It's nice to see J.P. back at the top of the lineup, although the fun is dulled a little bit by an off-day for the freshly-minted AL Player of the Week, Julio Rodríguez. Hopefully it's just a day off for the red-hot Julio, whose back could certainly use a rest after he carried the team through the Royals series and the first part of the Astros series. On an 0-2 count with the bases loaded last Thursday night, University of West Georgia alumnus Cade Marlowe hit the long ball, allowing his Seattle Mariners to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-3 in the series opener. “That's what it's all about: helping the team win,” Marlowe told MLB Network in a press conference after the game. Marlowe played his last baseball with UWG back in 2018, where he played in 48 games with 48 starts in center field and was ultimately named First Team All-Gulf South Conference. The elusive goal of getting to four games over .500, something they've failed to do in this back-and-forth season, a start to sustained success and better days ahead, ended with an ugly, flailing swing from Julio Rodriguez on a pitch nowhere near the strike zone. With their most talented player at the plate, and the Diamondbacks using their third reliever of the top of the ninth, Cade Marlowe, representing the tying run, was waiting to race home from third base if given the chance, and J.P. Crawford, the Mariners best player this season, was on first having worked an eight-pitch walk against lefty Andrew Chafin.
