4/25/24 Injured Chicago Cubs Reliever Says Money Playing Role In Arm Injuries. Injured Chicago Cubs Reliever Says Money Playing Role In Arm Injuries Drew Smyly was one of several players that recently talked about the rash of arm injuries in baseball and what could be done about it. Author: Matthew Postins Apr 25, 2024 In this story: Chicago Cubs MLB Drew Smyly Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Drew Smyly is on the injured list with a right hip impingement. But, earlier in his career the 34-year-old left-hander had his own bout with arm issues. In early 2017 the Tampa Bay Rays traded him to the Seattle Mariners. He started the season on the injured list and was eventually diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. That led to Tommy John surgery. Smyly

3/16/24 Drew Smyly's role on the Chicago Cubs Opening Day roster revealed. The pitching staff is starting to come into focus for Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Counsell is still getting to know each pitcher but stressed that he would focus on building the staff around pitchers who can get outs. The Cubs' pitching staff has already been hit with the injury bug as Caleb Kilian is expected to miss most of the first half of the 2024 season while Jameson Taillon likely will be sidelined most of the first month due to a lingering back issue. Taillon's injury likely will result in Counsell needing to tweak the starting rotation that the Cubs have at the start of the season.

9/27/23 'I honestly thought it went into my glove': Chicago Cubs suffer devastating 7-6 loss on Seiya Suzuki's error. The Cubs were an out away in the eighth inning from escaping with a one-run lead intact when left-hander Drew Smyly got Atlanta Braves catcher Sean Murphy to hit a ball to right field with runners on second and third base. What should have been an easy inning-ending flyout to Suzuki became a disaster. Suzuki whiffed on the would-be inning-ending catch, allowing two runs to score on his error.

8/26/23 Source: Cubs calling up top lefty prospect Jordan Wicks. The Chicago Cubs are calling up one of their top pitching prospects in left-hander Jordan Wicks who could make his MLB debut as soon as Sunday, according to a source familiar with the situation. The Cubs rank 25th in starter's ERA since the All-Star break as they battle for a playoff spot in the National League. Lefty Drew Smyly has been sent back to the bullpen after some prolonged struggles as a starter, opening up a spot for Wicks. The team has a TBA listed for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

8/25/23 Drew Smyly returns to the Chicago Cubs bullpen, looking to recapture success and help lead a run to the postseason. Drew Smyly is maintaining his humor through the disappointment of being moved back to the Chicago Cubs bullpen. The 24-year-old left-hander made three relief appearances before Marcus Stroman's injury prompted the Cubs to return Smyly to the rotation. “It's like I never left, I guess,” Smyly said Friday at PNC Park. Manager David Ross declined to announce pregame Friday who will take Smyly's start, which is listed as TBD for Sunday's series finale.

8/24/23 Drew Smyly heading back to Cubs' bullpen, Hoyer says. Just one day after manager David Ross cast doubt on such a move, Chicago Cubs pitcher Drew Smyly will indeed head back to the bullpen, President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer said Thursday.

8/23/23 Tigers 8, Cubs 6: Drew Smyly can't start any more games this year. After Drew Smyly threw well in three relief appearances, the Cubs needed to find out whether he could return to the rotation and be as effective as he was earlier this year. Smyly got pounded for eight hits, three walks and seven runs, including a pair of homers and didn't make it out of the fourth inning. The Cubs did try to fight back, but eventually dropped the game, 8-6 to the Tigers. The second Detroit hitter of the game, Andy Ibañez, homered off Smyly, and they scored one more in that inning and another in the second to take a 3-0 lead.

8/22/23 Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers Betting Preview. The Chicago Cubs are on a roll and have their sights set on the postseason. Today's matchup against the Detroit Tigers offers a chance to continue their hot streak, with Drew Smyly taking the mound for the Cubs against the Tigers' Reese Olson. The Cubs are slight favorites in this contest, with betting odds of -116 and a game total of 8.5 runs. While Olson had a tough start last time out, allowing eight hits and four runs in just two and two-thirds innings, his prior performances were more promising.

8/21/23 Drew Smyly headed back to rotation for Cubs' meeting with Tigers. Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly has looked good this month in a relief role, but he will try to get back on track as a starter on Tuesday when Chicago faces the host Detroit Tigers in the middle contest of a three-game series. Smyly has tossed an inning of scoreless relief in each of his last three appearances. "I think the data always pointed to his stuff was still good," Cubs manager David Ross said. Entering late June, Smyly had a 7-4 record with a 3.38 ERA.

8/20/23 Drew Smyly will replace Marcus Stroman in Cubs' rotation. At least for now, Drew Smyly will return to the Cubs' rotation to take the spot vacated by Marcus Stroman. The 34-year-old lost his spot earlier this month in the wake of an 8.37 ERA in his first five outings after the All-Star break, which included two attempts to pair Smyly with an opener to ease him into games. Manager David Ross has alluded to internal metrics suggesting Smyly's stuff should allow him to return to his earlier season success, and for why he was picked over Hayden Wesneski. Ross said they will play it by ear as far as Smyly's pitch count Tuesday, but that he has been “staying conditioned to give us length.”

8/17/23 Do the Cubs Have a Realistic Path to the NL Central Crown?. Last night, the Chicago Cubs pulled off a crucial victory that could potentially reshape the rest of their MLB season. It's been a roller-coaster for the Cubs recently, with wins against teams like the Blue Jays and Braves but disappointing losses to the Mets and the White Sox. Wrigley Field is notorious for its unpredictable wind patterns. Drew Smyly pitched well, but Morel's home run made the difference.

8/11/23 Jays, Cubs aim to take advantage of scoring chances. With left-hander Drew Smyly moving to the bullpen, right-hander Javier Assad is scheduled to start for the visiting Chicago Cubs on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series. Smyly will avoid a Blue Jays lineup that is heavy with right-handed hitters. TheCubs will review the rotation next week when right-hander Marcus Stroman (hip) is eligible to leave the injured list.

8/10/23 Chicago Cubs move Drew Smyly to the bullpen 'for probably a short amount of time,' hoping for short bursts of aggression. Drew Smyly's time in the rotation is over, at least for the foreseeable future. Smyly's inconsistencies combined with three off days in the next week led the Cubs to rework the rotation and move the veteran lefty to the bullpen “for probably a short amount of time,” manager David Ross said before Wednesday's series finale against the Mets. Adding Smyly to the bullpen and an off day Thursday to end a stretch of playing 16 consecutive days provides needed relief. The Cubs (59-56) fell short of securing a series win at Citi Field with a 4-3 loss Wednesday.

8/09/23 Cubs move LHP Drew Smyly to the bullpen and will start rookie RHP Javier Assad on Friday in Toronto. With every game critical in a close playoff race, the Chicago Cubs are moving struggling left-hander Drew Smyly to the bullpen. Rookie right-hander Javier Assad will take Smyly's spot in the rotation this weekend at Toronto, which features several right-handed sluggers in a lineup battering lefties lately. Smyly is 8-8 with a 5.05 ERA in 23 games this season, including 21 starts.

8/08/23 Drew Smyly's struggles continue in Cubs' blowout loss. The Chicago Cubs are still in a heated battle for a playoff spot this season, but they may have to address an issue with their starting rotation as Drew Smyly has continued to struggle.

8/07/23 Cubs' Drew Smyly gives up seven runs to the Mets to open series. Cubs lefty Drew Smyly walked in a run to end a start Monday that served as a microcosm of his recent poor results. Surrendering seven runs to the Mets in five-plus innings, Smyly did give up hard contact. Pete Alonso's pair of home runs were the most obvious examples. Since the All-Star break, Smyly has been focussing on shifting to an attacking mindset with his fastball.
