4/28/25 Phillies closer makes major change before extra-innings heroics at Cubs. Despite a winning record to start the season, the Philadelphia Phillies have been under some pressure. Facing what could be a final year to win with his current core of veteran stars, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski was grilled about his offseason decisions as the team's bullpen struggled mightily across the first 25 games. After Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez departed for new deals and closer addition Jordan Romano looked out of sorts on the mound, Dombrowski was forced to address his thinking last week. Entering the bottom of the tenth inning with a two-run lead for the Phillies, Romano suddenly looked like the closer the Phillies had been hoping for as he forced a ground ball, flyball and logged a strikeout to shut the door.

4/26/25 Phillies Boss Explains Controversial Decision to Move On From All-Star Reliever. The Philadelphia Phillies have struggled to create any sort of consistent momentum this season with a record of .500 headed into the weekend and coming off five consecutive losses. With a starting rotation which has of course been one of the best in baseball and a lineup that has underachieved but not been horrible, there is one main issue plauging Philadelphia more than anything else. The bullpen has been an absolute mess after the Phillies opted to replace two of their All-Star free agents with both external and internal options which have not panned out to this point. In terms of letting people walk, there is none more egregious looking right now than 2024 All-Star right-hander Jeff Hoffman.

4/25/25 Philadelphia Phillies Reliever 'Too Valuable To Close' Blowing Away Opponents. One of the issues that the Philadelphia Phillies have run into in the early going of the 2025 MLB regular season is with their bullpen. All-Star Jeff Hoffman and deadline acquisition Carlos Estevez both departed in free agency, signing with the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals, respectively. The only addition made to the backend of the bullpen was former Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano, who was non-tendered earlier in the winter. Orion Kerkering was elevated to the top right-handed option for Rob Thomson but has yet to replicate the production he showed in 2024.
