5/04/24 Cubs option Matt Mervis to Triple-A Iowa, recall Miles Mastrobuoni. Ahead of the second game of a pivotal three-game set at Wrigley Field against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers, the Chicago Cubs announced a pair of roster moves as the club's offense continues to struggle.

4/24/24 Chicago Cubs slugger Matt Mervis may be on his last chance with the major league team. Matt Mervis is finally returning to the Windy City. After mashing through the minors to start the season, the Chicago Cubs are rightfully giving the lefty first baseman another chance to prove himself beyond his cup of coffee with the big league team last year. Alas, this may also be Mash's last real shot with the big league team, albeit not through much fault of his own. During the offseason, the Cubs acquired heralded first base prospect Michael Busch from the Dodgers who has thus far blossomed in his new home and is seen as a leading candidate for Rookie of the Year.

4/23/24 Report: Cubs call up Mervis, Wesneski. CHICAGO — The Cubs are calling up Matt Mervis and Hayden Wesneski, according to a report. Tommy Birch, a beat reporter who covers the Iowa Cubs, gave the news Tuesday morning and said no corresponding moves have been made yet. Mervis returns to the North Side after a meager 97 at-bat stint last summer. Prior […]

4/17/24 Chicago Cubs Prospects: Mash Mervis is begging to break our hearts again. Chicago Cubs first base prospect Matt Mervis is doing it again. Mervis is off to an incredibly hot start in Triple-A Iowa and he's making fans start to wonder if it's time to dust off their “Mash” Mervis t-shirts. The short answer is that we've been burned by that hot start before. In 2023, the Cubs made the decision to keep Matt Mervis in Triple-A for more than a month to start the season.

3/18/24 Latest Chicago Cubs roster cut may be final chance for popular prospect. With the Chicago Cubs planning on using a rotation of players as the designated hitter this season, there was a thought that Matt Mervis could make the roster as a left-handed power hitter. On a roster that includes Cody Bellinger, Michael Busch, and Patrick Wisdom, Mervis does not have a path to regular playing time at the Major League level as a first baseman. It was an opportunity that Mervis was afforded last season but struggled in his initial stint. Mervis posted a 46 wRC+ in 99 plate appearances at the Major League level last season before being demoted back to Triple-A Iowa.

10/10/23 Writing is on the wall that the Chicago Cubs do not value Matt Mervis. There was an expectation that first base prospect Matt Mervis would play an important role for the Chicago Cubs' offense in 2023 and that likely was the reason why the team did not fully address the first position last winter. The expectation was that Mancini and Hosmer would serve as stopgaps at the first base position until Mervis was ready.

7/19/23 Report reveals why Matt Mervis hasn't returned to Cubs' roster. With the Chicago Cubs continuing to get little-to-no production from their first basemen this season, there have been plenty of questions about why Matt Mervis hasn’t returned to the big leagues, and it turns out there is a very specific reason.

6/11/23 Cubs 4, Giants 0: Kyle Hendricks throws a vintage Professor game, four outs short of a no-hitter. Hendricks was, as the headline says, vintage Professor in this game, changing speeds, getting weak contact and making the most out of what was once — and perhaps will be again — the most devastating changeup in the game. All that and a couple of home runs from scuffling hitters Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel added up to a tremendously satisfying 4-0 win over the Giants, the Cubs' first road win on a Saturday in 2023. The Cubs took the lead in the top of the third on this leadoff homer by Mervis, his third [VIDEO].

6/08/23 Why Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel are in tough spots as Chicago Cubs try to get their anemic offense on track. ANAHEIM, Calif. — Chicago Cubs first baseman Matt Mervis got the pitch he wanted. He worked a 2-0 count against Los Angeles Angels starter Jaime Barria in the fifth inning Wednesday when a slider from the right-hander caught too much of the zone. Mervis smoked the ball, pulling it to right field with the hardest-hit ball — 110.1 mph — any player either team produced in the game. Mervis, ...

Mervis smoked the ball, pulling it to right field with the hardest-hit ball — 110.1 mph — any player either team produced in the game. Mervis, though, had nothing to show for the great contact. Despite the .750 expected batting average on the 300-foot line drive, Angels right fielder Mickey Moniak hauled it in to keep the runner at first.

6/07/23 'Absolutely nails': How Cubs' Julian Merryweather carved out leverage role. The bottom of the fifth inning of the Cubs' 7-4 loss Tuesday seemed like it would never end. First baseman Matt Mervis' fielding error extended it, and then lefty reliever Brandon Hughes faced four batters without recording an out, marred by uncharacteristic control issues. Then, right-hander Julian Merryweather tapped in. Mercifully, he struck out Brandon Drury on three straight sliders.

5/17/23 How the 2019 Cape Cod League became a pivotal point in Cubs slugger Matt Mervis’ career. CHICAGO — In the lead-up to the 2019 Cape Cod League season, a player landed on Mike Roberts’ radar. Roberts loves left-handed hitters. So when Duke coach Chris Pollard called to tell Roberts of a strong, athletic left-handed hitter Pollard wanted to send to him for the Cape Cod League, Roberts welcomed the opportunity to work with Matt Mervis. 5/17/23 Chicago Cubs first baseman Matt Mervis deserves patience amid a slow start. First baseman Matt Mervis is off to a somewhat slow start to his Chicago Cubs career. Since coming up to face the Marlins at Wrigley Field, he has yet to deliver on the promise he showed in the minor leagues, hitting only .219/.265/.250 before Tuesday night's game, good for a 43 wRC+. One caveat to Mervis's struggles is the quality and variety of pitching he's faced so far. Major league pitching is another caliber and to be immediately confronted with not only some of the better arms but ones that play to a hitter's weakness is a tough break to start off.

5/17/23 How the 2019 Cape Cod League became a pivotal point in Chicago Cubs slugger Matt Mervis' career. In the lead-up to the 2019 Cape Cod League season, a player landed on Mike Roberts' radar. Roberts loves left-handed hitters. So when Duke coach Chris Pollard called to tell Roberts of a strong, athletic left-handed hitter Pollard wanted to send to him for the Cape Cod League, Roberts welcomed the opportunity to work with Matt Mervis. The first priority for Roberts, the Cotuit Kettleers manager, was simply assessing, can Mervis hit? Roberts figured the two-way player always could go back to pitching if the hitting route didn't pan out. But he wanted to get an idea of Mervis' mechanics and skill set at the plate. One element of Mervis' approach immediately stood out: a huge, problematic loop in

5/09/23 Matt Mervis shares coincidental reason he chose Cubs over Yankees. When Matt Mervis was deciding where to sign in 2020, his decision ultimately came down to a guess. Mervis is one of the unique players who went unselected in the five-round 2020 draft. The 25-year-old was down to two teams, the Cubs and the Yankees. At the time, the Yankees had Luke Voit at first, and under team control.
