5/10/24 Jose Abreu Demotion Already Paying Off For Houston Astros. It's been less than two weeks since the Houston Astros mercifully demoted struggling first baseman Jose Abreu to the minor leagues, and the move is already paying major dividends. At the time he was sent down, Abreu was batting an anemic .099/.156/.113 with no homers, three RBIs and considerably more strikeouts (18) than hits (seven), enduring one of the worst offensive starts in MLB history. In just 22 games, he managed to be worth -1.5 WAR, making him a main culprit for the Astros' horrendous start. Replacing Abreu with literally anyone else should have yielded better results, and sure enough, that's exactly what's happened.

5/01/24 New-look Astros seek back-to-back wins vs. Guardians. Hours after the Astros made the shocking move of optioning veteran first baseman Jose Abreu to allow him to work on his swing at its Florida spring training facility, his replacements played a role in Houston's 10-9, 10-inning victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. The Astros claimed the opener of this three-game series, set to continue on Wednesday in Houston, by erasing a three-run, first-inning deficit and later getting a two-run, walk-off homer from pinch-hitter Victor Caratini. Joey Loperfido and Jon Singleton — the players most impacted by the Abreu move — delivered timely hits that keyed the Astros' five-run frame in the fourth inning. It was the MLB debut for Loperfido, a top prospect in the organization.

4/21/24 Astros GM gets brutally honest on Jose Abreu's disastrous slump. Much like the Houston Astros as a whole, Jose Abreu's 2024 campaign has gotten off to a dreadful start. Abreu's struggles haven't gone unnoticed by general manager Dana Brown, who gave his honest review of the first baseman's performance. Abreu has started his season on a brutal 4-for-59 at the plate. Brown has not been impressed with what he has seen, but is hopeful that Abreu can bounce back, via Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

Houston Astros Top Prospect Named Pacific Coast League Player Of Week Houston Astros Top 10 prospect Joey Loperfido tore the cover off the ball during an epic week for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Author: Matthew Postins Apr 15, 2024 In this story: Houston Astros Joey Loperfido MLB A top Houston Astros prospect is the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week after an incredible offensive week for the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys. Joey Loperfido is coming off an enormous week that has Astros fans buzzing about his potential for being called up as Astros first baseman Jose Abreu continues to struggle at the plate. Recently, Astros general manager Dana Brown talked about that prospect with

4/14/24 MLB rumors: The $58.5 million Astros slugger scouts are 'alarmed' about being toast. The Houston Astros signed Jose Abreu to a three-year, $58.5 million contract ahead of the 2023 season, and it has not gone to plan in the first two seasons, as he has had a stark drop-off in production since departing the Chicago White Sox. There is some concern coming from scouts regarding whether he can regain form. “Scouts are alarmed that Astros first baseman Jose Abreu's bat has drastically slowed and wonder how patient the team will be considering Abreu is in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today writes.

4/14/24 Prospect News: Tonight Is Right For Lonnie White Jr.. Astros 1B Joey Loperfido (24, AAA) already has nine home runs in 12 games this season while the major league club is getting minimal production from Jose Abreu and Jonathan Singleton. Abreu is making $19.5 million this year and 19.5 again in 2025. He has a wRC+ of negative 32 in his 12 games this season. Here’s what I wrote about Loperfido when I ranked him my number one in my Houston Astros Top 10 Prospects for 2024 Fantasy Baseball “A seventh-round pick in 2021, Loperfido produced better than average lines at each step along the way until a difficult 32-game stint in Triple-A to close out the 2023 season. In the box, he’s a 6’3” 230 lb lefty with power. In the field, he’s a right-handed thrower with enough athleticism that he’s a real option in center field. In 84 games at Double-A, he slashed .296/.392/.548 with 19 home runs and 20 stolen bases. I’m pretty bullish on his chances to carve out a role for himself in center or a corner outfield spot or at first base.”

2/21/24 Astros' Jose Abreu is way past White Sox saga and all about a ring; says, 'I'm a person that doesn't give up'. Jose Abreu's hair has gotten longer up top, and his next gray one will be his first. Last August, in his first season with the Astros, Abreu marked 10 years since his defection from Cuba. It's got to be greener on the American League favorites' side of the street now. Early last spring, the former MVP still was stung by what he called “disrespect” from the Sox and, in a conversation with the Sun-Times, choked up while trying to convey the feelings he still had for his big-league home for nine power-packed seasons.

1/14/24 Astros' Star Slugger 'Rebound' Candidate. Houston Astros' Star Slugger 'Rebound' Candidate in 2024 The Houston Astros first-baseman is viewed as a possible rebound candidate for the 2024 MLB season. Author: Jon Conahan Publish date: Jan 14, 2024 12:00 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros As the Houston Astros head into the 2024 season, there are players who need to perform at a higher level than they did in 2023. At the top of that list is former MVP Jose Abreu. Abreu, who will turn 37 before the season starts, had a tough stretch for most of the year. He had the worst season of his career, slashing .237/.296/.383 and finished with just 18 home runs, the second-fewest of his career. After hitting his career-low of 15 homers the season

Houston Astros' Star Slugger Could Get More 'Off Days' This Season Don't be surprised if the Houston Astros give one of their star sluggers some more rest during the upcoming regular season. Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Jan 3, 2024 11:30 AM EST In this story: Houston Astros While the Houston Astros have not made a big move this offseason, they certainly turned some heads following their World Series victory in 2022 after they signed slugging first baseman, Jose Abreu, to a three-year, $58.5 million deal. He was seen as someone who would come in and make their vaunted lineup even scarier with added power and solid defense at first base. That did not happen for the 2020 AL MVP as he posted

11/19/23 Interesting Pitcher That Astros Could Pursue. Interesting Pitching Target That Houston Astros Could Pursue in Free Agency The Houston Astros will look to add some pieces to their organization this offseason and could target this pitcher as a cheap option. Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Nov 19, 2023 7:30 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros Much of the offseason centers around the high-profile names on the market. Whether it's in free agency or available for trade, these players get the majority of attention. The Houston Astros aren't strangers to that either. They made a splash when signing first baseman and former MVP Jose Abreu to a three-year, $58.5 million contract before the 2023 season. It's unlikely that the Astros

10/20/23 Jose Abreu still manages to be an RBI machine in Houston. The Chicago White Sox let Jose Abreu leave. He chose to sign with the Houston Astros in free agency which turned out to be a marvelous decision for him. He is now on a winning team which is much better than being on the Chicago White Sox who are mostly a losing team. Abreu went to the Astros as they were defending their title as World Series champions. He wants to add a ring to his resume and now he has a good chance . They are currently in the middle of an amazing duel with the Texas Rangers in the ALCS. The series is tied at two games apiece. Abreu's regular season wasn't very good. He didn't look like his typical MVP-caliber player self. Those days might be over considering his age but he

10/12/23 White Sox: Jose Abreu can't stop hitting postseason home runs. The Chicago White Sox were eliminated from postseason contention for all intents and purposes back in April. It made the decision of José Abreu look smart as he left in free agency during the winter. Clearly, he didn't like what was going on with the White Sox going forward. The Astros still found a way to win their division again and make it to the playoffs.

10/12/23 Astros close out Twins, setting up ALCS showdown vs. Rangers - WTAW. One day after the Texas Rangers locked down a spot in the American League Championship Series, the Houston Astros clinched their seventh consecutive ALCS bid with a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins to win their division series 3-1. The Astros relied on the formula that has brought them so much postseason success in recent years, including during their World Series championship last year: home runs and pitching. Jose Abreu, their prized free agent signing over the winter, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to put the Astros ahead 3-1, and starter Jose Urquidy, followed by relievers Hector Neris, Bryan Abreu and Ryan Pressly, shut down a dangerous Twins lineup to secure a record-extending ALCS appearance.

10/11/23 Astros hang on to beat Twins, advance to 7th straight ALCS. Jose Abreu went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead, two-run homer and the Houston Astros held on for a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night to clinch the American League Division Series. The Astros secured a 3-1 win in the best-of-five series to advance to the AL Championship Series for the seventh season in a row. Only the Atlanta Braves have a longer streak of advancing to consecutive championship series, punching their ticket to eight straight National League Championship Series beginning in 1991. The defending World Series champions will meet the Texas Rangers in the best-of-seven ALCS, with the first game scheduled for Sunday in Houston.
