10/06/24 Chicago Cubs Reportedly Tried to Land Slugging Catcher at Trade Deadline. The Chicago Cubs went into the 2024 season ready to make some changes to their catcher position. Yan Gomes had been the primary starter the year prior, but with his age increasing and his offensive production leaving much to be desired, the Cubs decided to turn things over to Miguel Amaya with the veteran backing him up. The former top prospect had finally made his debut in 2023, showcasing a bit of what he could do that made the organization ready to see what his production might look like on a full-time basis. Chicago had the worst offensive production from the catcher position at one point in the season, prompting them to ultimately move on from Gomes and bring in multiple options behind Amaya who could hopefully provide run support.

7/03/24 Cubs 'looking for catching', could trade for top Mariners prospect before deadline. Could the Chicago Cubs deal their Gold Glove infielder to the Seattle Mariners for one of baseball's best catcher prospects? The catcher position is one of the most glaring areas of need for Chicago at present. None of the Cubs catchers have produced anything offensively this season. Chicago traded Yan Gomes in June after Gomes hit .154/ .179/ .242 through 34 games, and Gomes' replacement, Tomás Nido, has just one hit through his first seven games with the Cubs.

6/04/24 Insider Reveals What the Chicago Cubs Are Looking to Do at MLB Trade Deadline. The Chicago Cubs offense has been below average all year, struggling to manufacture runs throughout the lineup. Behind the plate, the Cubs catchers have been some of the worst in baseball offensively. Yan Gomes, 36 years old, is slashing .154/.173/.244 with two home runs in 78 at-bats. Miguel Amaya has been just as bad, slashing .186/.252/.271 with two home runs.

5/09/24 Cubs hoping to shake hitting funk in Pittsburgh. Yan Gomes' comebacker in the third inning — and struck out 15 times in a 3-0 setback to the San Diego Padres on Wednesday afternoon. Naturally, Chicago's offense — or lack thereof — was the primary topic of conversation following the team's seventh loss in the last 12 games. "We've done a good job of scoring what we need to but haven't put up a bunch of big numbers," outfielder Ian Happ said, per the Chicago Sun-Times. Happ hopes so, as he is batting just .225 while shortstop Dansby Swanson is hitting .209 to start the season.

2/16/24 Cubs have settled into consistency behind the plate with Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya. There are always a lot of catchers in spring training camp. The team needs depth at the position throughout the year, but it also needs backstops for all the bullpens and live batting practice sessions scheduled throughout the day. The Cubs are set up right now to rely on the duo of Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya again this season. Just a few years ago, they had a revolving door of backup catchers paired with Willson Contreras, using nine different catchers in 2021.

2/15/24 Shota Imanaga is ‘as advertised’ as the Chicago Cubs get to hands-on work with the Japanese lefty. MESA, Ariz. — Chicago Cubs veteran catcher Yan Gomes settled behind the plate Wednesday, getting eyes on Shota Imanaga as the left-hander stood on a bullpen mound at the team’s complex. It marked the early stages of their pitcher-catcher relationship and gave Gomes, known for how well he manages a pitching staff, a hands-on look at Imanaga’s stuff. Hendricks, the final remaining player from the Cubs' 2016 World Series-winning team, will make $16.5 million in 2024.

10/01/23 Cubs' playoff hopes vanish before they complete 10-6 victory over Brewers. Yan Gomes hit a grand slam, but the Chicago Cubs were eliminated from postseason contention during a 10-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Chicago’s game was going into the eighth inning when Miami finished its 7-3 victory at Pittsburgh, securing an NL wild card and knocking the Cubs out of the playoff race. It looked as if the Cubs were in good shape for a wild card when they improved to 78-67 with a 5-4 victory at Colorado on Sept. 11. But they dropped 11 of their next 15 games. Before the victory at Milwaukee, they had lost four in a row by a total of five runs. They also had dropped nine straight road games.

9/17/23 Chicago Cubs' tenuous hold on a playoff spot takes another hit with a gut-punching, walk-off loss in 13 innings. For a few moments, everyone in a Chicago Cubs uniform on the field and in the dugout at Chase Field was frozen as they took in the scene. Yan Gomes' diving, sweeping tag across home plate on right fielder Seiya Suzuki's throw just missed Evan Longoria's fingertips as he slid headfirst, sparking a wild celebration by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Cubs looked on in disbelief, a brief replay review upholding the call to punctuate a crushing 7-6 loss in 13 innings Saturday night. The Cubs had three chances in extra innings to close out a win but allowed the tying run to score in the 10th and 11th before back-to-back two-out singles in the 13th off Hayden Wesneski gave the Diamondbacks the walk-off win.
