy) have weighed heavily on the lineup. The door could be open for a new backup catcher.

6/11/25 Insane Stat Shows Just How Effective Red Sox Rookie Has Been This Season. Boston's catching duo has become the most quietly elite part of the roster, and there's a good chance they haven't come close to their ceiling. For all the chatter surrounding the Red Sox's youth movement and lineup reshuffling, the club's work behind the plate remains one of its most underrated strengths. Connor Wong has returned from an early season finger injury and has struggled mightily in limited appearances after a really strong 2024 campaign. In fact, Boston's catcher tandem is among the league's Top 10 in WAR, per Thomas Nestico on X.

5/26/25 Red Sox veteran's frustrated response after Memorial Day loss. The Boston Red Sox are on the wrong side of .500 with June right around the corner. On Memorial Day, the Red Sox dropped their third straight game, this time in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on the road. The Red Sox lost three in a row and four in a row earlier in May, so this is yet another losing streak for a team that had promise entering the season. The Red Sox scored a run in the top of the ninth and had the tying run at third, but Connor Wong hit a flyout to end the game.

5/20/25 Yankees Accidentally Gifted Red Sox Breakout Star. The Boston Red Sox entered this past offseason with some questions at the catcher position. In 2024, the Red Sox rolled out a tandem of Connor Wong and Reese McGuire for the most part. The Red Sox also acquired Danny Jansen. Neither Jansen nor McGuire are in the organization any longer.

5/15/25 Red Sox Must Make This Change To Lineup After 28-Year-Old's Latest Blunder. Major League Baseball lineups don't have to be set in stone, but it helps to define roles when possible. Right now, the Boston Red Sox need to define two players' roles. Coming into the season, the Red Sox had a clear starting catcher in Connor Wong, and a clear backup in Carlos Narváez. Wong struggled to begin the year, got hurt in mid-April, then came back in early May and is struggling again.
