8/24/25 Rays Adding Lefty Ian Seymour to Rotation, Will Start Monday at Cleveland. The Joe Boyle experiment in the Tampa Bay Rays' starting rotation had a surprising and sudden ending on Friday when he was sent down after a third straight bad start Thursday night. The Rays announced that left-hander Ian Seymour will get his first major-league start on Monday night when they start a a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians. Shane Baz and Drew Rasmussen are being pushed back a day to make room for Seymour, and they'll start the Tuesday and Wednesday games. Seymour, a starter his entire minor-league career, has made 12 relief appearances for the Rays, and he's 1-0 with a deceiving 3.86 earned run average.

8/22/25 Tampa Bay Rays Make Pitching Staff Adjustment Amid Losing Streak. The Tampa Bay Rays have recalled right-hander Brian Van Belle from Triple-A Durham while optioning right-hander Joe Boyle back to Durham, the team announced on Friday. Van Belle will wear No. 67. 8/21/25 Rays Drop Series Opener To Cardinals. The St. Louis Cardinals (64-65) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays (61-67) 7-4 on Thursday night at Steinbrenner Field in the first game of a three-game interleague series. For the Rays, it was their fourth straight loss. Though the Rays got on the board in the first inning, St. Louis answered with a five-run second to take control of this game. The Rays pulled within 5-3 but that would be as close as they would get en route to the 7-4 loss. Joe Boyle (1-3 5.40) took the loss allowing six runs - five of them earned - on nine hits in four innings of work. The Rays will now look to bounce back and even the three-game series with the second game of the series coming up on Friday night. First pitch Friday

8/16/25 Yandy Diaz's 9th-Inning Single Helps Rays Take Series Opener From Giants, 7-6. Joe Boyle just didn't have it Friday night. The Tampa Bay starter only got six outs before manager Kevin Cash had to go to the bullpen, and early hooks have usually spelled disaster for the Rays all season. Starting their fourth straight series on the road, the Rays really needed that one, and they got it.

8/03/25 My Two Cents: New Guys in Rotation Need to Help Rays Get Hot. Now the Tampa Bay Rays need to make another move — back up in the standings. Rookie Joe Boyle, who replaced Taj Bradley in the rotation last week after five impressive outings, gets the nod on Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It seems so weird seeing new faces in the Rays' rotation after Drew Rasmusse, Ryan Pepiot, Shane, Bradley and Zack Littell all made 20 straight starts to begin the season.

7/22/25 With Each Appearance, Curiosity and Questions Surround Rays Righty Joe Boyle. Each appearance by Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Joe Boyle is accompanied by a forward-facing mentality and the question of how he will respond the next time he is called upon. After a solid two-inning outing by Boyle aided the Rays in an 11-1 blowout win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, the question remains. “I'll be curious to see how he feels, how he bounces back,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said on Saturday. After coming to Tampa Bay in the trade that sent Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez to the Athletics last December, Boyle made his first appearance in a Rays uniform in a spot starting role, earning a win after producing seven strikeouts through a five-inning effort in an 8-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on April 13.

4/13/25 Rays call up Joe Boyle from Triple A for surprise start vs. Braves. TAMPA — The Rays have called up hard-throwing right-hander Joe Boyle to start today’s game against the Braves. 12/17/24 Rays’ plans for newcomer Joe Boyle have a familiar feel. ST. PETERSBURG — Rays staff have known of Joe Boyle for a while. They scouted him during high school in Kentucky, college at Notre Dame and in the minors after the Reds made him a fifth-round pick in 2020, then traded him to the Athletics at the July 2023 deadline. But it was the six shutout innings Boyle threw against the Rays on Aug. 19 that really got them talking. “He was overpowering in ...

12/14/24 [NBC Sports Bay Area] - Report: Athletics trade Boyle, others for Springs in deal with Rays. The Athletics are staying busy this offseason. The team is finalizing a trade to acquire from the Tampa Bay Rays, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Saturday morning, citing sources. Tampa Bay will receive right-handers Joe Boyle and Jacob Watters, outfielder Will Simpson, and a compensation draft pick from the A’s for Springs and one other player who has yet to be named, Passan added. The A's are finalizing a trade to acquire left-hander Jeffrey Springs from the Tampa Bay Rays, sources tell ESPN. Multiple players are going in both directions, but with the A's looking to spend, they get a rotation piece in Springs under club control for three more seasons.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) Springs joined the Rays after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in 2021. It didn’t take long for Springs to establish himself as a solid reliever with high strikeout numbers. Tampa Bay eventually moved him into their starting rotation, where he enjoyed a career year in 2022 as he accrued 3.1 fWAR and was rewarded with a four-year, $31 million contract extension. Springs often has looked like a potential Cy Young Award candidate — when healthy. Coming off a breakout campaign in 2022 (2.46 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 144 strikeouts in 135 innings), Springs made just three starts before suffering a season-ending elbow injury in 2023. He threw just 16 innings before an injury resulted in Tommy John surgery in 2023, sidelining him for the rest of the season. The Rays shut him down in September of the 2024 season, placing him on the IL due to elbow fatigue. Springs will make $10.5 million in 2026 and has a team option for $15 million in 2027.
