7/05/25 Padres Insider Doesn't Like San Diego's Chances of Retaining Michael King Long Term. The Athletic's Dennis Lin believes the San Diego Padres may have trouble keeping starting pitcher Michael King after he enters free agency following the 2025 season. The right-hander has a $15 million mutual option for the 2026 season in his contract, however he is likely to decline considering his performances this season and the amount he would likely fetch in free agency. Spotrac believes King is worth a four-year, $71 million contract.

6/24/25 Former Yankees Pitcher Very Confident He'll Return This Season. What a difference a year makes, especially for the former New York Yankees pitcher. Last June, Michael King was enjoying a breakout season with the San Diego Padres, establishing himself as a middle-of-the-rotation starter with high upside. Fast forward 12 months and King is just hoping to get back on the mound before the 2025 season ends. King, who the New York Yankees sent to the Padres in December 2023 as part of the blockbuster deal for All-Star slugger Juan Soto, is rehabbing his way back after being diagnosed with a thoracic nerve problem in his right shoulder which landed him on the injured list last month.

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King remains adamant that he will pitch again for the Friars this season despite his extended stay on the injured list with a nerve issue. The Padres scratched King from a May 24 start against the Atlanta Braves and placed him on the injured list the following day. King hasn't resumed baseball activities since, and per the San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee, they will need to wait for his nerve to start firing again before that happens. “I've had days where I've been really, really frustrated with it and been really sore and felt like I didn't get much activity that day," King said.

6/13/25 Padres Insider Provides Unfortunate Timeline on Michael King Return. The San Diego Padres have now spent three weeks without Michael King, and according to The Athletic's Dennis Lin, they may need to gear up for another month without their Opening Day Starter. According to Lin, sports neurologist Dr. Ilan Danan — who is yet to examine or treat King —hypothesized the right-hander's symptoms may stem from a herniated disc in his neck, which would not be uncommon for a baseball player. "No matter what is ailing King, a return before the All-Star break has become increasingly unlikely," said Lin. The Padres scratched King from his start against the Atlanta Braves May 24 before putting him on the 15-day injured list the following day.
