San Francisco Giants Star Believes He's Out Of Slump Following First Homer Sometimes all a player needs to get out of a slump is one big hit, and that's what a San Francisco Giants star thinks happened to him. Author: Brad Wakai Apr 23, 2024 In this story: San Francisco Giants MLB Mike Yastrzemski The San Francisco Giants ' offense hasn't quite looked like the front officed envisioned when they added slugger Jorge Soler and Korean star Jung Hoo Lee to their lineup. Entering Monday, they sit 18th in total runs scored (95) and 19th in homers (21). A major reason for that is because their star player Mike Yastrzemski started out the season in a huge slump. 4/07/24 | How Jung Hoo Lee is learning to patrol Oracle Park's outfield. Add roaming the majors' most difficult outfield to the list of cultural, lingual and baseball adjustments Jung Hoo Lee is facing in his transition from Korea to the major leagues. In his second game at Oracle Park, the 25-year-old center fielder got an introduction to the unique natural elements that led Mike Yastrzemski, who knows this grass better than anyone, to distinguish the Giants' waterfront ballpark to be “the hardest outfield to play.” With first pitch at 6:06 p.m. Saturday, the sun was still glaring behind home plate when Padres leadoff man Xander Bogaerts lifted a pop fly to shallow center field. It should have been a routine play, but Lee lost the ball in the sun from the moment it left Bogaerts' bat, falling to the grass for a base hit. 4/05/24 | Giants take their home opener, beating the Padres 3-2. Bob Melvin allowed himself to become nostalgic ever so briefly during his first home game managing the San Francisco Giants. The Giants earned him a victory on a day it meant so much to their new manager, who appreciated being recognized but is ready for the focus to be on his team. “I think it's a special moment for him but I think that narrative is kind of getting a little old for him,” outfielder Mike Yastrzemski said. Thairo Estrada doubled home Matt Chapman for the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, and San Francisco beat Melvin's former San Diego Padres 3-2 on Friday. 2/28/24 | SF Giants-A's: Yastrzemski on track for Opening Day; Melvin calls out club still seeking first win. Both sides of the San Francisco Giants' planned right field platoon have been hampered by health issues to begin spring training, but both players appear to be turning a corner and on track for the regular season, with Mike Yastrzemski making his Cactus League debut Wednesday. Yastrzemski, 33, pointed to the outcome of the two times he put the ball in play as evidence why he's isn't concerned by his delayed start. In a 7-4 exhibition loss to the A's, he came to the plate three times as the designated hitter, drawing a walk and twice flying out to left field. “I got beat a little bit, but the fact that I'm executing what I'm trying to do on day one is really promising for me,” Yastrzemski said. 1/21/24 | Player Review: Mike Yastrzemski. Mike Yastrzemski is the San Francisco Giant of the Farhan Zaidi era. A stolid platoon with veteran steadiness, echoing Buster Posey, Evan Longoria, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford without their peaks, but the added thrill of name recognition while being plucked from obscurity.
