1/16/25 | Polarizing Ex-Red Sox Trade Prize Signs Surprise Deal With Nationals. One former member of the Boston Red Sox is going to get another shot at working his way up to the big leagues this spring. Former Red Sox slugger Franchy Cordero last saw time in the big leagues as a member of the New York Yankees in 2023. Cordero spent part of the 2024 season with the Saitama Seibu Lions and had an up-and-down stint with the team. While this is the case, he reportedly landed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, according to Just Baseball's Aram Leighton. 1/15/25 | Washington Nationals Sign Slugging Outfielder to Minor League Deal. If everything clicks and they are able to contend in the loaded NL East division and even make the playoffs - similar to what the Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers have done during their rebuilding phases - then that would be the best-case scenario for this franchise. While it makes no sense for the Nationals to send some of their youngsters down to the minors if they are struggling since those players need reps and development at the Major League level, having capable backup options is something every front office wants. With that in mind, Washington made an interesting move when they signed slugger Franchy Cordero to a minor league deal that includes a Spring Training invite, per Aram Leighton of Just Baseball.
