Unlike most young players, though, the shortstop already knew about expectations in The Bronx well before he joined the organization as a first-round pick in 2019. “For me, I grew up a fan, and what makes the Yankees the Yankees is winning and winning a World Series,'' Volpe said before a workout at the Stadium on Sunday in advance of Game 1 of the ALCS against Cleveland. “That was always … the standard,” Volpe said. “At least from the outside and getting drafted as an 18-year-old and coming up through the system, learning from the inside how they treat the players. Benches briefly emptied in Game 4 of the AL Division Series between the Yankees and Royals after New York shortstop Anthony Volpe delivered a hard tag on Michael Garcia to complete a double play in the sixth inning Thursday night. No punches were thrown but plenty of words were exchanged between teams that have come to loathe each other. The angst can be traced back to the late 1970s, but it was ramped up again earlier in the week, when Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. said the Royals were lucky to win Game 2 of the series in New York. Chisholm has been reminded of the comment at every at-bat in Kansas City, getting a steady stream of boos from a crowd starved for postseason baseball. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In the spring of 2023, the Yankees named Anthony Volpe to the Opening Day roster, even though he'd played just 22 games at the Triple-A level. SEATTLE — After starting 139 straight games, Anthony Volpe is getting his second day off in the last eight games on Tuesday. The Yankees' streaky shortstop will be on the bench to start Tuesday's series opener against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park, manager Aaron Boone said on his weekly podcast with Jomboy Media, with Oswaldo Cabrera getting the start against right-hander Bryan Woo. Born about seven months apart in 2001, they were both signed by their teams to deals worth roughly $2.7 million and played roughly the same number of games in the minors (275 for Volpe and 263 for Alvarez). They emerged as key contributors in 2023. Volpe won the Yankees starting shortstop job out of spring training and made his MLB debut on Opening Day. Alvarez took over behind the plate for the Mets full-time just over a week into last season.
