The Cardinals selected Baker, then playing at TCU, with the 75th overall pick in the 2018 draft. He was the 2015 Gatorade National Player of the Year at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas. 8/25/21 Barrera's three hits help Nationals extend Marlins' skid.

MIAMI (AP) —

Tres Barrera had three hits, including a homer, and the Washington Nationals beat the reeling Miami Marlins 5-1 on Tuesday night.

Yadiel Hernádez singled and tripled, while Ryan Zimmerman also went deep for the Nationals.

Erick Fedde (6-8) struck out a career-high 10 in 6 1/3 innings. He allowed one run, six hits and walked one. The Marlins struck out 15 times against Washington pitchers and have lost eight straight.

“My last bullpen, coming into this I was really locked in, one of my better ones of the year,” Fedde said; “Probably once I got through the second, third inning, I really felt comfortable with my stuff.”

The Nationals broke a scoreless tie in a three-run fourth against Miami starter Jesús Luzardo (4-7). Hernández hit a one-out triple and scored on Barrera’s two-run shot. Luis García followed Hernández’s blast with a double and raced home on Lane Thomas’ two-out RBI single.

“We had to make (Luzardo) throw strikes,” Barrera said. “We were patient and got in good counts and got good pitches to hit.”

Miami had a chance to cut into Washington’s advantage in the bottom half after Jesús Sánchez reached on a leadoff infield single and Brian Anderson followed with a double. But Sánchez overran third and was thrown out on second baseman Garcia’s relay toss. Fedde then struck out Jorge Alfaro and Bryan De La Cruz.

“I don’t feel like we’re pressing, I really don’t feel any sense of that,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said. “You keep coming in here with the expectation to win, preparing to win. We as a staff will continue to work.”

After striking out in his first two at bats against Luzardo, Zimmerman increased Washington’s lead with a two-run shot in the fifth. Zimmerman drove Luzardo’s changeup into the...

7/25/20 Nationals catcher Tres Barrera banned 80 games for drug test.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals catcher Tres Barrera was suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball on Saturday after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

MLB said Barrera, a 25-year-old who made his major league debut last September, tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Dehydrochlormethyltestosterone or DHCMT, the chemical compound used in a drug that fueled Olympic athletes in the former East Germany decades ago.

Berrera’s suspension is another element in a turbulent opening to Washington’s defense of its 2019 World Series championship.

Hours before the Nationals lost their rain-shortened opener of the pandemic-delayed season to the New York Yankees 4-1 on Thursday night, star slugger Juan Soto was put on the COVID-19 injured list because he tested positive for the coronavirus.

Barrera said Saturday that he appealed his suspension but it was upheld by an arbitrator.

“From the initial failed drug test to losing the appeal, this all has come as a complete surprise as I have never, and will never knowingly use a banned substance,” he said in a statement released by the players’ association.

“I have worked too hard and given too much to this sport to disrespect or cheat the game that I love. I would never do anything to dishonor my family, teammates, and coaches or do anything to let down the many young ball players that look up to me.”

Barrera was on Washington's 40-man roster and part of its 60-man player pool.

He appeared in two games in 2019 and was not a member of the postseason roster as the Nationals went on to win the franchise's first title.

Barrera was taken by the Nationals in the sixth round of the 2016 amateur draft out of the University of Texas.
