3/07/24 Kurtenbach: 3 Up, 3 Down — What I'm liking (and hating) about SF Giants' and Oakland A's spring training so far. In recent years, the Giants built a lineup around versatility and platooning. It's clear that the Giants are moving away from that direction for this season. Sure, there will be some platooning at the bottom of the lineup, but the San Francisco roster seems as inflexible as ever. Austin Slater might slide in at a corner spot when there's a southpaw on the mound — Heliot Ramos or Luis Matos could do the same, though I expect them both to start the season in Sacramento — but I expect the Giants to roll out a three-man combo of Michael Conforto, Jung Hoo Lee, and Mike Yaztremski day in, day out.

3/04/24 Why LaMonte Wade Jr. is doing more work with MLB players' union. Wade, 30, was elevated to become the team's player representative with the union, the role Austin Slater previously held, acting as a funnel for any labor issues raised by the rest of the roster. When Slater, the Giants' player rep since 2020, took on a more powerful post last year as one of eight members of the pension committee, Wade voiced an interest in replacing him as their next player rep.

12/20/23 Player Review: Austin Slater. The 2023 season was, in many respects, vintage Austin Slater on display: lots of hard and loud contact, a stringy stache in May, beating up southpaws, and ridiculous bat flings. As for his role as a right-handed outfield platoon—his main gig—Slater posted an .800 OPS mark in his fifth consecutive season. The strain sent him back to the IL a couple weeks later, and it wasn't until June that he managed 40 plate appearances in a month. In total, Slater lost 100 PA and nearly half as many defensive innings in the outfield from the 2022 season.

11/13/23 Mon/Tues BP: The Giants are expected to drive Shohei Ohtani's price up. Among other things, Rule 5 protections must be in place on Tuesday, while Friday is the deadline for tendering or non-tendering a contract to arbitration-eligible players (though I wouldn't expect any surprises from the team's six such players, Austin Slater, Mike Yastrzemski, J.D. Davis, Tyler Rogers, Thairo Estrada, and LaMonte Wade Jr.).
