7/11/23 For starters, White Sox have had better of Cubs in the All-Star Game. Ferguson Jenkins never started an All-Star Game. Neither did Rick Sutcliffe, Jake Arrieta or other Cubs aces of recent vintage. The only All-Star starting pitcher in Cubs lore is Claude Passeau in 1946. Justin Steele, who enters the break 9-2 with a 2.56 ERA, had been floated as a possibility to break the dry spell, but the Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen drew the assignment, which was announced Monday.

6/23/23 London Series: NLB legends inspire 900 youngsters in the capital. Nine hundred children from twenty-five different schools enjoyed a masterclass from MLB legends Jake Arrieta and David Eckstein as well as Chicago Cubs mascot Clarke the Cub on Hopkins Field. Baseball is a hidden secret in the UK, followed by enthusiastic night owls and weekend warriors, and played by a small but resolute community and that is something BaseballSoftballUK are looking to change. Hosting six MLB regular season games in the UK, across a four-year period provides a unique opportunity to share the magic of baseball, to catapult the sport's popularity and exponentially increase the number of baseball and softball players throughout the country.

5/06/23 Justin Steele ties a Cubs record set during Jake Arrieta's dominant run. Peak Jake Arrieta, which we saw in the second half of the 2015 season and early on in 2016, was the stuff of legend. It may be decades before we see another run as dominant as the bearded right-hander was during that stretch. During this 14-start span, Steele has amassed 80 innings pitched (averaging just under six innings per outing), working to a 1.24 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. This year, in six starts, the young southpaw leads the league with a 1.49 ERA and 303 ERA+ and has emerged as an early NL Cy Young candidate in the National League.

11/18/22 On This Day in Cubs History: Jake Arrieta Wins Cy Young Award. Just two years later, he would win the National League Cy Young with one of the best seasons in Cubs history. Then two years after that, he reverted back to the pitcher he once was, rounding out the final four seasons of his career with a 4.62 ERA. But even in 2015, Arrieta's brilliance wasn't long-lasting.

10/26/22 On This Day in History: Cubs Win First World Series Game in 71 Years. On Oct. 26, 2016, the Chicago Cubs jumped out to a lead and never looked back. With reigning Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta on the mound, it was never not comfortable for Chicago. Down 1-0 in the World Series at that point, the Cubs desperately needed a win to keep their hopes afloat.

Over the last decade, the Cubs have had a mixed bag when it comes to success in the NLCS, with the obvious crown jewel coming in 2016 when they won the World Series. In 2015, Chicago experienced a loss in Game 2 of the NLCS against the New York Mets. Cubs starter Jake Arrieta pitched five innings of four-run ball while striking out eight.

4/20/22 For the Cubs, Jake Arrieta was the move that put them over the top. Despite an ill-fated reunion tour in 2021, the mark Jake Arrieta left on the Chicago Cubs organization is one that won’t soon be forgotten. The bearded right-hander played an integral role during the team’s peak – emerging as not just one of the best arms on the team, but in all baseball, evidenced by his run to the 2015 National League Cy Young Award. But the trade that brought him to Chicago was never billed as anything special.

3/10/22 Today in Esoteric Cubs History (3/11): Jake Arrieta signs with the Phillies. On Aug. 30, 2015, Jake Arrieta made history, throwing the first no-hitter by a visiting pitcher at Dodger Stadium in more than two decades. Eight months later, he threw a second no-no, this time against the Reds in Cincinnati. In his initial five-year stint with the Chicago Cubs, Arrieta was an All-Star, a Silver Slugger recipient, NL Cy Young Winner, Major League wins leader and, oh yeah, he won a little thing called a World Series ring.

11/22/21 Chicago Cubs: Another reclamation project target in Mike Foltynewicz. Foltynewicz hasn’t been the same guy in three or so years, and while Rodon comes with health questions, he’s undoubtedly got the higher ceiling at this point. Late last offseason, I opined a move for Foltynewicz had far more promise than someone like an aging Jake Arrieta (which is, of course, who the Cubs wound up signing) – for multiple reasons. Even now, he’s just 30 years old, so it stands to reason he’s not on his last leg in the way Arrieta sure seemed to be this summer.
