1/01/24 Player Review: David Villar. Last year, David Villar was the recipient of the Good Luck, We're All Counting On You medal when Farhan Zaidi considered him — along with Casey Schmitt and J.D. Davis — enough depth to overcome the loss of Evan Longoria. Villar had just hit .231/.331/.455 (.787 OPS) in 52 games for the Giants, with 9 home runs, 6 doubles, and a triple in 181 plate appearances; although, most of that success came in the final month of the season, where in September and the beginning of October (29 games), he slashed .269/.327/.570 (.897 OPS) with 8 home runs and 4 doubles.

9/07/23 Minor League round up, 9/6: David Villar is still raking. The Minor League Baseball season is winding down, but all four of the San Francisco Giants Minor League Baseball affiliates were in action on Wednesday. As if to stick their nose out at the Giants, the River Cats have opened up their series with 32 hits and 18 runs in the first 2 games. Just a delightful offensive showing for the River Cats in this one, as they not only had 17 hits, but also drew 11 walks.

5/14/23 Brandon Crawford activated from IL, David Villar optioned; Luke Jackson begins rehab. A few minutes ago, the San Francisco Giants announced that David Villar had been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento after yesterday's game in order to activate Brandon Crawford for today's finale in Arizona. Not a surprising move by any stretch — Susan Slusser interviewed him in an article published May 10th where even he knew the writing was on the wall — but another one that shows the Giants are walking a tightrope when it comes to rebuilding and developing. “The one thing I would be continue to be really clear about is it's only been 100 plate appearances for David,” Kapler said. Villar's at 50% flyballs in exactly 100 PA and his 14.3% FB/HR rate is nearly right in line with the team's overall rate of 17.4% (tied for 2nd-best in MLB).

5/11/23 Examining David Villar's role with Giants' breakout players, roster moves. David Villar was supposed to be the everyday third baseman for the Giants, but he now finds himself mostly playing off the bench and possibly looking at a stint in the minors.

5/10/23 SF Giants not giving up on slumping David Villar, but third base is no longer his job. The Giants aren't giving up on David Villar, but for now, third base is no longer his job. Villar was on the bench again on Wednesday as he continues to sit against most right-handed pitchers. It's somewhat of a surprise given the Giants were using Villar as the three-hole hitter during the first week of the season and expected him to be their everyday third baseman. “Unless you just signed a fresh multi-year contract, there's always competition for playing time,” manager Gabe Kapler said.

4/13/23 This David Is No Masterpiece But….. Michaelangelo's statue of David is arguably the most famous statue in existence. Korean bus tours ferry their customers to gawk at it, so you know it's famous beyond famous. Giorgio Vasari, a renowned Renaissance painter himself, said this about the statue of David: "When all was finished, it cannot be denied that this work has carried off the palm from all other statues, modern or ancient, Greek or Latin; no other artwork is equal to it in any respect, with such just proportion, beauty and excellence did Michelagnolo finish it" The David I'm going to be talking about in this piece is far from perfection. In fact, his imperfections are so apparent that the boy from the Mask, not the Jim Carrey one but the Cher one, has become more confident. This David whom I write of is David Villar of the San Francisco Giants. Here's why I think he has some utility.

4/04/23 Villar homers twice, Giants hit 7 in romp over White Sox. The San Francisco Giants were looking for a spark from their offense. David Villar hit two of San Francisco's seven home runs, Anthony DeSclafani tossed three-hit ball over six scoreless innings and the Giants pounded the Chicago White Sox 12-3 on Monday afternoon. “I think it was just continuing to get our 'A' swings off,” Villar said. Villar hit a solo homer in the fifth and his first career grand slam in the ninth.

4/03/23 Villar homers twice, Giants hit 7 in romp over White Sox. David Villar hit two of San Francisco’s seven home runs, Anthony DeSclafani tossed three-hit ball over six scoreless innings and the Giants pounded the Chicago White Sox 12-3. Villar hit a solo homer in the fifth and a grand slam in the ninth. Joc Pederson, Michael Conforto, Thairo Estrada, Mike Yastrzemski and Bryce Johnson also went deep. The Giants spoiled Chicago’s first home game under manager Pedro Grifol. Pederson got the home run derby going when he connected leading off a two-run second. The Giants smacked four more homers in the fifth, the first time they hit four in an inning since Sept. 18, 2011 at Colorado. Conforto and Estrada went back to back, and so did Yastrzemski and Villar.

2/21/23 SF Giants: It's David Villar's time, and he knows it. In other words, the 2022 graphite gray sedan was an appropriate offseason splurge for the 26-year-old who enters his first big-league camp as the Giants' incumbent third baseman. Despite a vast array of right-handed hitting corner infielders, the Giants have it made it clear: After 56 home runs over the past two seasons — including nine last year with the Giants — the third base job is Villar's to lose. “It's really just an honor to be in this spot that I'm in, to have the front office and Gabe (Kapler) and all the staff behind me, believing in me and all the work I've put in to get to this point in my career, I'm lucky to be in this spot,” Villar said this week, as position players reported for spring training. While the new ride is plenty sweet — it's the first car Villar has ever owned, swapping out his dad's 2006 Lexus — it might not have been his most important offseason purchase.
