Anyone questioning how important it is that the Green Bay Packers have a reliable veteran kicker have clearly forgotten what life was like before Brandon McManus' midseason arrival last year. Whether it was Anders Carlson punctuating his rollercoaster rookie season in 2023 with a critical fourth-quarter miss on a 41-yard attempt with the Packers leading the San Francisco 49ers in their NFC divisional round playoff matchup, or waiver-wire claim Brayden Narveson leading the NFL in missed field-goal attempts during the first 1/3 of last season, the kicking game was frustratingly unpredictable before McManus was signed in mid-October. The Green Bay Packers head coach had just put a wrap on the team' offseason program with the third and final mandatory minicamp practice on Thursday morning. The session had ended early when kicker Brandon McManus drilled a 58-yard field goal, the outcome of which was to decide whether practice would end 30 minutes earlier than scheduled, or continue until the final horn. Thirteen summers in, Brandon McManus still feels the same giddiness he once did as a young kicker trying to win one of the NFL's 32 jobs. Now 33 years old, McManus is a former Super Bowl champion, veteran of 172 regular-season games and the most experienced player in the Packers' locker room.
