5/23/25 Raiders Make Up for Mistakes in 2008 Redraft. The Las Vegas Raiders have now had back-to-back years where they draft good and set themselves up for success. This consistency of making the most of their draft picks is something that's only happened recently, as the Raiders have a history of whiffing on their picks. The cornerstone of their defense, Maxx Crosby, was drafted in the fourth round, but he's an outlier in recent history for Raider Nation. One of the biggest draft busts of all time, not exclusive to the Raiders, was their taking JaMarcus Russell first overall in 2007.

5/03/25 ESPN predicts Raiders to pass on QB of future once again in early 2026 mock draft. The Las Vegas Raiders have needed a franchise player under center for nearly two decades. Ever since whiffing on LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the organization has steered clear of first-round signal-callers. Smith is already 34 years old, though, so he cannot play forever. Las Vegas needs a legitimate succession plan, and while they may not have found one this year, the expectation is that they'll target one next offseason.

4/19/25 Raiders inching closer to major QB decision in NFL Draft. The Las Vegas Raiders have not drafted a quarterback in the first round since 2007 when they infamously selected JaMarcus Russell. The LSU product became one of the biggest busts in NFL history, and the organization has been scared to swing and miss again. In the nearly two decades since that decision, the franchise has boasted Derek Carr, a second-round pick, and a slew of unimpressive stop-gap quarterbacks under center. Many have argued this offseason that, no matter what, the team should draft a quarterback with the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft.
