2/05/24 Phillies fill 40-man roster, claim Diego Castillo from the Yankees. Imagine the day when the Phillies making news by adding a player with a .205/.250/.380 career line in over 280 plate appearances qualified as somewhat major news. Here in the slog that is the week before spring training, it qualifies as exactly that. Castillo is known for anything but hitting, having played five defensive positions with the Pirates in 2022 and even getting to pitch a bit for Pittsburgh, getting to face Handsome Dave Robertson. Without looking, do you think Castillo has a minor league option left?

11/19/23 2023 Diamondbacks Reviews: #53 Diego Castillo. If this were a Random D-Back piece I would have researched Diego Castillo a bit more, but since hardly anyone reads these player reviews, I will keep myself and my precious time a bit more limited. Diego Castillo was born in Venezuela, the mother land of catchers, but wasn't a catcher himself. Castillo was one of the better signings of his class, being ranked as highly as 16 and as low as 24. Signed as a shortstop with a good glove, the Yankees' hope was of course that he could become the kind of shortstop prodigy many teams hope for: good with the glove, good enough with the bat.

7/07/22 Pirates take first of doubleheader from Reds. It wasn’t the most exciting game—at least, not for anyone not named Jason Delay—but anytime the Jolly Roger is raised, it’s a good day for the Pirates. The Pirates’ offense got started with a Diego Castillo homer, and although the Reds tied the game a couple of times, they never got the lead, even though Reds starter Mike Minor also had a fine game.

6/28/22 Washington Nationals 3-1 over Pittsburgh Pirates: Patrick Corbin Ks 12 in eight strong. Corbin held the Pittsburgh Pirates off the board through five tonight, working around a hit and a walk in the first, retiring the side in order in the second, stranding back-to-back one-out hits in the third, setting the Pirates down in a quick, 1-2-3 fourth, and leaving a leadoff single and two-out walk on in the fifth, which he completed at 72 pitches, but two outs into the sixth, Diego Castillo hit a full-count sinker up in the zone out to right and over the out-of-town scoreboard for a game-...

6/14/22 Castillo's three errors factor into Pirates' 3-1 loss to Cardinals. If this game had a theme song, at least for the Pirates, it would be this: It’s bad enough that the Bucs have lost eight in a row, going down to the Cardinals 3-1 at Busch Stadium this afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. What made it worse is that it was an absolute circus of a fourth inning that sealed the Pirates’ fate, and rookie shortstop Diego Castillo was the ringleader.

4/30/22 Bucs drop another with 7-3 loss to Padres. The Pittsburgh Pirates got off to a good start in the bottom of the first after RBI singles from Daniel Vogelbach and Diego Castillo, but they couldn’t sustain it as their starting pitching continued to struggle in a 7-3 defeat to the San Diego Padres. Zach Thompson went four and one third innings, giving up four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three, including a two run homer to Ha-Seong Kim in the third to take the loss.

4/19/22 Bucs bats mostly silent in 6-1 loss to Brewers. The only Pittsburgh run came off of a solo homer in the fourth from Diego Castillo, which was his first regular season home run of his career. That homer actually tied up the game for the Bucs, but starting pitcher Zach Thompson would quickly give it away in the bottom of the inning, giving up five runs in the frame. Thompson took the loss an is now the third Pirates starting pitcher — joining Mitch Keller and JT Brubaker — to have an ERA of 9.00 or above.

4/04/22 Bucs bomb Baltimore 9-3 on more long balls from Diego Castillo and Bryan Reynolds. Man, these two are having a fun spring. The Pittsburgh Pirates continued their preseason fascination with the long ball, with two red hot hitters going yard once again as Diego Castillo and Bryan Reynolds both homered today to give the Buccos a 9-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. First it was Castillo with a two-run blast in the third to put Pittsburgh up 4-0.
