4/19/24 White Sox' veteran Martin Maldonado 'trusting' in what he does while battling awful start. Martin Maldonado owned a .205/.281/.346 career hitting line through Thursday, so offense has not not the catcher's calling card during his 14-year career. Crochet gave up three homers, two to Alec Bohm worth six runs, and one to Whit Merrifield in three-plus innings. “One thing I learned in my career, whether you are going good or not, you have to keep doing what you do, trust in what you do and always keep working,” Maldonado said before the game. Maldonado said he knows what his numbers say, but said he's seeing the ball well.

3/18/24 Korey Lee's big spring for White Sox carries into final week. Veterans Martin Maldonado and Max Stassi are 1-2 on the catching depth chart and manager Pedro Grifol has already talked about how they'll divide innings – Maldonado will get more than half – but Korey Lee is saying “what about me?” with his catching and bat this spring. “Never know,” Lee said. Lee has three homers, including two to the opposite field, and a .350/.417/.900 hitting line. Lee was acquired from the Astros for Kendall Graveman at the trade deadline.

3/03/24 Former Astros Catcher Shows Off Leadership Skills. Former Astros Catcher Shows Off Legendary Leadership Skills Nothing has changed when it comes to former Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado and his ability to lead. Author: Matthew Postins Publish date: Mar 3, 2024 1:54 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros No one around the Houston Astros would ever question the leadership of former catcher Martín Maldonado. Even as his skills at the plate declined, his prowess behind the plate in defense, game calling and pitch framing kept him in former manager Dusty Baker's lineup most days, even as fans questioned why he wasn't playing Yainer Diaz more often. Well, Diaz is the starter for the Astros this season, with Victor Caratini set to serve as the

2/25/24 White Sox' Martin Maldonado owns up to not running hard on Cactus League ground ball. With so much emphasis on playing the game “the right way,” and doing the little things, not to mention play FAST, which in White Sox manager Pedro Grifol's world means “fearless, aggressive, selfless, technical,” seeing 37-year-old catcher Martin Maldonado not run hard on a dribbler near the mound made Grifol squirm just a bit. Maldonado was brought to the Sox at age 37 to not only handle the pitching staff but to lead a group none-too-deep with talent as Grifol and general manager Chris Getz re-establish a foundation with which to build. Granted, it was the first game of a somewhat meaningless Cactus League game Friday.

Author: Brad Wakai Publish date: Feb 18, 2024 4:00 PM EST In this story: Houston Astros Perhaps one of the least talked about storylines throughout the offseason and entering Spring Training is who will be catching pitches from the Houston Astros ' top-end staff. For a long time, veteran Martin Maldonado was slotted in as their everyday catcher. His elite defense and overall presence behind the plate made up for his lackluster offensive performances. But, the Astros got a taste of what it might

1/30/24 Josh Hader reveals why he signed with Astros. Whenever there is a hint of doubt surrounding the Houston Astros, the franchise tends to respond in a big way. With multiple relievers entering MLB free agency and respected catcher Martin Maldonado joining the Chicago White Sox, the club faces some uncertainty. Any concern, however, was greatly alleviated with the huge signing of Josh Hader. The top relief pitcher agreed to a five-year, $95 million contract with the Astros on Jan. 19, which makes him one of the highest-paid bullpen pieces of all-time.

8/23/23 Back on track, Astros chase another win over Red Sox. Veteran Houston catcher Martin Maldonado had no issue acknowledging that the Astros' play over the weekend against Seattle was unacceptable and that an impromptu team meeting was held after the Mariners' three-game sweep. What the Astros sought against the Mariners they manifested in a 7-3 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, a win that earned at minimum a split of the four-game series after a 9-4 win on Monday. On Tuesday, Houston received a strong pitching performance from veteran right-hander Justin Verlander, production from up and down the lineup and a relatively clean defensive effort save for a sixth-inning error that didn't prove costly. One play, in particular, encapsulated the Astros' focus.
