Here are some notes and observations from Friday's rookie minicamp practice, the first of the three-day event and the only session open to the media. With coach Dan Campbell not in the building to attend to a personal matter, coordinators Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson had to navigate the balance of being demanding and patient, with a large number of alignment and assignment errors occasionally pushing both past their tipping points. Leading those struggles was tryout quarterback Theo Day, out of Northern Iowa, who bobbled at least three snaps, including back-to-back snaps from undrafted center Kingsley Eguakun. There's not much better in sports than when a team, in a subsequent matchup with the squad that knocked it out of the playoffs, beats that group of players the following season. The Lions would have a chance to garner at least a small degree of revenge by beating the San Francisco 49ers in their rematch with the reigning NFC champions this upcoming season. Detroit is projected to return to Levi's Stadium, the site of the organization's devastating NFC Championship Game loss, to square off with the 49ers during the 2024 regular season. The matchup will surely bring back memories of the second-half collapse – the Lions held a 17-point lead going into halftime – and strong feelings of disappointment and regret for Dan Campbell and his squad. Lions general manager Brad Holmes began wearing “VILLAIN” shirts in the last year, a subtle jab at the naysayers and disbelievers of the rebuild in Detroit. In fact, everyone else did too, including owner Sheila Hamp, head coach Dan Campbell and team president Rod Wood. Holmes took criticism for taking a running back (Jahmyr Gibbs) and stand-up linebacker (Jack Campbell) in the first 18 picks of last year's draft.
