5/22/25 | Willson Contreras' daring strategy shows he's literally willing to die on field. The St Louis Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in baseball. The Cardinals have gotten solid production from new first baseman Willson Contreras, who is a converted catcher. ESPN's Jeff Passan asked about his aggressive bunt defense and got great reactions from the St Louis players. “Contreras is in his first season as a first baseman, and even if the situation called for him to crash toward the plate — eighth inning, 1-0 lead, runners on first and second with no outs and Kansas City's Jonathan India squaring to bunt on the first two pitches — Contreras stationed himself 51 feet away, like a bunt scarecrow, as if to invite a swing from someone who routinely hits baseballs more than 100 mph,” Passan wrote. 5/22/25 | How defense has turned Cardinals into contenders -- and set up a trade deadline dilemma. IN CREPT WILLSON CONTRERAS, closer and closer to home plate, to the point that it started alarming his St. Louis Cardinals teammates. Contreras is in his first season as a first baseman, and even if the situation called for him to crash toward the plate -- eighth inning, 1-0 lead, runners on first and second with no outs and Kansas City's Jonathan India squaring to bunt on the first two pitches -- Contreras stationed himself 51 feet away, like a bunt scarecrow, as if to invite a swing from someone who routinely hits baseballs more than 100 mph. "Scoot back a little," Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado hollered across the diamond. Cardinals coaches urged Contreras to do the same. 5/21/25 | Cardinals get the win 11-4 over MLB-leading Tigers. The Cardinals rolled out a new-look lineup on Monday night and they didn't have to wait long to see how effective it could be. In the fifth inning of the game against the Tigers at Busch Stadium, new cleanup hitter Willson Contreras came up with the bases loaded, set to be followed by Ivan Herrera and Nolan Arenado, dropped from fourth to sixth in the batting order. The three runs increased the Cardinals' lead from 2-0 to 5-0 and they went to get the win in the opener of the three-game series. Source: https://www.ksdk.com/article/sports/mlb/stl-cardin... |
5/14/25 | Cardinals MVP Starting To Become Clear Thanks To Hot Streak. The St. Louis Cardinals are the hottest team in baseball right now and it's not a coincidence that one of their most important hitters has recently turned things around. It was a slow start to the season for catcher-turned-first-baseman Willson Contreras, but that isn't the case any longer. Through 18 games, Contreras was slashing .139/.195/.222 with one homer and seven RBIs. It's been a tale of two seasons for Contreras so far and he's clearly a big reason why the Caridnals are riding a nine-game winning streak right now. 5/06/25 | Contreras homer sparks Cardinals over Pirates 6-3. Willson Contreras hit a go-ahead home run in a four-run sixth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 on Monday night for their third straight victory. Contreras' fifth home run came off Pirates reliever Chase Shugart, who walked Nolan Arenado after coming in with the bases empty, one out and a 3-2 lead. Jose Barrero, who hit his first homer as a Cardinal earlier, added a bases-loaded ground-rule double off Shugart for a 6-3 lead. Source: https://krcgtv.com/sports/content/contreras-homer-... |
