5/14/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - A's activate Gelof from IL, option Butler, Lucas to Triple-A. The Athletics will get back in the midst of their current 10-game road trip. In a flurry of roster moves Tuesday, Oakland reinstated second baseman Zack Gelof after he was placed on the last month with a left oblique strain. The A’s also recalled left-handed pitcher Brady Basso from Double-A Midland and optioned left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas and outfielder Lawrence Butler to Triple-A Las Vegas. Gelof played consecutive full rehab games with Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday and Sunday before joining the A’s in Houston for their current four-game set against the Astros. After a breakout rookie season in 2023, Gelof slashed .196/.260/.337 with three home runs, seven RBI and four stolen bases in his first 92 at-bats in 2024 before sustaining the injury. Butler’s demotion felt imminent to the 2024 MLB season. The 23-year-old has four doubles, two home runs and 15 walks while hitting .170 in 106 at-bats. He has a lot to feel good about, however, on his way to Triple-A as he hopes to improve on some things working his way back to the big leagues. 4/23/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - A's Zack Gelof reveals three MLB players he tries to emulate. Programming note: Brodie Brazil’s full “All A’s” interview with Zack Gelof will air at 3 p.m. PT Tuesday on NBC Sports California, and again at 9:30 p.m. PT. Since Oakland called up Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas last July, the second baseman has emerged as one of MLB’s promising young stars and a valuable building block for the Athletics organization. To continue his upward trajectory, and incorporates baseball’s best into his developing game. When talking to NBC Sports California’s Brodie Brazil on a recent episode of “All A’s,” the young infielder listed three MLB players he tries to emulate. “For me, I have really tried to emulate my game over three guys: [New York Yankees’] DJ LeMahieu, [Texas Rangers’] Marcus Semien and [Philadelphia Phillies’] Trea Turner.” Gelof’s list of active role models makes sense, considering the trio only consists of big-time infielders. LeMahieu, Semien and Turner have combined to earn seven MLB All-Star nods and five Silver Slugger awards as some of the smoothest two-way players in the game for years, continuously inspiring Gelof. “DJ, just being one of the best hitters in the game and being a really tall infielder, you know, won a Gold Glove,” Gelof added. “And then you got Marcus Semien, who shows up every day and has gotten better, and obviously, a former A who has been super successful [and] a World Series champ now. And then Trea Turner, with how smooth he is. I feel like when I’m loose and athletic, I play my best. “So, I try to have a little bit of each of those guys.” The three stars have been major influences on Gelof, who was last after slashing .286/.350/.562 with eight doubles, seven home runs and 15 RBI over 27 games. But Semien, in particular, stands out to Gelof as an Oakland icon and a predecessor. “What [Marcus] has done has been super cool to watch — just his career, in general,” Gelof told Brazil. “He shows up every day. I feel like that’s the ultimate teammate, when a guy can show up every day for 160 games and give it his best. That’s something that’s super tough to do. I don’t know how Cal Ripken [Jr.] did it for all those years.” Excluding the 2017 MLB season when Semien missed three months with a broken right wrist, the six-year A’s infielder played in 97 percent of regular-season games, or 688 of a possible 708. Now in his , Gelof hopes to be as available as Semien. “Just showing up every day, I think, is going to be something I want to be known for,” Gelof concluded. Gelof has struggled to begin the 2024 MLB season with a .261 OBP. But with his determination and choices of idols, surely he’ll get back on track and be an everyday player for years to come.

4/22/24 Gelof hits a 2-run homer in the 9th to lift A's over Yankees 2-0 after 1st-inning ejection of Boone. Zack Gelof hit a two-run homer off Victor González in the ninth, and the Oakland Athletics stopped an eight-game losing streak in the Bronx by beating the Yankees 2-0 following the first-inning ejection of New York manager Aaron Boone over what appeared to be a fan remark aimed at the plate umpire. After New York’s Carlos Rodón and Oakland’s JP Sears matched each other with shutout ball, Abraham Toro reached off González leading off the ninth when the pitcher slipped while trying to pick up his dribbler. Gelof hit an opposite-field drive into the right-field seats.

4/08/24 MLB: Gelof delivers as the Oakland A's cruise past the Detroit Tigers 7-1. Zack Gelof had four hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in four runs to help the Oakland Athletics beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 on Sunday. Gelof hit an RBI triple in the first and scored on JJ Bleday's single. “For me, it's just swinging at the right pitches and then not making the situation bigger than it is,” Gelof said. Gelof drew three walks and scored three runs in the A's 4-0 victory on Saturday.

4/06/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - A's, Giants players offer preview of Sacramento's Sutter Health Park. A mix of Athletics and San Francisco Giants players have experience playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. While acknowledging the odd, heart-aching circumstances that will leave the Oakland Coliseum without an MLB team, members of both franchises know baseball will be played in California’s capital city. However, that’s not to say there isn’t much uncertainty regarding the and its ability to host a major-league team. “They definitely need a lot of upgrades to the clubhouse and cages, and all that stuff,” A’s second baseman Zack Gelof told CBS Sacramento’s Jake Gadon on Friday. “I’d say it was a below-average Triple-A [ballpark], and I’m sure they’ll take care of it, I guess, by next year.” Gelof, when visiting as a member of the A’s Triple-A team, the Las Vegas Aviators, wasn’t impressed by Sutter Health Park. His concerns are illustrated by the stadium’s design. Sutter Health Park offers smaller dimensions and holds only 14,000 compared to the Coiseum’s capacity of 63,000. While Oakland’s historic venue might have its caveats, it meets the standards of an MLB ballpark. Gelof’s points were backed across the Bay by Giants infielders Tyler Fitzgerald and Patrick Bailey, who both know what it’s like to , as they have played for the RiverCats – San Francisco’s Triple-A affiliate stationed at Sacramento’s ballpark. “Last year we had one [batting] cage for home and away, and I think this year they have two cages,” Fitzgerald told The Mercury News’ Joseph Dycus in an exclusive interview on Friday. “With a big-league club coming in, visiting teams are gonna need their own.” “The renovations they did make it much more presentable,” Bailey added. “You know, I don’t think any situation like this is ideal, but you know, hopefully they make the best of it.” Giants players only can preview the Sacramento baseball experience so much, as only time will tell how the A’s and MLB settle into Sutter Health Park. But Oakland slugger Brent Rooker, the A’s lone AL All-Star during the 2023 MLB season, trusts the MLBPA to handle the conversion of Sutter Health Park into a stadium suitable for the show. “No, I don’t think so,” Rooker answered Gadon when asked about issues with playing in Sacramento. “We trust our [Players Association] to make sure the right adjustments and amenities are met to make sure it’s a major league stadium by the time we get there.” While the A’s new ballpark potentially can be adjusted to fit MLB standards, Sacramento’s weather is uncontrollable. However, Giants pitcher Tristan Beck, who had stints with the River Cats across 2022 and 2023, believes the park is worthy of MLB competition, and concerns about Sacramento’s Central Valley weather aren’t deep. “I liked my time in Sacramento, and I know historically it’s been an unbelievable fanbase,” Beck explained to Dycus. “Sutter Park is an unbelievable ballpark, and I’ve heard the renovations they did this year are unbelievable. So it should be interesting. “I never really had a problem with the heat last year in Sacramento. I felt like other places we go to like Texas were way hotter.” The A’s will play at Sutter Health Park during the While the relocation process has had many twists and turns, Sacramento appears to be a real destination for the A’s — temporarily. However, Sutter Health Park’s offerings for players and fans will be heavily monitored as next season grows closer. Regardless, the Coliseum will be missed by baseball fans everywhere, like A’s third baseman J.D. Davis. “Being a Northern California kid growing up, seeing the A’s, seeing the Giants,” Davis recalled with Gadon. “Going to see them and playing at the Coliseum in high school, it’s going to be a downer for baseball, especially as you see the retired numbers up there … “I’m kind of mixed as a baseball fan. It being the Oakland Coliseum, it’s very much a historical place… leaving apart a little bit of history.” This story uses functionality that may not work in our app. to open the story in your web browser.
