LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers have designated outfielder TJ Hopkins for assignment just 48 hours after he was claimed off waivers from the San Francisco Giants . Hopkins' 40-man roster spot was needed after the Tigers signed veteran infielder Gio Urshela to a one-year deal on Thursday. Hopkins took a late-night flight from Arizona to Florida on Tuesday and was quickly on the practice field after passing his physical on Wednesday morning. But his stay in Tigertown could be a short one. He's now back on the waiver wire and could be headed to another camp if he's claimed. The San Francisco Giants have been active at the top end of free agency, but that doesn't preclude them from operating at the margins. After signing center fielder Jung Hoo Lee for $113 million over six years, the Giants added another outfielder — although on a much smaller scale. Tuesday morning, the team announced they traded cash and a player to be named later for TJ Hopkins, who played 25 games for the Reds last year.
