8/10/25 Pirates Pitching Struggles in Loss to Reds. The Pittsburgh Pirates got solid production from their offense, but their pitching struggled throughout in a 14-8 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds in the series finale at PNC Park. The Pirates took the first two games of the series, 7-0 on Aug. 7 and 3-2 on Aug. 8, but dropped the final two, including 2-1 on Aug. 9, splitting their four-game series with the Reds. Pittsburgh drops to 51-68 overall and 34-29 at home, while Cincinnati improves to 62-57 overall and 29-31 on the road. The Pirates loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning with one out, with second baseman Nick Gonzales and right fielder Jack Suwinski hitting back-to-back singles, then shortstop Jared Triolo reached first base on a fielder's choice.

Horwitz hit a two-run homer in the second inning, added a three-run shot in the sixth and knocked in his sixth run with a ground out in the eighth. The Pirates' 27-year-old leadoff hitter has five homers and 31 RBIs in 61 games this season. Nick Gonzales knocked in a run with an infield single in the first inning before Tommy Pham hit a two-run homer, his fifth, for Pittsburgh. Pirates starter Mitch Keller worked five innings and allowed seven hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts.

Whisenhunt gave up a homer to the third batter he faced, NIck Gonzales, and three more runs in the second but then finished with three scoreless innings before departing after the fifth with the score tied 4-4. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run double then scored on Tommy Pham's single for a 4-1 lead in the second. The Giants came back with two runs in the bottom of the second and tied it game on Willy Adames' second RBI hit in the fourth.

The Pirates end a four-game losing streak with the win and avoid a sweep by the Tigers, who won 7-3 on June 17 and 9-2 in the first game of the double header, plus the last two games vs. the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, 2-1 on June 14 and 3-2 in extra innings on June 15. Nick Gonzales was back in the Pittsburgh Pirates starting lineup on Tuesday night for the first time since breaking his left ankle while hitting a home run on opening day in Miami on March 27. The second baseman was activated from the 60-day injured list before the opener of a three-game series with the visiting Houston Astros. Gonzales had been sidelined with a non-displaced fracture.

5/17/25 Pirates Second Baseman Starting Rehab Assignment. The Pittsburgh Pirates are getting closer to having their starting second baseman return to the major leagues. The Pirates announced on May 16 that Nick Gonzales started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis. Gonzales hit a two-run home on Opening Day vs. the Miami Marlins at loanDepot Park on March 27, but limped during his home run trot and Pirates manager Derek Shelton took him out afterwards.

Nick Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning in the Pirates home opener vs. the Miami Marlins on March 27, giving his team a 4-1 lead. The Pirates would take Gonzales out of the game, with Adam Frazier coming in at second base. Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after the game that he suffered some pain from two foul balls off his left ankle against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 19.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were only a few innings into the regular season and a freak injury on opening day already threw a wrench into the team's lineup. Pirates infielder Nick Gonzales played in 94 games last season and hit .270 with an OPS of .709. Gonzales hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning of the team's 5-4 loss to the Marlins.
