2/28/24 Wednesday's spring training report: Red Sox strike out 13 times, lose to Nationals. BREAKDOWN: The Sox were held to seven hits, all singles, and struck out 13 times. Mark Kolozsvary, a catcher in camp on a minor league contract, was 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Josh Winckowski had an easy two innings, walking the first batter he faced before retiring six in a row. Zack Kelly followed and allowed two runs on three hits and two walks.

2/20/24 Red Sox 5-foot-7 catcher went from preferred walk-on in college to majors. Mark Kolozsvary is approximately five inches shorter than the average MLB catcher. “I think I'm like 5-7 ½, maybe,” Kolozsvary told MassLive on Monday at JetBlue Park. The Red Sox signed Kolozsvary in December to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to big league camp. The average MLB catcher in 2023 stood at 6-0 ½ feet, according to Jomboy Media and strength coach Ryan Horton.

2/18/24 Red Sox roster competition includes catching position; Gold Glover in mix. Three of them are on the 40-man roster and four are non-roster invitees, including two-time Gold Glove winner Roberto Pérez. Boston signed both Pérez and Mark Kolozsvary to minor league contracts with big league camp invites. Pérez, 35, won Gold Gloves in 2019 and '20 with Cleveland and has played in 516 major league games. Connor Wong, Reese McGuire and Tyler Heineman are on Boston's 40-man roster.

12/22/23 Red Sox Reportedly Ink Veteran Catcher To Minor League Deal. The Boston Red Sox signed catcher Mark Kolozsvary to a minor league deal Friday, according to Kiley McDaniel of ESPN. It's definitely not a response to Yoshinobu Yamamoto's record-setting deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but this move serves a purpose for the Red Sox. Boston has just two catchers on its current 40-man roster, Reese McGuire and Connor Wong.

6/15/23 Thursday Bird Droppings: The Orioles look to rebound and grab a series victory. Although a couple of late-inning two-out rallies did bring the tying and even winning runs to the plate, the Orioles never really felt like they had a chance on Wednesday night as they lost to the Jays, 3-1. Check out my recap of the game for the not-so-lovely totals. At least Jose Berríos won't be pitching again today. Last night's loss thwarted the Orioles effort to reach 19 games over .500 for the first time since the 2014 season. The Orioles were busy over the last couple of days, adding Mark Kolozsvary one day and removing him the next, as well as calling up infield prospect Joey Ortiz and journeyman reliever Reed Garrett yesterday.

6/14/23 Emerging depth provides Baltimore options to replace Mountcastle and rest Rutschman. The Orioles are back at it again with the third catcher. Baltimore selected Mark Kolozsvary's contract yesterday and placed Ryan Mountcastle on the 10-day injured list. The Orioles originally claimed Kolozsvary from the Reds last October. Losing Mountcastle stings, but recent additions will allow the Orioles to navigate the injury while providing some extra rest for their franchise player.

7/09/22 Kolozsvary scores on game-ending balk as Reds beat Rays 2-1.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Mark Kolozsvary scored on a game-ending balk by Matt Wisler in the 10th inning, lifting the Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.

Kolozsvary opened the 10th on second as a pinch-runner for Mike Moustakas. He advanced on Nick Senzel’s sacrifice bunt against Wisler (2-3). Albert Almora Jr. walked before Wisler’s balk with pinch-hitter Tyler Naquin at the plate.

“I have no idea what he (Wisler) did,” Kolozsvary said. "I was kind of focused on other things. It was a really good feeling to celebrate with the guys.”

“I didn’t see the balk at all, but we’ll take it," Reds manager David Bell said. "I’d rather think about getting to that point. So many good things happened. We played a great game to be able to be in the position to win it.”

Wisler was called for tapping his left thigh, a move he said he often uses to get a new pitch signal.

“It’s a move I’ve made lots of times,” he said. “I tap my leg when I want a sign. I feel like I’ve done that lots of times. I’m a big leg-tapper.

“I would like to have had a chance to make pitches instead of losing it that way.”

Tampa Bay had a chance to score in the top half of the inning, but Kyle Farmer cut down Francisco Mejia at the plate on Yandy Diaz's grounder to shortstop against Josh Kuhnel (1-1). The play was upheld by a video review.

Farmer then snared Wander Franco's liner and stepped on second for an inning-ending double play.

It was the majors' first game-ending balk since Dylan Floro for the Dodgers in a 5-4 loss at Seattle on Aug. 18, 2018. It was the first such loss for the Rays in franchise history.

Brandon Drury homered to help last-place Cincinnati win back-to-back games for the first time since June 26 in San Francisco and June 28 over the Cubs in Chicago. Senzel had two of the Reds' four hits.

Cincinnati has posted its first three walk-off wins of the season in the last six days.

Tampa Bay had won two straight and five of six after a four-game losing streak.

Rays left-hander Shane McClanahan struck out eight while working six innings of one-run ball. He retired his last 10 batters.

Tampa Bay jumped in front on Ji-Man Choi's RBI single in the third, but that was it for the Rays against Luis Castillo and three relievers.

Castillo struck out eight in seven innings. The right-hander, one of the majors' top trade targets ahead of the Aug. 2 deadline, is 1-0 with a sparkling 0.90 ERA in his last three starts.

Castillo retired 13 of his last 14 batters.
