4/24/24 The Padres player who was 'crushing cigarettes' during games. Former first baseman Eric Hosmer, who spent time with the San Diego Padres during his impressive MLB career, announced his retirement before the 2024 season. During a recent episode of the Diggin' Deep Podcast, Hosmer told a story about a Padres player who used to smoke cigarettes in the clubhouse. “I tell the story with (Ha-Seong) Kim, you know, a lot of the Korean and the Japanese players to calm the nerves they smoke cigarettes,” Hosmer said.

Because of the contract that he signed with the San Diego Padres before they

6/06/23 Red Sox cut 13 players from 40-man roster; how are Matt Barnes, Franchy Cordero, others doing?. Throughout the offseason, much was made about the series of tough roster decisions the Red Sox had to make as they remade their 40-man group for 2023. As free agents were added and trades were made, surprising calls were made as chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom cut ties with veterans like Eric Hosmer and Matt Barnes and once-promising prospects like Jeter Downs, Darwinzon Hernandez and Connor Seabold. Two months into the season, are any of the Red Sox' tough winter cuts coming back to bite them? Barnes has emerged as a middle/late inning option for Miami and has been pitching somewhere between the sixth and eighth innings.

5/25/23 KC Royals have no interest in bringing back Eric Hosmer, who was DFA’d by Cubs. The first baseman, who was part of the Royals’ 2015 World Series team, is available to any team after the Cubs let him go.

5/20/23 Cubs make massive decision on former World Series hero. On Friday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs made a major decision on an All-Star first baseman and former World Series hero. The Cubs announced that they had designated 33-year-old Eric Hosmer for an assignment. One of the better defensive first basemen of the last decade, Hosmer signed an eight-year contract with San Diego Padres heading into the 2018 season.

5/19/23 The Chicago Cubs listen to fans and say goodbye to Eric Hosmer. The Eric Hosmer experiment has officially ended for the Chicago Cubs as the veteran first baseman was designated for assignment on Friday. Hosmer was pegged by the Cubs to be an upgrade from the production that the team received from the first base position in 2022. Instead, Hosmer was just as bad as the returns that the Cubs got from Frank Schwindel and Alfonso Rivas. Through 100 plate appearances this season, Hosmer slashed .234/.280/.330 with a wRC+ of 67.

5/05/23 Prospblocking Cubs Have a Mervis Breakdown.
As you might've heard, Matt Mervis was called up, but, more incredibly, Eric Hosmer grounded into a double play while he was sitting on a bench. Those boos aren't from fans for Eric Hosmer; they are boos from Eric Hosmer because he's a ghost of his former self. This is funny in a "how stupid am I" way: So, I saw Christian Encarnacion-Strand posted himself on Instagram in a Reds uniform, then deleted it, so that means he's coming, right? Of course! So, I dropped Matt Mervis for CES. Hey, if you can't laugh at me, at least cry with me. Welp, I just gave you my Matt Mervis fantasy last week. Not much to add. I mean, there's a lot to add, like Matt Mervis for one! Hopefully this waiver claim goes through dropping CES. I'm so stupid! Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

5/03/23 Chicago Cubs have no reason to keep Edwin Rios in the Majors. It's clear he's ready for the big leagues and the team isn't running their best 26 guys unless they have him in tow. Considering he's a first baseman, it makes sense then that fans would turn their ire to veteran Eric Hosmer as the guy to cut bait with in order to bring Mervis up. Whatever you feel about that decision, there's actually an easier solution that would allow Mervis to come up and Hosmer to stay - just send Edwin Rios to Iowa.

5/01/23 2023 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 27. With three straight one run losses to finish the month, the Cubs are 2-5 in one run games. The Cubs are 7-11 against the National League. It's hard to imagine that both wouldn't produce more than Eric Hosmer at this point in his career. It's arguable that they'd outproduce Trey Mancini.

4/29/23 Marlins 7, Cubs 6: The dumbest game of the year, so far. Give the Cubs credit, they came back from a 5-0 first-inning deficit and made things close, but fell short and lost for the second straight day by one run. Eric Hosmer decided to tag up and run to third on a short fly to left because... why? David Ross wasted THREE players on a pinch-hitting appearance in the sixth inning. Whew, that was some bad display of baseball by the Chicago Cubs for most of Saturday afternoon in Miami, though they did some nice work in making the game close.

4/28/23 Fast Red Sox prospect acquired in trade trained on empty stomach in offseason. Corey Rosier, one of the two prospects who the Red Sox acquired from San Diego in the Eric Hosmer trade at last year's deadline, began meditating, read more and changed his diet during a productive offseason. “I actually experimented with intermittent fasting this offseason,” Rosier said by phone Tuesday. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter is 15-for-42 (.357 batting average) with a .400 on-base percentage, .452 slugging percentage, .852 OPS and four doubles in 14 games for Double-A Portland. The Red Sox added speed in the Hosmer trade, which sent pitching prospect Jay Groome to the Padres.

4/27/23 Hosmer, Velázquez, Swanson hit HRs, Cubs beat Padres 5-2. Eric Hosmer and Nelson Velázquez hit back-to-back homers and Dansby Swanson added his first of the season to help the Cubs top the San Diego Padres 5-2 on Thursday. Manny Machado homered for the Padres, who had won five of seven. Hayden Wesneski (2-1) worked the first five innings for Chicago, which took the three-game series after going 1-3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers last weekend.

4/26/23 Bobby Witt Jr. has looked like the second coming of Eric Hosmer, which is not ideal. The Eric Hosmer Discourse has faded in the years since he signed with the San Diego Padres and especially since the Padres jettisoned him, dooming Hosmer to be a nomad. With this hindsight, most of the previously controversial parts of the Hosmer Discourse have become less so, the big one being that Hosmer just wasn't that good. Yes, Hosmer had big moments. Memorable moments. Wonderful moments. But those were mostly just that—moments. Hosmer was a limited and streaky hitter whose tools were flashy but whose production was mediocre. Per Fangraphs' version of Wins Above Replacement, Hosmer ranked 107th out of 129 players with at least 3000 plate appearances in his time as a Royal. He only ranked

4/25/23 Padres head to Wrigley Field for a three-game series with the Cubs. Remember what happened the last time the San Diego Padres were at Wrigley Field? They scored 41 runs in a four-game sweep. The Friars are unlikely to score that many again, especially considering it's only a three-game series, but the offense is entering Chicago in a much better spot than where it was a week ago. Last Tuesday, the Padres scored just one run in a loss against the Atlanta Braves and that came after the offense didn't score a single run in two straight games. Entering tonight, the Padres offense has scored 12 runs in their last two games and have won four of their last five. Now they're taking on the Chicago Cubs, who have old friend Eric Hosmer probably ready to hit three homers
