3/31/24 Blackmon, Jones star in 5-run fifth, lead Rockies over D-backs 9-4 for first win of season.

PHOENIX (AP) — Charlie Blackmon had two hits and two RBIs, Nolan Jones hit a two-run triple and the Colorado Rockies used a five-run fifth inning to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 on Saturday night.

The Rockies earned their first win of the season after getting outscored 23-4 over the first two games.

“The goal today was just to find a way to win the game,” Rockies lefty Austin Gomber said. “That's what we needed to do after the way the first two days had gone. Find a way to win, come back tomorrow, try to split a series and get out of here feeling a lot better than we did.”

Colorado trailed 3-2 heading into the fifth before their big rally. The first five Rockies reached base and all of them scored.

Blackmon brought home two runs on a double down the right-field line. Jones added two more with his triple — also into the right-field corner — and then Ryan McMahon's sacrifice fly scored Jones for the fifth run of the inning.

Ezequiel Tovar had a two-run homer in the second. Brenton Doyle added another two-run shot in the eighth.

Gomber threw 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs, six hits and three walks. Peter Lambert (1-0) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Nick Mears pitched out of a jam in the seventh, retiring three straight batters after inheriting runners on first and second.

“That was the key to the game for me,” Rockies manager Bud Black said.

The D-backs cut the Rockies' lead to 7-4 in the fifth on Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s solo homer. The Cuban left fielder set a franchise record with a homer in each of the first three games of the season.

Eugenio Suárez also had a solo homer, his first as a member of the D-backs following an offseason trade from Seattle. Corbin Carroll reached base four times.

3/24/24 Renck: Charlie Blackmon, still bearded face of Rockies franchise, wants to win again in Colorado. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Charlie Blackmon isn't even supposed to be here. Not in the Rockies clubhouse for a 14th season. In the big leagues. Blackmon was a middling relief pitcher at Georgia Tech, his career going nowhere lightning fast. He showed up for summer ball with one year of eligibility left and told manager Rusty Greer he was a two-way player. He hadn't hit since high school. He fibbed. He raked. And he hasn't stopped since, his journey leaving him reflective as he enters what could be his final season in Colorado. “Things could have been so different for me. I am very grateful. There's a lot I have to give back because of it. I just don't think it was a pure blind chance that I got the

2/24/24 Rockies Journal: At 37, Charlie Blackmon's still setting tone for Kid Rox. During a recent spring training workout at Salt River Field, several Rockies players milled around the cage, waiting to take their cuts during live batting practice. Charlie Blackmon was in a different place. “I was getting reads off the bat,” Blackmon explained. It's that attitude, attention to detail and work ethic that have made Blackmon one of the most beloved teammates in Rockies history.

10/01/23 Charlie Blackmon, already on “Mount Rushmore of Rockies,” gets chance to pad Colorado legacy in 2024. As he's built himself into a Colorado icon, Charlie Blackmon's posted plenty of signature moments along the way. On Friday, Blackmon signed a one-year, $13 million extension with $2 million in incentives, keeping the 37-year-old in purple pinstripes through 2024. The deal sets up what might be Chuck Nazty's final chapter — or maybe not, considering Blackmon's tendency to defy baseball odds. “Once he broke Juan Pierre's short-season record for hits a few months after being drafted, it was pretty obvious he was going to eclipse any expectations that the Rockies could've had for him,” explained Alan Matthews, the area scout who signed Charlie and now works for the Dodgers.
