4/15/24 Don't Look Now, But The Detroit Tigers Just Might Be Contenders. MLB's two Central Divisions are actually among my favorites to watch on an annual basis. The Cubs and Cardinals over in the NL Central are the closest thing there is to “haves” in the flyover divisions. Now it wasn't all that along ago that the Tigers were the class of the AL Central, though the clubs led by Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, David Price, Magglio Ordonez, Max Scherzer, Victor Martinez and others never did quite win World Series rings.

4/05/24 Tigers banking on Javier Baez's defensive value as plate struggles continue. After the retirement of Miguel Cabrera, the most visible player on the Detroit Tigers roster, the one whose name is most recognized outside of Michigan, the one who once had “star” attached to his name is also the player who is struggling the most. Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez is coming off a bad season and a bad spring. Over much of the last two years, Baez was capable of making jaw-dropping web gems in one moment and then tossing away an easy grounder in the next. This spring, manager A.J. Hinch said Baez has been locked in defensively, emphasizing the routine plays as much as the spectacular ones.

4/02/24 Tigers-Mets game postponed due to weather, rescheduled for Thursday. The Tigers, which are first in the American League Central, hold a 4-0 record after beating the Mets 5-0 on Monday. This is the Tigers's first season without Miguel Cabrera, who retired last year after 16 seasons with the Tigers and took a new role within the organization. Detroit is also gearing up for its home opener at Comerica Park on Friday against the Oakland Athletics.

3/27/24 The ripening: After a year of maturity, growth and buy-in, are Tigers ready to compete. The 2024 Detroit Tigers are built to be a collective, a group of mostly versatile, interchangeable parts. The last vestige of the past era, Miguel Cabrera, has retired. “These guys have played together,” manager AJ Hinch said early in camp.

1/18/24 Tigers' 2024 payroll projection: Spending down for 2nd straight year. Despite adding five veterans via trade and free agency, the Detroit Tigers are likely to enter the 2024 season with a lower payroll than the previous year. The biggest factor, of course, is the retirement of franchise legend Miguel Cabrera and his massive annual salary. Additionally, veteran left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez opted out his contract after the 2023 season and the Tigers made little or no effort to re-sign him. It's the second consecutive season in which the Tigers' payroll has decreased after reaching a rebuilding-era highwater mark in 2022.

1/01/24 Eyes forward: Where Tigers' offseason stands as spring training fast approaches. The last refrain of Auld Lang Syne has been sung; 2023 is in the books. For the Tigers, with spring training about six weeks away, that means pushing ahead post-Miggy. For the first time since 2008, the clubhouse will be without the powerful presence of Miguel Cabrera, who is settling into retirement and a role as special assistant to president Scott Harris. New “faces of the franchise” will emerge, much younger faces like Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, Kerry Carpenter, Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize.

12/15/23 Detroit Tigers legend Miguel Cabrera to play one final season in native Venezuela. Detroit Tigers legend Miguel Cabrera, who retired from MLB at the end of the 2023 season, isn't quite done playing baseball. Cabrera, 40, this week said he plans to play for another “Tigers” team – the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League during the 2024-25 season. The Maracay, Venezuela native, will not play during the ongoing 2023-24 season, saying he instead plans to use the time off to rest and prepare for one final season of baseball beginning in October 2024.

11/04/23 Tigers decline 2024 option for Miguel Cabrera, paving way for his retirement. The retirement sendoff concluded last month. Now it's time for the paperwork. The Detroit Tigers formally declined Miguel Cabrera's $30 million option for 2024 this week. The team will now owe him an $8 million buyout. The move means that the 40-year-old Cabrera is now officially a free agent for the first time in his career. But that shouldn't last long. Once Cabrera submits his papers to the league office, he'll be officially retired. The Associated Press reported that half of Cabrera's buyout will be deferred without interest. Spotrac estimates Cabrera's career earnings at about $393 million , nearly all of which was paid by the Tigers. Cabrera will become a special assistant to team president

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers declined their $30 million option of retiring star Miguel Cabrera on Friday and will pay a $8 million buyout that completes a $292 million, 10-year contract. Half of the buyout is deferred without interest. A 12-time All-Star and four-time batting champion, Cabrera is a two-time AL MVP. In 2012, he became the first AL Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.
