5/06/24 Offensive woes follow Cards into series with Mets. St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol knows there is no magic solution to end his team's season-long offensive slump. "You've got to keep working, bottom line," Marmol said after St. Louis dropped two of three games to the struggling Chicago White Sox over the weekend. The Cardinals, who have lost four of their past five games, will try to break out of their hitting funk when they host the visiting New York Mets on Monday to open a three-game set. Masyn Winn and Lars Nootbaar hit infield singles on Sunday, snapping 0-for-16 and 0-for-10 slumps, respectively.

4/29/24 Cardinals Mets Baseball. St. Louis Cardinals' Masyn Winn, left, celebrates with Willson Contreras after scoring on a bunt by Michael Siani during the fifth inning of a baseball game against the New York Mets at Citi Field, Sunday, April 28, 2024, in New York.

4/26/24 Masyn Winn gets a day off against the Mets and old friend Pete Alonso: Cardinals Extra. Cardinals rookie shortstop Masyn Winn collected the first hit of his major-league career against the New York Mets last summer at Busch Stadium. Winn beat out an infield single for his first hit, and Mets first baseman Pete Alonso tossed the ball into the stands. The Cardinals did retrieve the ball from a fan, but Winn's teammates took issue with Alonso's actions and fans in St. Louis booed Alonso heavily for the rest of the series.

4/17/24 All the small (ball) ways Cardinals rookie Masyn Winn had a big impact in win vs. A's. It is becoming increasingly clear that any discussion about the range Cardinals rookie Masyn Winn has to influence the outcome of a game must be expanded. In a win late Tuesday night that became an ode to Whitey Herzog and the resourceful baseball that was part of his brand, the Cardinals' rookie shortstop contributed in ways that show how his skills fit that style. Winn made small ball do big things on the way to a 3-2 victory against the Oakland Athletics that featured all three runs scored by the Cardinals on productive outs. Winn scored one after a steal and a race home on a grounder, and he drove home another with a textbook sacrifice fly that turned into a decisive moment.

4/17/24 Cardinals beat the A's for the second night in a row in Oakland. It wasn't exactly a tribute to “Whiteyball” with only one stolen base, but the Cardinals found a way to win a game Tuesday night with a minimum amount of offense. One run scored on a groundout, and the other two runs were driven in with a fly ball as the Cardinals beat the A's for the second night in a row in Oakland. Of the Cardinals nine wins this season, four have come in games when they scored three runs. The only stolen base came from Masyn Winn, but the Cardinals also had a runner, Brendan Donovan, thrown out trying to steal second.

4/09/24 How an early-season power eclipse has Cardinals looking beyond the stars for offense. When he came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning Monday night with the tying run at third base and two outs, Masyn Winn thought only of changing the game. “I'm really just trying to get a single there; last year, I would have tried to hit a bomb to win it,” the Cardinals' rookie shortstop said. Winn's two-out single in the ninth completed the Cardinals' rally and, right before the Phillies' could get a 27th out, shoved the evening into extra innings. In the 10th, on the way to a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia at Busch Stadium, the top of the Cardinals' lineup came around and continued a cold snap that has followed them to four states and three time zones at the start of this season.

3/30/24 Cardinals' double play combo of Masyn Winn and Nolan Gorman had strong showing in a loss. Rookie shortstop Masyn Winn's superior athletic gifts make him a force in the field with elite defensive ability playing alongside a second baseman in Nolan Gorman with awe-inspiring prodigious power. Winn brings a vocal, high-energy and highly athletic brand of play to the field with a wiry 5-foot-11, 185-pound frame that belies his physical gifts. The often stoic Gorman packs enormous power in a 6-foot-1, 225-pound build that doesn't always reflect the skill in his game. Gorman came in and to his right to field a grounder off the bat of Los Angeles Dodgers phenom and two-time AL MVP Shohei Ohtani, quickly flipped to Winn, who caught the feed while keeping a foot on second base and then unleashed a laser beam to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt a split second before Ohtani could drop his foot on the bag.

3/01/24 Cardinals' Brandon Crawford Calls Out Giants Executive for Halting Reunion. “The bottom line is I was not wanted back by the one person whose opinion matters,” Crawford said. Crawford, who spent all 13 years of his career with the Giants, called a return the “ideal situation.” Unfortunately for the 37-year-old, Zaidi opted to go younger at the shortstop position. Crawford, a starter at shortstop since 2012, will likely take a backseat to the Cardinals' top shortstop prospect Masyn Winn in St. Louis.

2/27/24 How Cardinals believe Brandon Crawford, once a rival, can solve 3 concerns: Cardinals Extra. As the Cardinals reviewed a few of the things they prioritized this spring to help yank them out of last year's quagmire — stable and steady defense, starting Masyn Winn at shortstop and adding winning experience to the clubhouse — they spotted an area lacking on the camp roster that affected all three. “I've always liked the Cardinals organization from across the field,” All-Star shortstop Brandon Crawford said. A California native who played college ball at UCLA and played pro ball for San Francisco, Crawford is, for the first time in his career, on a new team and in a new state for spring training. Crawford arrived in Jupiter on Tuesday and tugged on a red Cardinals shirt and had to glance in a mirror.

2/26/24 Right on schedule, confident Masyn Winn is poised to be Cardinals’ opening day shortstop. “He believes in himself, we believe in him, and he plays like it,” manager Oliver Marmol said.

2/25/24 Cardinals start Masyn Winn at shortstop, scratch prospect Tekoah Roby from upcoming start. Held out from swinging a bat for a short period earlier this week, Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn is back to being a full participant and set for his 2024 spring debut. The 21-year-old is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff for the Cardinals for Sunday's road game vs. the Astros in West Palm Beach, Florida. Winn had a two-day pause on taking swings because of back tightness, but resumed hitting on Friday and took live batting practice on the backfields of the Cardinals complex on Saturday while St. Louis opened the Grapefruit League with split-squad games at home against the Marlins and on the road against the Mets.

2/23/24 Cardinals' Masyn Winn back to full participation in workouts, but status remains uncertain. Cardinals rookie shortstop Masyn Winn returned to full activity in Friday's spring training workout, yet he will not take the field when the club opens Grapefruit League play Saturday. Winn, 21, took part in batting practice on the field at the Cardinals' spring training facility and showed no visible signs of discomfort or pain. Winn had not hit on the field the previous two days due to stiffness/tightness, though he had been involved in defensive drills and baserunning. Prior to Friday's workout, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Winn would not play in either of Saturday's split squad games as they begin their spring training exhibition slate.

2/22/24 If not Masyn Winn, who? Cardinals discuss shortstop depth, whether there's enough: Cardinals Extra. When it comes to their starting shortstop, the Cardinals have not hidden their intentions or even tried to change the conversation with the usual platitudes of spring training because why deny the obvious — they want rookie Masyn Winn to seize the job. Winn did not participate in batting practice the past two days because of tightness in his upper body. Winn's absence, however, underscores how the Cardinals do not have an obvious long-term alternative in camp other than Tommy Edman, who is set to start in center field when he recovers from offseason wrist surgery. “We're having that conversation daily, right now, just amongst our staff,” manager Oliver Marmol said.

2/19/24 Cardinals' Masyn Winn gets 100% real on Ozzie Smith's massive impact on him. The legendary St. Louis Cardinals shortstop no longer does backflips on the field, but he continues to inspire not just baseball fans but also Cards players. Among them is St. Louis rookie infielder Masyn Winn, who was vocal about how big of an inspiration the Hall of Famer is to him. “He makes me want to carry that torch,” Winn said via (Benjamin Hochman of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch), “and perform the best that I can.” Hopefully for Winn and the Cardinals, he will be able to channel his admiration of Smith into better production at the plate in the 2024 MLB season than he did in 2023 when he appeared in 37 games for St. Louis.
