6/19/25 Astros' Joe Espada reveals big Cristian Javier update before Athletics game. As the Houston Astros (43-31) gain more separation in the American League West — led the Seattle Mariners by five and a half games entering Thursday night's matchup versus the Athletics, it is becoming easier to overlook their depleted pitching staff. And that cannot happen. Although Joe Espada's club continues to excel with more than half a dozen hurlers on the injured list, sustaining success in this state is hard to fathom. Reinforcements are essential. Fortunately, one player just made critical progress. Astros right-handed pitcher Cristian Javier, who underwent Tommy John surgery last June, threw in his first live batting practice , according to the Houston Chronicle's Matt Kawahara. He

6/18/25 Astros Should Target Key Starting Pitcher in Possible Trade With Pirates. The Houston Astros just simply can not catch a break when it comes to the health of their starting pitch. Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier and J.P. France started the season on the injured list and remain there. To make matters worse, just as Lance McCullers Jr. was beginning to look like his old self, he's gone back on the IL with a foot injury. Hunter Brown is in the midst of one of the best seasons that's been seen from a starter in years, and Framber Valdez is his usual consistently great self.

6/17/25 Rumored Houston Astros Target Now Expected to be Top Trade Candidate. Ultimately, all reports are just rumors with nearly two months still left ahead of the MLB trade deadline. One thing that's solidifying is the status of buyers and sellers, and the Houston Astros are expected to fall in the latter category after turning around their 2025 campaign to lead the AL West. The Astros must add to their starting rotation if they would rather not waste this hot streak. Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, and JP France all began the season on the injured list and have since been joined by Spencer Arrighetti and Ronel Blanco.

6/13/25 Should Houston Astros Bolster Rotation with Disgruntled Brewers Starter?. The injuries continue to pile up for the Houston Astros in the starting rotation. The season began with Cristian Javier, Luis Garcaia and JP France on the injured list. Since then, Spencer Arrighetti, Ronel Blanco and Hayden Wesneski have joined them. Elite performances from co-aces Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez have kept the unit afloat, as has strong play from Lance McCullers Jr. as he's returned from his own injuries.

6/09/25 Could Houston Astros Acquire Ace Pitcher From Archrival at MLB Trade Deadline?. The Houston Astros have been hit with a ridiculous barrage of injuries to their starting pitchers. Between Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, Spencer Arrighetti, Ronel Blanco, J.P. France and Hayden Wesneski, the Astros have an entire viable Major League starting rotation plus one extra good arm on the injured list.

5/29/25 Astros Top Pitching Prospect Has Bounced Back in Major Way After Slow Start. It has been all hands on deck for the Houston Astros when it comes to their pitching staff during the 2025 MLB season. The team is still awaiting the return of Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia and J.P. France, who were all injured coming into the year. During the regular season, the Astros lost Spencer Arrighetti to a freak accident during pre-game batting practice when a ball hit him and fractured his hand. Hayden Wesneski, who was acquired as part of the trade package from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right fielder Kyle Tucker, is done for the year, having to undergo Tommy John surgery.

5/27/25 Could Emergence of Hunter Brown Prevent Astros From Adding Trade Deadline Pitchers?. The Houston Astros have had a full rotation's worth of starting pitchers go down in the last few years, and it's pushed the team's depth to points very few have. Cristian Javier, J.P. France, Luis Garcia, Hayden Wesneski and Spencer Arrighetti are all currently on the injured list. Ryan Gusto and Colton Gordon were not names Astros fans thought would be core parts of the rotation going into June.

2/02/25 Should Houston Astros Pursue World Series-Winning Starting Pitcher?. As the Houston Astros prepare for the 2025 season, the disappointment of failing to reach the ALCS for the first time since 2016 is lingering over the organization's head. The team's pitching staff was completely ravaged by injuries last year, as Cristian Javier, Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers Jr, Luis Garcia and Jose Urquidy all missed significant time with various ailments. Javier, Garcia and McCullers are candidates to return to the mound at some point in 2025, but the team still has some glaring holes in terms of its pitching staff.

12/03/24 These Are the Four Worst Houston Astros Contracts on Next Season's Payroll. The Houston Astros have been the most recent dynasty in MLB, a run that started in 2017 and has yet to come to an end. As the run grows longer, the chance of bad contracts begins to increase with aging stars who helped lead the charge beginning to decline and underperforming players on the edges impacting the success and failure of a team. The Astros have not been immune to that, and these are the four worst contracts currently on the club's payroll for 2025. Cristian Javier took the world by storm with what he was able to do on the mound for Houston, a team that prides itself in their pitching.

7/30/24 Jose Urquidy and Cristian Javier both had Tommy John surgery. The Houston Astros were dealt a crushing blow to their pitching rotation in the early portion of the summer, as the team announced starting pitchers Cristian Javier and Jose Urquidy were both ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season. Urquidy returned to Houston early during Spring Training with complaints of “forearm stiffness.” Javier made seven starts for the 'Stros in the 2024 season, but had been out since May 27, also citing forearm discomfort. Despite losing Urquidy and Brown along with starting the season with a dismal 7-19 record, the Astros have bounced back and captured first place in the competitive AL West with a 55-51 record.

6/03/24 Houston Astros Star Could Undergo Second Season-Ending Surgery. It's been a tough season for the Houston Astros and their starting pitchers. Then, Cristian Javier and Framber Valdez both were placed on the IL at different points in the season. Luis Garcia and Lance McCullers Jr. are already occupying spots on the injured list and aren't expected back until around the All-Star break, so these issues forced the Astros to rely on unproven arms, something that turned into a disaster.
