Cubs quietly shut down top pitching prospect amid rising trade chatter Prospect shutdown adds fuel to looming trade mystery By Jordan Campbell | Share on Facebook Share on X Copy Article Vanderbilt v Arkansas | Wesley Hitt/GettyImages Share on Facebook Share on X Share on Reddit Copy Article Within the last week, the Chicago Cubs were rumored to be pushing two separate trades across the finish line. Between Kansas City Royals' veteran Seth Lugo and Mitch Keller of the Pittsburgh Pirates , it seems clear that the Cubs are trying to make an early addition to their starting rotation. As those trade talks were rumored to be happening, the Cubs may have quietly been preparing one of their top prospects

6/28/25 Cardinals linked to $30 million Royals All-Star in recent trade rumor. The St. Louis Cardinals have outperformed their expectations this year. Nick Selbe of Sports Illustrated listed Kansas City Royals right-hander Seth Lugo as a trade candidate and had St. Louis as a possible fit.

6/28/25 Cardinals Among 'Best Fits' For Royals All-Star, Per MLB Writers. The St. Louis Cardinals might be in the buying business before the trade deadline. Battling in a crowded National League Wild Card race, the Cardinals could gain some separation by strengthening their starting rotation, a critical component for any team aiming to play in October. Recent speculation links St. Louis to a veteran All-Star pitcher who could provide stability. According to Sports Illustrated's Nick Selbe and Will Laws, Kansas City Royals starter Seth Lugo would fit well on the Cardinals.

6/27/25 Dodgers Could Poach $45 Million Royals All-Star At Deadline, Per Insider. The 2025 trade deadline is beginning to loom as a day of reckoning for the Kansas City Royals. The Royals entered this season with clear plans to buy, as they made the playoffs in 2024, but their mediocre season is currently taking a nosedive. Mired in a five-game losing streak in which they haven't scored since Tuesday, the Royals are now 38-43. The futures of several Royals players are up in the air, none more so than starting pitcher Seth Lugo.

6/24/25 Chicago Cubs Linked To 2024 Cy Young Runner-Up On Trade Market. A rough stretch by the Kansas City Royals could wind up benefitting the Chicago Cubs' pursuit of their first playoff appearance since 2020. The Royals lost two of three games over the weekend to the Padres, part of a 6-11 stretch since June 5. CBS Sports gives the Royals less than a 1% chance to win the division and just a 6.2% chance to reach the postseason. On Tuesday, ESPN's Jeff Passan listed right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo as a potential trade candidate.

6/24/25 Royals Could Cut Ties With $45 Million All-Star: Dodgers, 4 Others Named As Fits. The Kansas City Royals seem to be taking a hard stance against selling at the trade deadline. In fairness, it's probably still too early for the Royals to commit to a pathway at the Jul. 31 deadline. The reporter behind that piece of scuttlebutt, Mark Healey of the Rockaway Wave, also speculated that starting pitcher Seth Lugo could be a great fit for the Mets. Lugo is in year two of his three-year, $45 million deal with the Royals, but he can opt out in advance of the 2026 season.

6/23/25 Rangers Mock Blockbuster Sends Adolis García To Royals In 1-For-1 Swap. The Kansas City Royals need to cast a wide net at the trade deadline to have any hopes of landing the middle-of-the-order slugger they've now been missing for two years. Small-market teams typically get shorter title windows, and the Royals might not have any more seasons with their starting pitching core of Seth Lugo, Cole Ragans, and Kris Bubic intact. Jeremy Greco of Royals Review recently proposed one interesting target with tremendous postseason success to boot: Adolis García of the Texas Rangers.

6/23/25 Giants Could Cut Ties With $9 Million Veteran In Trade To Royals, Per Insider. For the Kansas City Royals, the time is now for a playoff push to take shape. Though the offense has been positively brutal all season, the Royals are still right in the thick of the Wild Card hunt. At 38-40, they're two games behind the Cleveland Guardians and Seattle Mariners for the third and final spot. Though most teams with Kansas City's record would be caught in a middle ground between buying and selling, the Royals seem to recognize that they have a brief title window. Starting pitcher Seth Lugo will be a free agent at the end of the year; Kris Bubic the year after that. So to beef up the offense, one baseball insider suggests a rental slugger from the San Francisco Giants might be attainable.

6/19/25 MLB Insider Predicts Royals' Odds Of Selling At 2025 Trade Deadline. Don't give up on the Kansas City Royals just yet. While a rough June has seen the Royals dip below .500, they don't believe they're anywhere near exiting the playoff race. Taking the first two games of their series against their fellow Wild Card-contending Texas Rangers was a huge first step after a dismal week beforehand. The Royals don't want to sell at the trade deadline, because they believe they have a relatively short title window with Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans at the top of the rotation.

6/18/25 Kansas City Royals Legend Passes Hall of Famer George Brett in Team History. The Kansas City Royals routed the Texas Rangers 6-1 on Tuesday night in a battle of wild card hopefuls. Seth Lugo threw six innings of one-run ball to earn the win, and Salvador Perez provided the offense, going 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs. The big night gave Perez eight homers for the season and also broke a tie with Hall of Famer George Brett in team history. 6/17/25 Mets-Royals Seth Lugo Trade Rumor Brutally Shot Down By KC Spokesperson. The Kansas City Royals are going to be subject to some loud trade chatter over the next few weeks, especially if they continue playing this poorly. As they've lost six games in a row, the Royals have fallen to three games outside the playoff picture entering Tuesday. Meanwhile, if the Royals are trending downward, they'd have some huge pieces to sell at the trade deadline, especially starting pitcher Seth Lugo. On Tuesday, Mark Healey of the Rockaway Wave reported on X (formerly Twitter) that he had heard the Royals were shopping Lugo, and urged the New York Mets to make a push for the crafty right-hander.

6/10/25 Royals-Rockies Blockbuster Trade Idea Brings $70 Million All-Star To KC. The Kansas City Royals will be one of the teams facing the most pressure at the 2025 trade deadline. After making the playoffs in 2024, the Royals are hoping for a return trip this season. The Royals also have real free agents hitting the market this winter, headlined by starting pitcher Seth Lugo. Royals Review's Matt Chabot believes Kansas City could even pull off a trade for Colorado Rockies All-Star third baseman Ryan McMahon, who would be a luxury purchase for Kansas City with his $70 million contract that runs through 2027.

6/03/25 Royals Patience In Lefty Starter Kris Bubic Finally Paying Off. Sure, they made the playoffs last season, but their rotation was fronted by Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha, a pair of preseason free agency adds, and Cole Ragans, acquired via trade from the Texas Rangers the previous July at the deadline. This year, after a long wait, the Royals have a new ace, and he is in fact a Kansas City draftee. Lefty Kris Bubic was the 40th overall pick in the 2018 draft, and finally seems to be putting it all together at the major league level.

5/30/25 Former 33-home run slugger lands in free agency after Royals release. The Kansas City Royals have made a few moves ahead of their divisional battle against the Detroit Tigers. Fresh after reinstating starter Seth Lugo from the IL, former Royals outfielder Hunter Renfroe has hit free agency after he went unclaimed on the waiver wire. Renfroe has played for a few different teams in his nine-year MLB career.
