10/13/24 | Anthony Volpe embracing Yankees' World Series expectations: 'The standard'. Anthony Volpe is in his first postseason ride with the Yankees. Unlike most young players, though, the shortstop already knew about expectations in The Bronx well before he joined the organization as a first-round pick in 2019. “For me, I grew up a fan, and what makes the Yankees the Yankees is winning and winning a World Series,'' Volpe said before a workout at the Stadium on Sunday in advance of Game 1 of the ALCS against Cleveland. “That was always … the standard,” Volpe said. “At least from the outside and getting drafted as an 18-year-old and coming up through the system, learning from the inside how they treat the players. It's first class for a reason, and all the reasons are to win.” Source: https://nypost.com/2024/10/14/sports/anthony-volpe... |

10/10/24 | Benches briefly empty as tensions boil over between Yankees, Royals in their AL Division Series. Benches briefly emptied in Game 4 of the AL Division Series between the Yankees and Royals after New York shortstop Anthony Volpe delivered a hard tag on Michael Garcia to complete a double play in the sixth inning Thursday night. No punches were thrown but plenty of words were exchanged between teams that have come to loathe each other. The angst can be traced back to the late 1970s, but it was ramped up again earlier in the week, when Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said the Royals were lucky to win Game 2 of the series in New York. Chisholm has been reminded of the comment at every at-bat in Kansas City, getting a steady stream of boos from a crowd starved for postseason baseball. 10/10/24 | Anthony Volpe makes 'sick' play to secure Yankees' Game 3 victory. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In the spring of 2023, the Yankees named Anthony Volpe to the Opening Day roster, even though he'd played just 22 games at the Triple-A level. At the time, Aaron Boone noted Volpe's “energy” and “an instinct that he has that's evident.” Over the course of his two seasons in The Bronx, Volpe has gone through his fair share of difficulty, but so far this October, he's lived up to Boone's billing. 10/08/24 | Yankees hope Anthony Volpe's hard hits are harbinger of things to come. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jim Hendry was one of the scouts who helped make sure Anthony Volpe became a Yankee out of Delbarton HS. The longtime executive watched Volpe in high school and was confident the shortstop not only could perform during the regular season, but when it mattered most, as well. “He just had it,” Hendry, a special assistant to general manager Brian Cashman, said this week at Yankee Stadium. “I knew the moment wouldn't get too big for him.” 3 Anthony Volpe rips a single during the second inning of the Yankees' 4-2 loss to the Royals in Game 2 of the ALDS. 10/05/24 | Anthony Volpe's Yankees throwing error looms large as Royals pounce with two runs. MLB Anthony Volpe's Yankees throwing error looms large as Royals pounce with two runs By Andrew Battifarano Published Oct. 5, 2024, 9:07 p.m. ET Anthony Volpe made the great stop. The throw was less than ideal. With the Yankees leading by one in the top of the sixth of ALDS Game 1 at the Stadium, Royals outfielder Tommy Pham hit a hot shot — at 102.5 mph — toward short, which Volpe flagged down adroitly with a beautiful diving stop on his backhand. But with a runner on first, Volpe appeared to try to gun the throw to second — maybe in hopes of turning a quick twin-killing — but his throw was well off the mark, missing Gleyber Torres' glove wide to the left. The team had just lost a 6-5 ballgame in epic fashion, as Anthony Volpe bobbled a routine grounder before Alex Verdugo faceplanted on a flyball with a 99% catch probability. 9/17/24 | Slumping Anthony Volpe taking a seat again for Yankees' opener vs. Mariners. SEATTLE — After starting 139 straight games, Anthony Volpe is getting his second day off in the last eight games on Tuesday. The Yankees' streaky shortstop will be on the bench to start Tuesday's series opener against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park, manager Aaron Boone said on his weekly podcast with Jomboy Media, with Oswaldo Cabrera getting the start against right-hander Bryan Woo. Woo is especially tough on right-handed hitters — holding them to a .179 average and .491 OPS in 37 career starts — so Boone explained the decision as wanting to get more left-handed hitters like Cabrera in the lineup. 8/23/24 | Lifelong Yankees fan Anthony Volpe excited to celebrate 2009 champs at Old-Timers' Day. Last year's Old-Timers' Day was naturally special for then-rookie Anthony Volpe, but Saturday's commemoration of the 15th anniversary of the 2009 World Series championship team means even more to the lifelong Yankees fan. “It was the only one in my lifetime, so that'll be awesome,” Volpe told The Post before the Bombers took on the Rockies on Friday night in The Bronx. “Last year was definitely special, just to meet and see a bunch of people I look up to.” It will be the 76th Old-Timers' Day for the organization, which has dedicated the day to honoring members of its most recent championship team. 8/22/24 | Yankees' Brian Cashman responds to Anthony Volpe demotion chatter. The people mentioning a minor-league reset for New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe are the media and fans, according to general manager Brian Cashman, because he certainly isn't thinking about it. Despite Volpe's underwhelming offensive production — .249/.299/.387 with 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, 22 steals and a 91 OPS+ over 564 plate appearances entering Thursday — Cashman told The New York Post that Volpe is a major-league player and that means struggling (and eventually flourishing) there. “We haven't talked about (a demotion),” Cashman said in a story published Tuesday. 8/15/24 | Year 2 wasn't supposed to look like this for the Yankees' Anthony Volpe and Mets' Francisco Alvarez. Anthony Volpe and Francisco Alvarez have had remarkably similar career trajectories. Born about seven months apart in 2001, they were both signed by their teams to deals worth roughly $2.7 million and played roughly the same number of games in the minors (275 for Volpe and 263 for Alvarez). They emerged as key contributors in 2023. Volpe won the Yankees starting shortstop job out of spring training and made his MLB debut on Opening Day. Alvarez took over behind the plate for the Mets full-time just over a week into last season. And each had an up-and-down rookie season: Volpe showed some unexpected power with 21 homers, but too many strikeouts (167, or 27.8 percent of his plate appearances).
