4/10/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - Kemp loses O's spot to Holliday yet sends young star classy message. What a guy. Tony Kemp was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday to make room for No. 1 prospect and infielder Jackson Holliday, and unlike most, the former Athletics utility man handled the news with absolute class. The nine-year MLB veteran held his head high and delivered a heart-warming message on X, formerly known as Twitter, passing the professional reigns to Holliday, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Instead of pouting over the loss of his job, Kemp shared a full-circle story about his time with the Vanderbilt Commodores and wished Holliday the best in his MLB career. If anyone has a reason to be upset, it’s Kemp. He only made five appearances during his Orioles tenure, and Baltimore’s transaction marks the second time Kemp has been DFA’d in the last month. Kemp previously was with the Cincinnati Reds and didn’t make an appearance before his time with them ended on March 20. Despite his struggles to stay in the show, Kemp has been classy. He was a fan favorite during his four years in Oakland, keeping fans entertained And when concluded in Feb., the 32-year-old shared a in a post on X. “… I never took a single day for granted,” Kemp said on Feb 27. While it’s tough for MLB fans to see Kemp lose his spot in Baltimore, he shares excitement with the baseball community who will follow Holliday as the 20-year-old’s big-league career takes off. In 10 games with Baltimore’s Triple-A Norfolk, Holliday had a slash line of .333/.482/.595 with five doubles, two home runs and nine RBI. Kemp now will try to latch on with another organization while Holliday starts at second base for a loaded Orioles team attempting to repeat as AL East champs. 2/25/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - How A's hope to fill leadership hole after Kemp's departure. On Friday, Tony Kemp signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds. After four seasons in Oakland, Kemp, a leader in the A’s clubhouse, leaves the team searching for leadership, In a recent article, shared how the A’s miss Kemp and plan to fill their leadership void. “Other longtime A’s players like Seth Brown and Paul Blackburn are most likely to step up and fill in the leadership gap left by Kemp,” wrote Smilow. “[Shea] Langeliers did say Brown also filled a similar role last year and that he is comfortable going to Brown for advice. [Mark] Kotsay agreed, saying Brown and Blackburn are crucial pieces when it comes to understanding where the team comes from, and lifting locker-room morale when the going gets tough.” Brown has played in Oakland since the 2019 MLB season. Even longer, Blackburn has been with the A’s since 2017. Langeliers added that replacing Kemp would be a hard task, considering the 32-year-old was a “I think everyone here misses TK,” Langeliers told Smilow. “He was just one of those guys that was there for you whether it was baseball or just life in general.” Smilow also listed Ross Stripling and Alex Wood as two veterans who can help mentor an Oakland team coming off a 50-112 campaign during the 2023 MLB season. The tandem of former San Francisco Giants moves across the Bay with a combined 114 wins, 108 losses and 19 years of experience. While recent history and future win-loss projections aren’t be the prettiest for the A’s, the team enters its 2024 MLB season with good vibes and energy. “We’re just excited,” Langeliers said. “Excited to be playing baseball again. It’s really easy to get to know everybody and we’re gonna be a close-knit group.” The A’s, figuring out where their next home will be, are focused on establishing a respectful, trustworthy locker room environment — a facet that Kemp handled for years. After joining the Oakland Athletics in 2020, Kemp finally got his first crack at free agency. The Reds have shown interest in Kemp throughout the offseason. Utilityman Tony Kemp agreed to a minor-league contract with the Cincinnati Reds with an invite to spring training, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Friday morning. Kemp spent the past four seasons with Oakland and was regarded as an important veteran leader in an increasingly young A’s clubhouse. After struggling mightily to begin the 2023 season, Kemp finished the campaign batting .209/.303/.304 with five home runs, 27 RBI and a career-high 15 stolen bases in 124 games with Oakland.
