San Diego Padres outfielder Oscar Gonzalez signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan. 2/09/25 Former Cleveland Guardians Fan Favorite Joins NL Contender. Cleveland Guardians fans surely remember Oscar Gonzalez, who took Progressive Field by storm when he burst onto the scene with a spectacular rookie campaign in 2022. Well, Gonzalez is now on the move. The 27-year-old outfielder, who departed Cleveland after being clamed off waivers by the New York Yankees in December 2023, has been invited to San Diego Padres spring training on a non-roster invite, the Padres announced. Gonzalez didn't see any big-league action in 2024 but did spend time in the Yankees' minor-league system, slashing .294/.337/.484 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI over 329 plate appearances.

Cleveland signed Gonzalez as an international free agent back in 2014, but the Dominican native was never able to establish himself as a top prospect.

New York Yankees outfielder Oscar Gonzalez suffered a right orbital fracture in Monday night's exhibition game in Mexico City. In the second inning, a fouled ball ricocheted off the handle of his bat and struck Gonzalez directly in the face, the play-by-play commentator described. Gonzalez fell to the ground for several moments. Gonzalez was treated for a right eye contusion at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium before being taken to ABC Medical Center.

12/02/23 Oscar Gonzalez's quest to rebound from a dreadful sophomore slump. Unlike the Yankees, Cleveland had a full 40-man roster before trying to pass Gonzalez through waivers. The Guardians were understandably seeking more flexibility by risking and ultimately losing an outfielder coming off one of the more putrid seasons in the American League last season. At the same time, no front office gives 40-man spots on a whim, and there is a path, however small, for Gonzalez to be a factor in the 2024 Yankees realistically.

Oscar Gonzalez, whose walk-off single beat the Yankees in Game 3 of the 2022 AL Division Series, was claimed by New York off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians on Friday. The 25-year-old outfielder is a right-handed hitter and batted .214 with two homers and 12 RBIs in 54 games this year. Gonzalez's 15th-inning homer off Tampa Bay's Corey Kluber completed a two-game Wild Card Series sweep in 2022.
