9/13/24 Surprise Cubs flamethrower called 'hidden gem' amid breakout season. The Chicago Cubs struggled all season to find an effective closer, and it may have cost them their playoff chances. Early on, 2023 incumbent Adbert Alzolay struggled mightily before losing the closer title. Hector Neris stepped in and did a decent job at times, but eventually got dumped so the Cubs could save some money. Overall, the Cubs have blown 21 saves this season, and as of Friday, they're five games out of playoff position.

8/15/24 Cubs predicted to land All-Star left-handed reliever in free agency. The Chicago Cubs are one of the most disappointing teams in Major League Baseball this season. Entering play Thursday, the Cubs sit at 59-63. ESPN's projections currently give them a 3.2% shot at the playoffs. After Adbert Alzolay stabilized the closer role in 2023, the Cubs have had no one who can consistently get the last three outs in 2024.

8/07/24 Cubs' Adbert Alzolay Needs Tommy John Surgery. The Chicago Cubs were dealt some brutal injury news on one of their key relief pitchers, Adbert Alzolay. The 29-year-old righty has to undergo Tommy John surgery, ending his 2024 season in the midst of a months-long injury rehab. The Cubs knew that he would need surgery but the latest steps were to determine the severity of his injury. Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic noted that Alzolay does not yet have an exact timeline for his return but his rehab will obviously eat into next season.

8/02/24 Cubs pitcher dealt devastating injury update. The Chicago Cubs were dealt some brutal news on Thursday regarding a bullpen pitcher. Adbert Alzolay has been placed on the 60-day injured list with a right flexor strain. Alzolay was struggling before the injury, holding a 4.67 ERA in just 17.1 innings pitched. Alzolay was slated for a big role in the Cubs bullpen before the injury.

8/01/24 Cubs' Adbert Alzolay to have right forearm surgery. Chicago Cubs right-hander Adbert Alzolay will need surgery on his injured right forearm, manager Craig Counsell said Thursday. "He's seeking second opinions just to determine exactly what and where he's going to have surgery," Counsell said. The 29-year-old Alzolay had 22 saves in 25 chances in 2023, but none after Aug. 29, when his forearm problem first appeared to surface.

7/21/24 The recovery of these two Chicago Cubs pitchers will be key in second half. With it looking more and more likely that the Chicago Cubs will be sellers at the Major League Baseball Trade Deadline, the Cubs would be wise to use the rest of the 2024 season as a way to map out the certainties and question marks on the roster heading into the offseason. Specifically, the Cubs have to determine the path forward for their starting rotation and bullpen. Adbert Alzolay and Ben Brown are two pitchers who will be key in planning the pitching staff for next season. Where the Cubs erred with Alzolay is using a two-month stretch during the 2023 season as validation that he was the unquestioned closer heading into the 2024 season.

6/02/24 Chicago Cubs Transfer Closer to 60-Day IL Amid Other Roster Moves. It has certainly been a busy season for the Chicago Cubs' coaching staff and front office as they've had to navigate multiple roster moves that have come from injuries and poor play this year. Whether that ultimately happens or not will be seen as the Cubs continue to shuffle things around. Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network gave some updates about what the most recent moves were as Chicago officially shifted their closer Adbert Alzolay to the 60-day injured list after his forearm strain continued to get worse. In a corresponding move, the Cubs are also calling up David Bote to make his first Major League appearance since 2022 after he was recovering from shoulder surgery.

5/28/24 Chicago Cubs 'Eager' to Return Reliever With Impressive Career. The recent stretch for the Chicago Cubs isn't ideal, but it's also not the worst thing to happen. With the struggles on both ends of the baseball, the front office has a clear view of what they need to do at the trade deadline to better this roster. Having a loaded farm system, the Cubs are in an excellent position to get better. Looking at one player Chicago is "eager" to get back, Theo DeRosa of MLB.com named Adbert Alzolay.

5/22/24 Cubs pitcher Adbert Alzolay reportedly shut down amid injury rehab. Chicago Cubs pitcher Adbert Alzolay got a second opinion on the arm injury that has kept him out of action in recent weeks, and the prognosis wasn’t great, according to manager Craig Counsell.

5/13/24 Cubs place reliever Adbert Alzolay on injured list with right forearm strain and recall José Cuas. Right-hander Adbert Alzolay, who opened the season as the Chicago Cubs' closer, was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday with a right forearm strain. Right-hander José Cuas was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Héctor Neris, who has six saves in seven chances, has moved into the closer's role though Alzolay earned the save in the Cubs' 5-4 win in 10 innings at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

5/09/24 Chicago Cubs Proposed Pitch Lands Closer From Biggest Rival. Despite the encouraging start for the Chicago Cubs, sitting at 22-16, there are areas the front office will need to address before the deadline. Perhaps even a team in the National League Central could help them out if the deal makes sense for both sides. If there's been one concerning issue on the Cubs roster nearly 40 games into the season, it's been in the bullpen. Closer Adbert Alzolay was one of the top pitchers on Chicago's relief staff last season, finishing with 22 saves, a 2.67 ERA, and a WHIP of 1.02.

5/06/24 Brewers Use Discretion with Stolen Bases. Baserunning was one of the major differences in the Brewers' lone win over the Cubs in their weekend series, and it certainly wasn't the first time this season where they have used their team speed to push the envelope in a close game. The Brewers trailed 1-0 in the top of the eighth inning when four consecutive batters singled, then stole second base off Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay and catcher Miguel Amaya. The group that did it included noted speedster Jackson Chourio, but also a pair of below average runners in Jake Bauers (who Baseball Savant has in the 12th percentile for baserunning value) and William Contreras (first percentile).

Author: Brad Wakai May 04, 2024 In this story: Chicago Cubs MLB Adbert Alzolay After a crazy final series on the road where the Chicago Cubs were fortunate to escape with a split, they were ready to get back to Wrigley Field and play in front of their home fans where they hold a 10-4 record. Their offense has been much more prolific at home as well, something they desperately needed after scoring only 3.86 runs per game in their seven contests on the road. 4/20/24 Column: Chicago Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay suffers his 4th blown save in 7 chances in a 3-2 loss to the Miami Marlins. It looked so simple from afar. Craig Counsell would hand the ball to his closer in Milwaukee, and the Brewers would walk away with a win. But the easiest decision Counsell had to make on a daily basis in his nine years in Milwaukee already has become one of the most difficult ones in his first month of managing the Chicago Cubs. After Bryan De La Cruz’s two-run home run off Adbert Alzolay on a ...

4/14/24 Adbert Alzolay’s pickoff caps Chicago Cubs’ series win in Seattle behind another solid start by Javier Assad. SEATTLE — Chicago Cubs closer Adbert Alzolay was confident the replay review would vindicate him. Alzolay’s perfectly-timed pickoff move with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday caught Seattle Mariners pinch runner Julio Rodríguez, aided by first baseman Michael Busch’s well-timed tag. The on-field call by first base umpire Doug Eddings determined Rodríguez was safe, though ...

4/09/24 Chicago Cubs bullpen comes into question after devastating loss. It's a new season but the same concern for the Chicago Cubs as their bullpen continues to come into question. The bullpen imploded during the team's loss to the San Diego Padres on Monday but it was the way that the loss occurred that has many Cubs fans worried as they wake up today. The Cubs jumped out to 8-0 lead over the Padres on Monday before San Diego scored 9 unanswered points, culminating in a go-ahead two-run home run by Fernando Tatis Jr off Cubs' closer Adbert Alzolay in the bottom of the 8th inning.

3/22/24 Cubs' Adbert Alzolay connects the clubhouse, organization with 'true leadership qualities'. Cubs reliever Adbert Alzolay walked into the clubhouse and spotted lefty starter Shota Imanaga at his locker, brow furrowed, in an interview. Alzolay strode over and patted Imanaga on the chest. It was the day after Imanaga's first spring training start, a solid showing against the Dodgers at Camelback Ranch. “When I first joined, he was the guy who helped me out,” Imanga told the Sun-Times through interpreter Edwin Stanberry.
