4/16/24 Luke Raley starting to find his way, and his role, in first season with Mariners. In a sit-down conversation with Scott Servais the other day, Luke Raley got the clarity he was looking for, and some honest feedback from the Mariners manager. “Having that conversation and seeing things through his eyes, knowing what your role is on this team — the transparency is great,” Raley said. Smooth start, it was not, for Raley in his first weeks with the Mariners. Raley can do a little bit of everything, and that's why the Mariners acquired him in a trade with the Rays in January.

1/14/24 What They Said: Seattle Mariners OF Luke Raley on role and more. Luke Raley was hardly thinking about changing teams when he learned he had been traded to the Seattle Mariners. The 29-year-old outfielder and first baseman recently got married, and he was on the final day of his honeymoon playing pool volleyball when the Tampa Bay Rays dealt him to Seattle. “I get out of the pool to like 10 missed calls and a bunch of text messages,” Raley said on Tuesday's Mariners Hot Stove on Seattle Sports. The newest Mariners slugger spoke at length to M's broadcasters Aaron Goldsmith and Gary Hill about joining his new team, noting that he's already been in contact with two of the team's main coaches.

1/05/24 Rays acquire INF José Caballero from Mariners for OF Luke Raley. The Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle Mariners are completing a trade that will trade 29-year old, power hitting fifth outfielder Luke Raley for a desperately needed potential answer at shortstop for 2024 in 28-year old infielder Jose Caballero. Known for his speed and decision making on the basepaths, Caballero is a plus defender (with high marks from both DRS and OAA) who covered 21 games at shortstop for the Mariners in his rookie season, while getting the lions share of opportunities at second base across his 104 games played. The acquisition of Caballero should take pressure off the Rays to force Basabe into the majors to start the season, and could even lead to an open competition for shortstop alongside Taylor Walls — depending on his recovery timeline from offseason hip surgery — and prospect Osleivis Basabe, who finished 2023 as the team's primary 6.
