Associated Press Nov 1, 2024, 06:15 PM ET Email Print Open Extended Reactions PHOENIX -- Outfielder Randal Grichuk turned down his $6 million mutual option with the Arizona Diamondbacks , triggering a $1.75 million buyout and becoming a free agent on Friday. The 33-year-old hit .291 with 12 homers and 46 RBI after missing the first week of the season while finishing his recovery from right ankle surgery. He played left and right field this year and played in center in previous seasons. Grichuk agreed in February to a deal with the Diamondbacks that included a $1.5 million salary and the option. 10/31/24 | Report: Randal Grichuk declines option with Diamondbacks. Outfielder Randal Grichuk declined his $6 million mutual option with the Arizona Diamondbacks, entering free agency on the first day of the offseason, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported on Thursday. Grichuk signed a one-year contract worth $2 million with Arizona during spring training 2024 with the option tacked on. The club wanted a right-handed bat to platoon with left-handed slugger Joc Pederson, who also has a mutual option this offseason for $14 million. Grichuk played 106 games and produced an .875 OPS (.291/.348/.528) and 12 home runs in a part-time role, especially catching fire down the stretch. 10/09/24 | Diamondbacks expected to retain both DH platoon pieces for 2025. The Arizona Diamondbacks were unable to defend their National League pennant from last October. This year, they went with a platoon at the designated hitter position, using Randal Grichuk against left-handed pitchers and Joc Pederson against righties. 9/15/24 | Diamondbacks scratch Randal Grichuk Sunday vs. Brewers. The Arizona Diamondbacks scratched left fielder Randal Grichuk from the lineup Sunday ahead of their series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers. Grichuk was initially set to hit third against Brewers southpaw DL Hall, but the club swapped him for Pavin Smith in left field and reorganized the batting order. Christian Walker hopped up to third, Eugenio Suarez fourth and Smith eighth against the lefty. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo is not with the club on Sunday, as he is in California to present a eulogy for his late friend and teammate Billy Bean.
