6/08/25 Texas Rangers Name Starter for Bullpen Game Against Washington Nationals. The Texas Rangers will use its bullpen to work Sunday's series finale with the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon. After Saturday's game, manager Bruce Bochy named the starter — right-hander Jacob Latz. Bochy did not indicate how long Latz would pitch or the arrangement of the relievers after Latz. The only pitcher he said he intends to stay away from is right-handed reliever Chris Martin, who pitched the ninth inning of Saturday's victory over the Nationals.

6/06/25 Texas Rangers' Chris Martin remains in bullpen mix despite setback in Thursday warmups. Though Chris Martin has had to pull himself out of games in three of the four times the Rangers have tried to use him over the last three weeks, the team will keep him on the active roster for now. Martin, 39, was activated from the injured list Thursday, after missing 16 days because of what was labeled “right shoulder fatigue.” Asked to pitch the eighth in a game the Rangers led, he could not get loose, saying the shoulder was once again making a “popping noise.” On Friday, however, Martin met with trainers and coaches, threw on the field and pronounced himself ready to resume his role in the Rangers' bullpen.

6/05/25 Texas Rangers get out of 'holding pattern,' activate reliever Chris Martin. A day after saying the Rangers were in a “holding pattern,” on the potential activation of Chris Martin, the reliever was activated. A need arose with Kumar Rocker's short start on Wednesday and a spot opened up with his demotion on Thursday. Martin, who turned 39 on Monday, had been on the IL with right shoulder fatigue since May 19. On Wednesday afternoon, following Martin's bullpen session, manager Bruce Bochy said the club was in a “holding pattern,” because Martin's command wasn't as sharp as he'd like.

6/04/25 Return of Texas Rangers' Chris Martin in 'holding pattern' after bumpy bullpen session. Chris Martin is now eligible to be reinstated from the injured list, but eligibility is one thing, readiness another. After a bullpen session on Tuesday that seemed to still be lacking in command, the Rangers held off activating Martin from the IL on Wednesday. “We're in a holding pattern with him,” manager Bruce Bochy said. It wasn't clear if Martin, on the IL since May 19 with shoulder fatigue, would throw on Thursday in Tampa or if he would wait until the club goes to Washington for the weekend.

5/31/25 Rangers bullpen could soon get veteran boost as setup man Chris Martin nears return. The Texas Rangers are close to the return of one of their most valuable high-leverage arms. Veteran setup man Chris Martin will throw a live bullpen Sunday and could be “pretty close to being activated” if he responds well to the session. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy does not expect Martin, 38, to need a minor league rehab assignment. Martin hasn't pitched since he exited a May 18 game vs. the Houston Astros after just a single pitch. It was the second time in a three-appearance span that Martin lasted just one pitch.

5/20/25 Rangers pitcher lands on IL before Yankees clash. The Texas Rangers have placed veteran pitcher Chris Martin on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue, the team announced less than an hour before first pitch of their series opener against the New York Yankees. The move is retroactive to May 19 and the Rangers called up Cole Winn from Triple-A Round Rock as a corresponding move. Martin, a right-handed reliever, has already appeared in 22 games for Texas out of the bullpen.

5/19/25 Can the Texas Rangers find the right pieces to a complex bullpen puzzle?. Once again, Chris Young thinks the Rangers have evaded catastrophe in the bullpen. As the week began, the Rangers were anxiously awaiting yet another MRI reading on yet another relief pitcher, but Young was optimistic Chris Martin had dodged serious trouble. If nothing else, though, Martin walking off the mound after throwing one pitch twice in the course of a week ought to serve as a sign to the Rangers that they are sailing into dangerous waters: Overusage Bay. Martin, who turns 39 in two weeks, has appeared in 22 of the Rangers' first 48 games, making him the oldest pitcher in baseball with at least 20 appearances at this point.

5/18/25 Texas Rangers relief pitcher Chris Martin exits game after just one pitch — again. Texas Rangers right-handed relief pitcher Chris Martin exited Sunday's game vs. the Houston Astros with an apparent injury after just one single pitch. Martin, 38, also exited Tuesday's win vs. the Colorado Rockies after a single pitch. He experienced a “popping” feeling in his elbow, something he'd previously dealt with during his Atlanta Braves tenure, and chose to exercise caution.

5/16/25 Shawn Armstrong emblematic of Rangers' adaptable bullpen group amid crisis. Just when it seemed like the Rangers had averted a full-blown bullpen crisis, everything imploded. On Friday afternoon, Bruce Bochy expressed optimism that his two best high-leverage relievers, Chris Martin and Luke Jackson, would be back from injury scares. Also said that after a needed day off, Robert Garcia would be available. Instead, with the game on the line, the Rangers had lefty Hoby Milner facing a right-handed hitter and Shawn Armstrong, so good earlier in the week, pitching for the third time in four days and facing Houston a second straight night.

5/14/25 Texas Rangers receive good news on Chris Martin after he experienced 'popping' in elbow. The Rangers are not planning to put reliever Chris Martin on the IL, at least not yet. Martin, who threw just one official pitch Tuesday before leaving with “elbow tightness,” said an MRI Wednesday revealed no structural damage. The Rangers were encouraged enough that they decided to hold off at least a day. The Rangers also held off another day on any decision on Luke Jackson, who took a line drive off his hand on the first pitch he threw Monday night.

5/13/25 Texas Rangers reliever Chris Martin exits game with elbow tightness. A day after an injury scare to one reliever, the Texas Rangers are dealing with another apparent injury scare in the bullpen. Chris Martin was on for the save Tuesday night against the Rockies, but left the game after just one pitch. After the game, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Martin was experiencing “elbow tightness.” Martin specified that he felt a couple pops, but isn't in any pain.

5/09/25 Can the Rangers Continue to Rely On Veteran Reliever After Stellar Start to Season?. The Texas Rangers have had a very hit-or-miss start to the season, especially when it comes to their offensive output. There are many players or events to blame for the 18-20 start to the season, currently landing them in fourth place in the American League West. Ultimately, the team decided firing the hitting coach was the right direction to go, and while their offensive output has slightly improved, it will take time to see if that helped their long-term outlook. One of the most positive players for the team this season has been their offseason signing Chris Martin, a 39-year old reliever who despite having played 10 seasons in the MLB (and two overseas in Japan) is still throwing at an elite level in 2025.

3/30/25 Rangers capture gutty series win against the Red Sox, start 2025 season on the right track. Picture this: The Texas Rangers have a series lead and send possibly the best pitcher in baseball to the mound to close it out. It sounds nice, but, it'll take some time this season before the games start to resemble postseason play. Be the smartest Rangers fan. “I'm not going to lie,” veteran right-hander Chris Martin said Sunday afternoon, “that felt like a playoff series.”

3/29/25 Former Red Sox reliever Chris Martin feels right at home in Texas with Rangers. At 38, Martin is year to year with his baseball career and thinking more about what's best for his family. Martin felt it was time to prioritize spending as much time with his family as he could. The Rangers made him a competitive offer — one year for $5.5 million — and offered the opportunity to pitch for what should be a playoff contender. “Nothing against the Red Sox at all,” Martin said.

3/03/25 Texas Rangers Potential Closer Was Solid in Spring Training Debut Sunday. The Texas Rangers are searching for someone to fill the closer role for them in 2025. Chris Martin is one of the pitchers in contention to be the closer this year. The 38-year-old missed the beginning of camp due to an illness, but he was healthy enough to take the mound Sunday afternoon. In the outing, he pitched a scoreless, 15-pitch fourth inning that included a strikeout.

2/21/25 Red Sox Listed Among Early Trade Favorites For Cardinals $8.2 Million All-Star. As the 2025 regular season approaches, the Boston Red Sox's roster looks more solid from top to bottom than it has in years. After blowing more saves than any other team in the second half of the 2024 season, the Red Sox lost reliable veterans Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen, leaving the closer and setup roles as something of a mystery. While there's talent on the roster (see: Liam Hendriks, Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten), the Red Sox could still be due for upgrades to the bullpen as the season goes along.

2/07/25 Craig Breslow says Red Sox are still looking two address to key needs. After missing the postseason for the third year in a row in 2024, the Boston Red Sox entered this offseason with a pretty clear list of needs that they needed to address if they wanted to be considered true postseason contenders. “We're still very much engaged in trying to bring in a right-handed hitter, obviously one that we think can be a difference-maker,” Breslow said on the "Fenway Rundown" podcast. Boston also needed to add to their bullpen with Chris Martin, Kenley Jansen, Lucas Sims, Brad Keller, Luis Garcia, Chase Shugart and Cam Booser all hitting free agency or departing in trades.

1/28/25 3 Realistic Relievers Texas Rangers Could Pursue Before Spring Training Begins. The Texas Rangers have a problem in their bullpen; they don't have a closer. For a team that has the goal of contending for another World Series championship and winning their division for the first time since 2016, not having a true shutdown man they can rely on when things are tight is something that could haunt them. Chris Martin, one of their five offseason bullpen additions, seems like he could step into that role at the start of the year despite just having 14 careers saves in 30 opportunities. There are still options out there, but since the Rangers wanted to shed salary this winter that gets their payroll under the $241 million Competitive Balance Tax threshold to reduce their tax penalties going forward, the current $235 million salary on the books doesn't give them a lot of room to go out and sign an impact arm.

1/24/25 Texas Rangers Should Make Aggressive Move for This Star Reliever. There was a clear plan in place from the Texas Rangers' front office to improve their bullpen this winter. After their unit finished 26th with a 4.41 ERA, Chris Young scoured the free agency market and trade options to boost the relief staff by signing Chris Martin, Hoby Milner, Jacob Webb and Shawn Armstrong, then acquiring Robert Garcia and Mason Molina.

1/16/25 Texas Rangers Veteran Free Agent Reliever Garnering Interest From New York Yankees. The Texas Rangers have revamped their bullpen this offseason, putting an emphasis on improving their relief pitching depth. Out of their seven free agent signings, four of them were bullpen arms; Chris Martin, Hoby Milner, Shawn Armstrong and Jacob Webb. Two more relievers were added via trade with Robert Garcia and Mason Molina coming over from the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers, respectively.
