6/29/25 Catcher Carlos Narváez continues to contribute as bright spot during dark days for Red Sox. After breaking spring training as the backup to Connor Wong, Narváez overtook the starting catcher role after Wong broke his finger on April 7. Narváez has run with the opportunity, producing a .272 average and .793 OPS — the fifth highest on the team. Behind the plate, Narváez is tied for the league lead in runners caught stealing (17) and runners picked off (3), and advanced metrics grade him as one of the league's top catchers in both pitch framing and blocks.

6/26/25 How Connor Wong has adjusted to Red Sox backup role in 'different' season than he expected. Connor Wong entered the regular season expecting to be the Red Sox' primary catcher once again after starting 105 games behind the plate in 2023 and 99 last year. Wong, who momentarily emerged as an All-Star candidate a year ago with a strong first half and seemed poised to take a leap this season after a winter in which he focused on defensive work, has not had the 2025 he envisioned. In the time since, Wong has seen his playing time — and role with the Red Sox dwindle significantly. After years of speculation about when prospect Kyle Teel would eventually overtake Wong, the Red Sox seemed to give Wong a vote of confidence when they traded Teel to Chicago in the Garrett Crochet deal last December.

6/23/25 Angels score early and late with help from Red Sox. The Angels took advantage of the Boston Red Sox again. An eighth-inning throwing error from catcher Connor Wong set up the go-ahead run in the Angels' 9-5 victory over the Red Sox on Monday night. The Angels scored their other five runs in a first inning in which Boston starter Walker Buehler walked four batters and hit two. The Angels also got out of a jam because of some questionable Red Sox baserunning.

6/19/25 Red Sox Could Snag New Backup Catcher From Dodgers In Crucial Trade. Are the Boston Red Sox overworking Carlos Narváez? Boston might need to bring in another catcher before the deadline to spell Narváez, especially given the Connor Wong situation. Despite Wong's defensive improvements, his offensive struggles this season (when healthy) have weighed heavily on the lineup. The door could be open for a new backup catcher.

6/11/25 Insane Stat Shows Just How Effective Red Sox Rookie Has Been This Season. Boston's catching duo has become the most quietly elite part of the roster, and there's a good chance they haven't come close to their ceiling. For all the chatter surrounding the Red Sox's youth movement and lineup reshuffling, the club's work behind the plate remains one of its most underrated strengths. Connor Wong has returned from an early season finger injury and has struggled mightily in limited appearances after a really strong 2024 campaign. In fact, Boston's catcher tandem is among the league's Top 10 in WAR, per Thomas Nestico on X.

5/26/25 Red Sox veteran's frustrated response after Memorial Day loss. The Boston Red Sox are on the wrong side of .500 with June right around the corner. On Memorial Day, the Red Sox dropped their third straight game, this time in a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on the road. The Red Sox lost three in a row and four in a row earlier in May, so this is yet another losing streak for a team that had promise entering the season. The Red Sox scored a run in the top of the ninth and had the tying run at third, but Connor Wong hit a flyout to end the game.

5/20/25 Yankees Accidentally Gifted Red Sox Breakout Star. The Boston Red Sox entered this past offseason with some questions at the catcher position. In 2024, the Red Sox rolled out a tandem of Connor Wong and Reese McGuire for the most part. The Red Sox also acquired Danny Jansen. Neither Jansen nor McGuire are in the organization any longer.

5/15/25 Red Sox Must Make This Change To Lineup After 28-Year-Old's Latest Blunder. Major League Baseball lineups don't have to be set in stone, but it helps to define roles when possible. Right now, the Boston Red Sox need to define two players' roles. Coming into the season, the Red Sox had a clear starting catcher in Connor Wong, and a clear backup in Carlos Narváez. Wong struggled to begin the year, got hurt in mid-April, then came back in early May and is struggling again.

4/29/25 'No guarantee' Boston Red Sox catcher will be activated for during Toronto series. Catcher Connor Wong (fractured pinky) is playing in his second rehab game for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. 4/28/25 Carlos Narváez, the Red Sox' backup plan at catcher, has been working out fine since an injury to starter Connor Wong. Then they did it again a year later when the Yankees sent 26-year-old catcher Carlos Narváez to the Sox for a minor league pitcher. Verdugo helped the Yankees get to the World Series last season. Now there's a chance Narváez could do the same for the Red Sox. Narváez has started 15 of the last 19 games since Connor Wong went on the injured list April 8 with a broken finger.

4/24/25 Red Sox 'Likely' To Take Step Toward Full Strength This Weekend. The Boston Red Sox aren't at full strength right now but they could start to take a step in the right direction this weekend. Red Sox catcher Connor Wong has been out since suffering a fracture in the pinky area of his left hand on April 7th against the Toronto Blue Jays. Boston has stayed above water since then with Carlos Narváez and Blake Sabol as the team's two catchers. While this is the case, Wong is “likely” to begin a rehab assignment this weekend, according to The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

4/23/25 Red Sox could turn to recently DFA'd family connection to help bolster catching depth. Since Connor Wong's injury, the Boston Red Sox have been searching for effective replacements behind the plate. Carlos Narváez has taken over the starting job after beating out Blake Sabol in spring training. The latter has since been called up to be the backup, but beyond that, their depth is relatively poor.
