3/06/24 Former Rangers Infielder Signs With Padres. A former Texas Rangers infielder has found a home on the west coast, as Brad Miller signed a minor league deal with an invitation to Major League spring training with the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, per MLB.com. Miller became a free agent after the Rangers won their first World Series title, and he had to watch from the dugout after a hamstring injury forced him onto the 60-day injured list in September. The Rangers signed Miller to a two-year contract before the 2022 season, and he slid into a utility role but never got steady playing time.

6/22/22 Rangers beat Phillies for 9th time in row with 4-2 victory.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brad Miller hit a two-run single against his former team and the Texas Rangers beat the Philadelphia Phillies for the ninth time in a row, 4-2 on Wednesday to hand Zack Wheeler his first loss in two months.

Kole Calhoun also drove in two runs for Texas, including a tiebreaking RBI single in the third. Adolis Garcia and Calhoun opened the fifth with back-to-back doubles, though Calhoun was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple.

Kyle Schwarber extended his career-best on-base streak to 26 games for the Phillies with a two-run homer that tied the game at 2 in the third inning.

Philadelphia has lost three games in a row after winning 14 of its first 16 games for interim manager Rob Thomson.

The Rangers' winning streak against the Phillies dates to the opening day of the 2014 season.

Jon Gray (3-3), the opening day starter for Texas, has won consecutive starts for the first time this season. The right-hander struck out six and walked one while allowing two runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Joe Barlow, the third Texas reliever, worked the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances.

Wheeler (6-4) lost for the first time in his last 10 starts, since losing his first three starts this season after finishing second in the NL Cy Young Award voting last year. He struck out eight, but walked three and gave up four runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Rangers led 2-0 on Miller's single with two outs in the second, a few batters after a fielding error by first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Miller had only one hit in his previous 17 at-bats before then. The designated hitter played part of 2019 in Philadelphia, and all of last season there before signing a two-year deal with Texas.

6/14/22 Rangers get 3rd win in row, 5-3 over AL West-leading Houston.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Brad Miller and the Texas Rangers didn't have to hit the ball too hard or very far in a winning rally.

“That was fun, that was just good baseball,” Rangers manager Chris Woodward said about their three-run eighth inning.

Miller grounded an RBI single with an exit velocity of 66 mph the opposite way through a wide-open hole on the left side of the drawn-in infield for the go-ahead run, and Texas beat the AL West-leading Houston Astros 5-3 Monday night for its third consecutive victory. The Rangers also had a couple of stolen bases and two productive groundball outs.

“The way the whole inning played out, that is exactly the way you draw it up,” Woodward said. “We don’t always have to hit a homer, we don’t always have to hit an extra-base hit, or slug. ... Miller hit a backside single where the shift isn't.”

Jonah Heim greeted reliever Héctor Neris (1-3) with a single to open the eighth before pinch-runner Charlie Culberson stole second base and advanced on Nathaniel Lowe's groundout to the right side. Ezequiel Durán drove Culberson home with a tying single grounded through the middle, then the rookie third baseman had his first career stolen base and went to third on a wild pitch before Miller's hit.

“What did I do? I hit a dinker,” Milller said while being doused by teammates as he did a postgame television interview on the field.

“They found the hole and stole some bases on us,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “That's a tough one to lose right there.”

Corey Seager had two hits to snap a 3-for-35 slump before his RBI groundout in the eighth sent home the final run for the Rangers (29-31). They are alone in second place in the division, but 7 1/2 games behind the Astros, who have lost four of five.
