9/02/25 Padres bring back Martin Maldonado on minor league deal weeks after release. The San Diego Padres have re-signed catcher Martin Maldonado to a minor league deal, per Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The deal became official on Aug. 31, meaning Maldonado is eligible to be on the postseason roster as an injury replacement for either Freddy Fermin or Elias Diaz.

7/23/25 Padres' $73 Million Trade Target Unlikely to Be Available at Deadline: Report. With the trade deadline just one week away, the San Diego Padres are hoping to land an upgrade at catcher. The Padres currently have Elias Díaz and Martin Maldonado splitting time at the position, but neither have been able to produce offensively for San Diego. One trade target the Padres have reportedly had their eye on this season is Atlanta Braves All-Star catcher Sean Murphy.

7/22/25 Padres May Not Make Major Change at Catcher After All: Report. The San Diego Padres are dealing with a catcher conundrum after Martin Maldonado and Elias Diaz have struggled to get going offensively. The Padres are not getting production from the catcher spot in the lineup, which has tended to hinder the offense's momentum as a whole. Diaz is batting .198/.270/.307 with five home runs in his 79 appearances for San Diego this season. Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that there were discussions about adding Luis Campusano into the rotation, but the team appears to have opted against it.
